Living with the Impacts of Terrorism (w/ Ann Travers)

Join me Thursday, March 30/23 at 1pm on the VoiceAmerica Business Channel!

The most personal and gripping episode I’ve ever done.

We plan for various crises and disasters, making plans to prepare and respond to such things as terrorism, but what we often forget are those that have been impacted terrorism. In the most personally gripping and heartfelt episode I’ve ever done, I’m joined by terrorism survivor and victim advocate, Ann Travers.

Ann talks about her experiences of growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and how it impacted – and still impacts – her today.

1. Defining terrorism, living in fear, The Troubles;

2. Ann’s personal story of terrorism, the hurt, survival and lingering impacts;

3. Ann’s Law, victim’s rights, re-traumatization, and support.

It’s an episode that raises the question of why we prepare and respond to disasters, but we seem to fall short when it comes to caring for those living with the impacts of terrorism…or any disaster.

Don’t miss this episode! If you are a survivor of terrorism and want to talk to someone, you can find help at www.seff.org.uk

Don’t suffer alone!

MIRACLE MOMENT®

“Nobody cares how much you know,
until they know how much you care.”

~ Theodore Roosevelt

A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDER/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CYNTHIA BRIAN

Cynthia Brian

When I was only eleven years old, a newly ordained young priest came to our parish. He was from a dairy farm in Limerick, Ireland and felt very out of place in very liberal and loud California. Since my family were fruit farmers and cattle ranchers, we invited him out to our place and he immediately felt at ease.

As he acclimated to life in the United States, he and I developed non-denominational youth programs. By the time I was in high school, our teen programs were the most popular with adolescents coming from all over northern California to attend. Father Pat McGrath became a mentor to many, but especially to me. The motto he lived by and I incorporated into my life was “Care, share, and be fair.”

In these tumultuous times, I find that adage to be more important than ever. Our Kindness Coordinator, Karen Kitchel, advises us to take a deep breath, think a kind thought, then proceed. This is a wise recommendation.

If we can all pause and remember that no matter what is transpiring, we are all in this together. When we care more, we share more.

Be the Star You Are!® has packed many cases of brand new books to ship to shelters and organizations in need of these resources as a result of the natural disasters that have occurred throughout the United States. If your organization is in need, please contact me so that we can include you in our Operation Disaster Relief program. We really do care and we want to share.

The Pear and Wine Festival is next Saturday, September 25th from 11-2pm with a live concert from 2-4pm. At this outdoor event, our volunteers will be following CDC protocols. More info at https://www.bethestaryouare.org/events. We hope to see you there.

Please care about your fellow citizens and get vaccinated. Wear a mask. Employ social distancing. We need to stop the variants from mutating. Covid is not something we want to share.

Be safe and enjoy back to school in-person learning.

Care, share, and be fair.

Sending healthy thoughts,

Cynthia Brian

Kind conversations-kidsSTART A KINDNESS CONVERSATION

A Minneapolis parent shared her story about how her two young boys chose to make hygiene kits to donate. They helped make a list of needed items, all went shopping, and put everything together. Next was delivering them to a shelter.

“As a family, this allowed us to talk about different people’s situations, and how we can help. Our boys learned to be grateful for things like food, water, our home, and basic needs.  Each month we take on a new project listed on the website  Doing Good Together.  This provides ideas for simple, yet meaningful ways to give back, spread kindness and engage in conversations we would not otherwise have” commented Ann K.

This fantastic organization, Doing Good Together, has many tools for families to spark kindness. Check out their “Start Kind Conversations.”

Karen Kitchel who penned two chapters in the book, Be the Star You Are! Millennials to Boomers Celebrating Gifts of Positive Voices in a Changing Digital World, is the Kindness Coordinator volunteer with BTSYA. Clevelander Laura Mineff, president of Array Design Studio and host of Dynamic Insights for Your Home Environment on the Variety Channel of VoiceAmerica.com Talk Radio will have Allyson Y. The Better Medicare Alliance is a non-profit, 501(c)(4) advocacy coalition that brings together Medicare Advantage beneficiaries; health plans, hospital systems, providers, businesses, and advocacy organizations, which support Medicare Advantage. The goal is to promote and sustain the federal policy that enables the option of Medicare Advantage within Medicare.
BMA is a source of information on the experience in Medicare Advantage plans and the payment and delivery of care. Medicare Advantage is the part of Medicare that provides comprehensive, high quality, affordable health care coverage to seniors and people with disabilities. Medicare Advantage plans focus on prevention, coordinated care, chronic care management, and innovations in provider payment models that reward value over volume.
Schwartz will talk about her work to protect and sustain Medicare for seniors today and into the future as well as discuss the importance of home visits under Medicare Advantage plans with improving the health and quality of life for seniors by providing medical examinations in the comfort of their own homes.

Good Grief welcomes Katy Butler

KB office fave 015

Katy Butler has written one of the best books on what’s wrong with end of life care in the field today. When Katy went through her parents’ final years, she felt compelled both as a daughter and as a journalist to explore what could have improved that time, especially for her father. She quotes him as having said, “I’m living too long,” and she heartily agreed. But convincing the medical system to let him go proved nearly impossible. Through sharing the book and through her work as a speaker and teacher, Katy has set out to change the system that makes a good death so difficult to find. She is a wonderful speaker and promises to enliven Good Grief! Join us on Good Grief Radio Wednesday May 6th at 2 PST.
