App:  TuneIn Radio by TuneIn.

For: All Smartphones

Price: Free

If you like to listen to a wide variety of radio stations with differing formats, such as rock, classical, talk-radio, sports and so on, then TuneIn Radio is definitely for you.  This extremely popular app (over 40 million users) lets you listen to streaming audio from approximately 100,000 different live radio stations from all over the world.  In addition, you can listen to over 2 million prerecorded podcasts including lectures, concerts and comedies. You can even tune-in to college football games in every conference; literally hundreds of games broadcasting live.  With TuneIn Radio, it is very simple to browse through a huge list of different music genres from all over the world, including, of course, all your favorite local stations.  If you find stations that you particularly like listening to, just add them to your preset list.  Another neat feature is that you can search for an artist or a song, and the app will search the 70,000 radio stations to find where that song is playing right now.  The album art and song information is displayed while the song is playing. TuneIn Radio is simply an amazing app that is quite fun to use.

For the over 21 crowd, having to choose the perfect wine for a particular meal or a special occasion can be a daunting task.  This is especially true if you are a wine novice who aspires to be a wine connoisseur. It is no surprise that there is a great app available that makes it easy to buy wine like an oenophile. Hello Vino is the perfect wine app to sort out all sorts of questions one might have when buying wine.  You start your search from a list which includes a wine pairing for your meal, a wine suggestion for an occasion, a wine according to taste/flavor, a wine from a country or region, wine by type or variety or, popular wine picks. After you choose one of the categories, Hello Vino walks you through a step-by-step process where you answer one question followed by another.  For example, if you select ‘a wine pairing for your meal’, you will be asked to choose the type of food, followed by a series of questions to single out precisely the food you are eating.  At that point, a list of recommended wines will be presented to you, including links for articles and reviews from online writers, wine ratings and reviews from the popular wine review organizations as well as a link to the winery itself.  If you already have a bottle of wine, or are examining one in the store, Hello Vino lets you scan the label to instantly access food- pairing information, critical reviews and other useful information.  This is a great app for anyone who enjoys wine and wants to learn more about choosing the right wine, and a delicious wine, for any occasion. You’ll be considered an authority on vino in no time!

App:        Postagram by Sincerely.com

For:         iPhones and Android phones

Price:       Free

How many postcards did you send this summer? For that matter, how many postcards did you receive in the mail? These days, a lot of smartphone users take pictures with their phone and text them right to the recipient. However, many people still love to send (and receive) postcards through the mail, considering it to be more personal and thoughtful. Luckily, for those who still like postcards, Postagram is a fantastic app. With Postagram, you can easily send a postcard in the mail, directly from your phone. You can use a picture that you shoot directly from the app or take a picture out of your phone’s photo library. Your photos are then turned into personalized postcards that you mail directly from your phone. The cost is 99 cents for mailing in the U.S. mailing or $1.99 for international mailing. This is a very popular app and users are sending personalized postcards for thank-you cards, invitations, birthday cards, travel postcards, birth announcements and more. You can include a message up to 140 characters, and the postcards are printed on thick, glossy photo card stock with high resolution. In addition, the postcard is personalized with the sender’s profile photo. Another handy feature is that the 3×3 inch photo can be popped-out of the postcard to be framed, put in your wallet, or added to scrapbooks. Thanks to Postagram, it is so simple to mail a personalized postcard to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

space.gifThe rapid growth of social media has really been a blessing to anyone who likes to go out and explore different places. This is due to the ease of accessing the reviews and opinions of others. There is no doubt that when you are looking for someplace new to experience, it is really helpful to know what other people have to say about a particular place. And, if you want the app that has the most extensive and useful reviews, TripAdvisor is simply indispensable. Wherever you are, this app helps you access over 100 million user reviews, opinions, and photos to find the best hotels, the best restaurants, and fun and interesting things to do. It also helps you to find flights and compare airfare. Use the ‘Near Me Now’ feature to instantly find out what is close to any address that you enter. This feature will list all nearby hotels, nearby restaurants and nearby things to do, including detailed information, price range, and the type of establishment. The best feature, of course, is the ability to read the numerous reviews and opinions of other travelers to help you make your decision. You will learn the good, the bad, and the ugly and with practice will be able to know which reviews are the most accurate and applicable to you. If you like to travel, whether close to home or in foreign lands, immediately downloading the TripAdvisor app to your smartphone is a wise decision.

App: GateGuru by GateGuru Inc.

For: iPhones and Android phones

Price: Free

With the arrival of summer, many of us will be spending some of our time in airports. Unfortunately, for many vacationers, the airport experience is the worst part of traveling.  However, there is a handy little app called GateGuru that definitely helps in making the time spent in airports a little more bearable.  For starters, once you enter your flight information directly into the app, GateGuru will keep you real-time informed on any delays, as well as security-line wait times. In addition, when you enter your airport location into the app, you are supplied with a wealth of information about the airport and what it has to offer.  For example, you can sort by restaurants (and then types of foods), different shops (for example, book shops and gift shops) and services and ATM machine locations. Detailed maps are easy to navigate. Even more useful than just listing what food shops are available, GateGuru supplies the user with reviews from fellow travelers. This is most appreciated when searching for airport food.  A really neat feature of this app is the ability to rent a car quickly through an exclusive partnership with Avis-Budget.   GateGuru says that this allows them to offer the user discounts up to 35% compared with other leading travel sites.  Since airport delays are an inevitable part of traveling, GateGuru is an app every traveler will find indispensable.
