What are values?
The dictionary states that values are
the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Or a person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.
Host Maria Wong tackles the subject of values with personal perspectives as a teen who deciding on the next step towards college choices. Your values are things that you prioritize and think are important in defining your life and work. Maria interviews Robin Roe with her novel, A List of Cages, who has written a raw, emotional, powerful novel with a strong message of kindness. Robin discusses her writing process, how she writes, her love for her former students, and her upcoming novel. Maria provides a Book Smart segment about her all time favorite book, Kira Kira by Cynthia Kadohata, a book that shaped many of her personal values and helps readers reflect on how experiences, family, culture, and location shape one’s value system.

Spring has sprung and a time to celebrate the re-birth of nature is upon us. Host Asya Gonzalez reads producer, Cynthia Brian’s article aptly titled Flower Fever that sets the tone for this program celebrating spring, empathy, and Easter. BIO: Kelsey Crowe, Ph.D. is the founder of Help Each Other Out. Crowe earned her doctorate in social welfare at the University of California, Berkley and teaches social work at California State University. Crowe’s first book, There Is No Good Card for This: What To Say and Do When Life Gets Scary, Awful, and Unfair To People You Love), coauthored with Emily McDowell.  Written in a how-to, relatable, we’ve-all-been-that-deer-in-the-headlights kind of way, There Is No Good Card for This isn’t a spiritual treatise on how to make you a better person or a scientific argument about why compassion matters. It is a helpful illustrated guide to effective compassion that takes you, step by step by step, past the paralysis of thinking about someone in a difficult time to actually doing something (or nothing) with good judgment instead of fear.
Crowe’s organization Help Each Other Out is a growing collective of people embracing the idea that being there for others is often easier than we think, it can be learned, and that it matters. Taking the principles found in There Is No Good Card for This along with her many years of experience in the field and organization, a presentation with Crowe is not one to miss. From universities to health care organizations, every audience member will walk away feeling inspired.
Currently, Crowe resides in San Francisco, California with her husband and daughter. She hopes for a day when no one has to suffer a personal trial alone because the people around them just didn’t know what to do or say. http://www.helpeachotherout.com

Technology has falsely convinced us that we are developing communication through apps, smartphones, and social media, when in fact to really express an emotion, face to face contact is necessary. Yoga instructor and competitive gymnastics coach, Catie Jarvis, joins the discussion with her first novel, The Peacock Room. The Peacock Room tells the coming of age story of Jonis and Lizzy: a young man with a mysterious medical condition that causes one leg to grow far too long, and the frustrated musical savant who falls in love with him. The novel inspires emotional responses. In our Book smart segment, Maria reviews The God of Small Things, a book that perfectly captures the Gift of Emotion because throughout the novel, the characters display a wide array of emotions ranging from jealousy, sadness, fear, and joy. Catie Jarvis is an author of fiction, as well as a yoga instructor, a competitive gymnastics coach, and an online writing instructor. That’s why the hosts and reporters of Express Yourself!™ are writing a new book, Be the Star You Are!® for Millennials scheduled for release later this year! In the meantime, the team are busy interviewing, reporting, and gathering life skills. This week hosts Asya Gonzalez and Katie Choo interview seventeen year old award winning actress and screenwriter, Mandalynn Carlson about her meteoric career, her screenplays, and what she’s learned working in show business. Katie Lyons joins the conversation to share her love of writing indicating that she’s been crafting stories since before she could write. The young ladies greatly admire writer JK Rowlings who rose from homelessness to being the most famous writer in the world. The message is to believe in your dreams, work hard, never give up, and write on!


Bio for Mandalynn Carlson
Mandalynn Carlson is an award-winning American teen actress, whose first professional film appearance was a supporting role in the 2011 action biopic “Machine Gun Preacher” with Gerard Butler. Leaving Michigan for Hollywood, Carlson has found success staring in dozens of independent films and television shows, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “CSI:NY”. Mandalynn is outspoken against bullying, having dealt with it during elementary and middle school. She started college at 15 years of age and maintains a 4.0 GPA in the film studies curriculum. A fantastic story-teller, Carlson is creating screenplays she hopes to produce and direct that deal with women and girls self-image and self-worth under her production company Smash The Glass Pictures. While she prefers to be in front of the camera, she maintains that she must always be creative and will pursue directing, to fill in gaps. An Update From Public Relations Intern Liz Aguilar
After New Years Day, I left for my next great adventure in Nicaragua – the land of lakes and volcanoes! I spent my January Term leading a service trip to a rural village called Zacataloza in the northern mountainous jungle. Our service team spent three weeks building a school for local children and learning more about their culture. As a reflections leader I was able to help my team reflect on their privilege, service, and desire to continue participating in civic engagement even after the trip. Overall, the experience was extremely rewarding, we finished building the school for Zacataloza, and we continued to explore different regions in the country. 

Now that I’m back at DePauw University finishing the remainder of my studies, I can’t help but reflect on how meaningful all of my experiences were abroad. I plan to continue working as an intern for student off campus study to try and help students pursue incredible opportunities that will help them grow. But for now – here’s some beautiful pictures of the last of my 10 month journey off-campus!
