Cella’s Chat: Why Love Heals: Health As a Natural Consequence of this Healing Energy

DeanShrockDean Shrock, Ph.D, is a mind-body-spirit medicine specialist and the author of two books:  Doctor’s Orders: Go Fishing and Why Love Heals.  His first book is not about cancer as much as it is about life. Dr. Dean Shrock, will discuss his book, Why Love Heals, which discusses while working with cancer patients, he witnessed how bringing more joy and meaning into life surely could affect a patient’s quality of life.  Dr. Shrock’s research published in 1999 found that it extended their length of life. He concluded they lived longer because they felt listened to, cared for, and supported. People who are busy doing what they like to do not only tend to forget their aches and pains, but experience a positive effect on their quality and length of life.

Dr. Shrock was very intrigued by his finding that feeling loved and cared for could extend survival with cancer. This culminated in his 2009 bestselling book, Why Love Heals. Dean Shrock, Ph.D. began training to be a lecturer in a self-help program with its founder, Ken McCaulley. Shrock returned to college in 1980, graduating from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio with a master’s in Community and College Counseling in 1983, and completing his doctorate in Counseling Psychology in 1986. His doctoral dissertation was titled, Relaxation, Guided Imagery, and Wellness. In 1986 Dr. Shrock completed a post-doctoral internship where he developed a research proposal for the Cleveland Clinic to test the effectiveness of guided imagery with cancer patients. In 1987 he interned as a staff psychologist with the Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in State Why love HealsCollege, Pa. While there he also interned with Dr. Carl Simonton at the Simonton Cancer Center where he initiated his research with psychological approaches to cancer care. In 1988 Dr. Shrock was hired by a physician management group to provide psychological services for their cancer centers. Here he developed a wellness program whose primary purpose was to instill a greater “will to live”. While bringing more joy and meaning into life surely could affect a patient’s quality of life, Dr. Shrock’s research published in 1999 found that it extended their length of life. He concluded they lived longer because they felt listened to, cared for, and supported. His experience and expertise led to his being invited to co-author the chapter on Mind-Body Medicine in Dr. Donald Abrams’ and Dr. Andrew Weil’s 2009 textbook, Integrative Oncology. Dr. Shrock wrote a book in 2000 about the wellness program he taught and the insights he gained. This book, Doctor’s Order’s: Go Fishing, is not about cancer, as much as it is about life. Readers can use the information to get well or stay well. People who are busy doing what they like to do not only tend to forget their aches and pains, but experience a positive effect on their quality and length of life.   However, Dr. Shrock was very intrigued by his finding that feeling loved and cared for could extend survival with cancer. This culminated in his 2009 bestselling book, Why Love Heals. He now resides in Yachats on the Oregon coast and lectures regularly about his “Going Fishing” approach to life. His books and presentations highlight his discovery that joy and peace of mind are essential for health – and how to find them. “Cella’s Chat” airs live on Thursday at 1 PM Pacific / 2 PM Central / 4 PM Eastern on The VoiceAmerica Health and Wellness Channel. Cella’s Chat: Do You Recognize Power and Control in Domestic Violence Situations?

domestic abuseAs I sit here with tears of disbelief after watching a documentary on domestic violence (“Crime After Crime” or “Telling Amy’s Story” are two powerful documentaries to watch on this subject), I am stirred and moved to talk and bring awareness to this subject.  Many people know that my passion is speaking about suicide prevention and awareness as I, too, have come face to face with this devil.  Recently, I have been getting more involved with the domestic violence issues in my community, which are not just isolated to the Hampton Roads, Virginia area, but are an epidemic around the world!  Did you know that every 9 seconds a woman is beat?  Yes, I said seconds, not minutes, hours or days!  I, myself, buried for years the fact that, not only did I witness domestic violence in my own home, but my first relationship also contained the cycle of power and control.  Domestic violence IS ultimately about control.

To help you better understand this cycle, I am including information from the Power and Control wheel which I hope helps you, or someone you love, identify the patterns of abuse and violent behavior an abuser may exhibit.

Power and Control Wheel:

  • Intimidation: Making the partner afraid by using threats, looks, and gestures.  Destroying the partner’s property. Abusing pets. Wielding weapons or kitchen implements.
  • Emotional Abuse:  Putting him or her down.  Humiliating the person.  Playing head games.  Not taking responsibility for one’s own actions.  Ridiculing the partner’s appearance or sexual performance.
  • Isolation:  Controlling what he or she does. who the partner sees and talks to, what he or she reads, and where the partner goes.  Limiting the partner’s outside activities.  Using jealousy to justify actions.
  • Denying, Minimizing, and Blaming:  Making fun of the abuse and not taking his or her concerns seriously.  Saying the abuse  didn’t happen.  Shifting responsibility for the behavior. Saying the victim caused it.
  • Using Children:  Making the partner feel guilty about the children.  Criticizing the partner in front of the children. Telling the children the partner doesn’t love them.  Interfering with visitation.
  • Economic Abuse:  Preventing the partner from getting a job, or demanding the partner work longer hours or get a second job. Making the partner ask for money.  Not letting the partner have access to family income.
  • Gender Privilege:  Treating the partner like a servant, acting like the “king or queen of the castle.”  Being the one to  define the partner’s roles.  Making a false allegation.
  • Coercion and Threats:  Making and/or carrying out threats to do something to hurt the partner.  Threatening to leave the partner or report the person to welfare.  Threatening to make a false accusation.

A few other statistics that you may find helpful are:

  • Females experience the highest amount of intimate partner violence between the ages of 16-24.
  • Among female teenage victims of violence, a former or current boyfriend or girlfriend was responsible 94% of the time.
  • 1 in 4 people have been called names and harassed by a partner via text message.
  • 30% of teens in relationships have been “stalked” by their partners 10, 20, 30 times an hour through text messages that ask “Where are you? Are you with someone? What are you doing?”
  • Over half the rape victims report being raped between the ages of 12-24.
  • Half of the reported date rapes occur amongst teenagers.
  • 1 in 3 teens report knowing a friend or a peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped or physically hurt by a dating partner
  • 57% of teens knows someone who has been physically, sexually, or verbally abusive in a dating relationship.

AngercontrolsyouGenerally, I don’t fill my blogs up with statistics, however, I feel the extreme need to get this information out.  I think the staggering facts above are clear that much of this abuse happens in young relationships.  It happened to me as well.  What we think is love is merely possessive behavior designed to look like love by manipulating one’s feelings.  It isn’t love to smother a person, track their every move, stalk them, blow up their phone with text messages or physically touch them in any manner that is abusive.  It is also a common pattern that the controlling abusive partner turns around after the abuse occurs and melts into a tyrade of “I’m sorry’s” and “I love you so much” language that it becomes so deep you could literally trudge through it with rubber boots on.  This is part of the abuse cycle.

If you are in this situation or someone you love is in the situation, please know there is help.  You can always go to the police, get a restraining order, obtain advice from our Clergy, find a local domestic violence shelter in your area or contact a domestic violence advocate.  Unfortunately, sometimes the violence escalates upon a person’s decision to leave.  Remember, we are valuable and each person has the right to be treated with kindness, express their feelings peacefully, earn and spend their own money, wear what makes them comfortable, be talked to respectfully and end a relationship that doesn’t make them happy.

Sometimes you are most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.

Just as a caterpillar sheds its skin and becomes a butterfly, Cella’s life fell apart and she too was reborn. From the outside, life appeared perfect. As is the reality for many women, Cella thought it was her personal obligation to take care of everyone’s needs but her own. That is exactly what she did up until May 13, 2008. She was married to a military man for twenty years who was often absent during that time due to his job. This left her to raise two boys, work full time in the legal field, all while thinking it was perfectly normal to run herself into the ground. Cella’s own battle began as the perfect storm of circumstances came together to initiate her downward spiral into illness and depression. Feeling hopeless that she would never salvage the person she was before, Cella felt her only solution out of the pain was to take her own life. As an attempt survivor, she learned that the greatest resource was the healer within. Now she works with people to help them rekindle their passion for life. As a certified Nia instructor and Ageless Grace educator, Cella is also versed in many healing modalities including Qigong, Tai Chi, nutrition and wellness. Through speaking, writing, and the dance arts, as well as the creation of a woman’s support group, it is Cella’s desire to help others to manifest and transform their lives to find their personal empowerment. A true testament that all things are possible, she is walking her talk while teaching others to do the same.

Cella’s Chat: Gratitude, Can It Really Change Your Life?

cove

Do you realize how gratitude can change your life? How does gratitude promote well-being?  I make it a practice to say five things I am grateful for daily.  I never could have imagined this simple habit could change my life as it has, bringing positive results in every way.  Today I sat for a moment and took a walk backward in time, thinking about the beautiful life changes that have taken place.  When I allowed myself to be thankful for the way things were – instead of “wishing” my life away on what I didn’t have, the doors opened up and great things started to manifest.  Examples would be a healthy relationship (marriage), finally quitting a job that was joyless to working and living my passion, inspiring others to heal and live their passion and the list goes on.  Some facts about gratitude are:  gratitude makes you happy.  Yes, a five minute a day gratitude journal can promote happiness and wellbeing – improving your health, relationships, emotions, personality and career.  I mean, winning the lottery sounds great right?  However, because of hedonic adaptation, we quickly get used to the money and stop having as much fun with it as we once did, hence going back to not feeling satisfied and happy.  How about the fact that gratitude generates social capital?  According to an article written by Amit Amin (The 31 Benefits of Gratitude You Didn’t Know About: How Gratitude Can Change Your Life) in two studies with 243 total participants, those who were 10% more grateful than average had 17.5% more social capital.  Gratitude makes us nice, more trusting and social not to mention, more appreciative.  This results in deeper relationships and improved marriages.  Not bad, right? Did you know that gratitude can boost your career?  It makes you a more effective manager, helps you network, increases your decision making abilities, productivity and helps you get mentors and protégés.  So, this results in a greater ability to achieve your career goals and makes the workplace a friendlier atmosphere to be in.  A few other great benefits is that is boosts our emotions, helps develop our personalities, creates optimism and reduces materialism…just to name a few.  Psychological and behavioral research has shown the surprising life improvements that can manifest from the practice of gratitude.  A study was conducted by psychologists Michael McCollough (Southern Methodist University) and Robert Emmons (University of California) on the act of gratitude.  The study broke the group up into three parts – the participants of all three groups were asked to keep a journal.  The first group kept a journal on events that happened during their day – not necessarily good or bad; the 2nd group was asked to record unpleasant experiences; the last was asked to make a list daily of things they were grateful for.  The results of the study showed that daily gratitude expresses results in higher reported levels of alertness, energy, determination and optimism.  Also, the group expressed less stress, anxiety and depression exercised more and achieved more goals they set.  Another study showed that gratitude not only can be deliberately cultivated but can increase levels of well-being and happiness among those who do cultivate it.  You see, when we are grateful for even the hardships we experience, our vibration shifts and the doors open. When you realize their is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.  Lao Tzu.

Cella’s Chat: What Does Your Past Reveal? By Marcella Zappia

quotes-life10[1]

I have always felt it was important to leave the past exactly where it should be…in the past.  However, this weekend I came across some long forgotten, but definitely eye-opening, letters and journals I didn’t even remember I had.  As I started to clean out bins of things I could finally let go of, it was like opening a time capsule of information, memories, and feelings. Opening envelopes of letters I had written and then carefully tucked away after the recipient read them (as that person lived in the same house), it finally became evidently clear that my desperation and eventual suicide attempt did not “just happen.”  It was years and years of accumulated behavior patterns and cycles that were never broken until the suppression finally wore me down … the ultimate act of my body and soul telling me … ENOUGH! In order for anyone to truly heal, we need to break through the blockages and cycles that keep repeating. These blockages will continue to surface until dealt with and healed in the proper manner.  Blockages can be such things as unresolved issues, denials, thought patterns, the wounded inner child, beliefs, labels, etc.  When these blockages appear and are not resolved, they eventually show up as illness or disease.  That is what happened in my case.  Slowly but surely my body gave me signs, nudgingly at first, and then glaringly evident and in my face.  I was so caught up in a cycle of taking care of everything and everyone, ignoring symptoms that arose in my body, trying to control all the uncontrollable situations that were arising around me as my household ship was sinking and my other half (at the time) was literally out-to-sea!  As he was working to keep his ship afloat and fight for our Country, I was sinking as I was trying to fight for our family.  I felt extremely alone – like I was in quagmire of quicksand trying to keep my head from going under.  Literally, the feeling was suffocating as my body slowly faded down to nothing without my even noticing.  Comments of “are you ok” became a constant at my job because I was too “busy” to pay attention to my symptoms. The bottom line, I was suppressing emotions and not dealing with them.  Living a cycle of trying to please and be perfect to prove my value and hold up the contract I thought I made with myself which was; I had to be perfect.  If an emotion is not dealt with, it gets stored as a shadow personality and will continue to come out in different ways trying to be heard.  My story and this cycle is not just mine.  This is the story of many young women trying to find their place, trying to prove their worth and be perfect in an imperfect world.  It usually shows up in young relationships where many times one person is trying to keep a relationship going and the unhealthy cycle begins.  A silent crying out of “accept me,” “love me,” “don’t leave me,” “I will do anything” – perpetuating the young love cycle of love/hate, jealousy, brooding and heartbreak. This eventually leads to the emotions of fear, guilt and anxiety because we haven’t developed a toolbox of healthy responses to what our future life will present to us.  The saying “if I knew then what I know now” clearly comes to mind as well as “with experience comes wisdom.”  Now that I am on the other side of these lessons and always continuing to learn, it is hard to watch my children partaking in the same emotional merry-go-round without the foresight to understand that how they react now will mold their future life path.  We do have the power to change our thoughts, learn from our mistakes, heal our lives and find our joy.  As parents we must, with guidance, allow our children to walk their own path so they can acquire their own individual toolbox of skills and responses to navigate their future.  Once we get the lessons, we can focus on the present and allow the past to stay where it is…in the past.   Sometimes it’s the scars that remind you that you survived. Sometimes the scars tell you that you have healed.― Ashley D. Wallis

Cella’s Chat: How Did I Get Here? By Marcella Zappia

depressioneye[1]

From side of the fence to the other side, I cannot begin to tell you how I got here.  The one thing I can tell you, however, is that “yes, life is worth living” and I am proof!   Three years ago the title of this blog would have been “no, life is crap and I am outta here….”   Seriously, that is just about where this fabulous creation called stress lead me.  That tiny, little word is full of giant repercussions.  Never would I have thought that this word would work its way so quietly into my whole being.  It snuck up on me and “bam” it had me in its hawk-like claws…piercing my whole being and not letting go for anything.  I felt helpless against “it,” like it was my enemy and it wanted to destroy me no matter what.  Daily I would try to lift my spirits up and see the “positive” side of life but the stress continually grabbed me and dragged me deeper and deeper into a great abyss.  This lead into anxiety and then that word no one wants to hear – “depression.”  Oh no, not me! “I” cannot be depressed, what the heck is that?  I mean, I am Superwoman, right?  Yeah, with a capital “S”…I could raise two boys who decided while their dad was away at sea to test my skills against those with the local fire marshals, police, guidance counselors, principals, neighbors and lawyers while taking care of a home, yard, pool, bills, a full time job, family drama, mother and mother-in-law all while smiling and doing yoga!  Wasn’t this normal?

So, when this body of mine started breaking down, my logical mind said “hey, what horrible disease do I have?”  I mean, literally my body was diminishing before my eyes and I had every symptom of every disease you could imagine.  No kidding!  I was poked, prodded, tested, scanned, x-rayed, scoped, biopsied, etc.  I had so many x-rays and CT scans I should glow and I was the equivalent of a human pincushion.  My clothes were falling from my body to such a degree that the safety pins that I put on each side of my pants were not even holding them up anymore.  I thought they were a fashion statement, however.  I was ok with this, my friends and family were not.  “Your depressed” was the word I would hear but the thought of watching another commercial for Cymbalta or any of the other million drugs for depression really didn’t do much for me.  Did you ever notice when you have something wrong with you, every commercial on television is about that problem?  What was wrong with everyone, I was sick, not depressed and just because I totally stopped sleeping – no lie – was no reason for alarm.  I suppose once I couldn’t concentrate or drive a car anymore was about the time I started to consider I might be depressed.

For anyone interested in the rest of this story – check in for the next post.  I promise, it sounds bleak but there is an incredible silver lining!!
