There is an old story about a man who was walking through the jungle. Sensing a presence, the man looked over his shoulder and saw a tiger slinking through the foliage, following him. Quickening his pace, the fellow followed the path he was on until he reached a cliff. Looking back once again, he saw the tiger was still there and coming closer. Standing with his toes over the edge, the man noticed that there was a vine running down the cliff face and he swung out onto the vine in order to escape the tiger. Just as he quickly lowered himself down, the tiger jumped. Slashing over the edge with her paw, the tiger narrowly missing catching the man as he made his decent. As the man started to work his way down the cliff face, he looked down to the bottom and saw yet another tiger, the mate of the one at the top. The tigers settled down to wait. Hanging there, the man saw that two mice, a white one and a black one, had started gnawing on the vine above his head. It was only a matter of time before the vine would give way. Looking off to one side, he noticed a wild strawberry gleaming crimson in the sunlight. He picked it, put it in his mouth and tasted…How sweet it was.

Worrying about the future and missing the sweetness of the moment seems to be a way of life for most people. Of course, there are plenty of things to worry about today, if that is what you are used to. There was plenty to worry about in our parents’ day also and in our grandparents’ and so on back through time. And yet they survived. We are all a living testament to that. Perhaps we worry as a part of the culture we were raised in, as a survival strategy, passed down from generation to generation. Have you ever stopped to think that worry is not an integral part of well-being but something extra, unneeded and unexamined that we have absorbed from those around us?

You can taste the wild strawberries that exist around you in your everyday life by being here in this moment, rather than worrying about things you cannot immediately do anything about, such as the state of the world, global warming, political conflict, wars, etc. Those things do exist but in this moment so does the chair you are sitting in, the air you are breathing and the floor under your feet.

Perhaps you tend to worry about something more personal, such as your finances, the state of your relationship or your health. Well, does worrying actually accomplish anything positive? Worry is the mind’s projection of possible futures, based on what we have experienced or known from the past.

Being Here in this moment is the great transformational agent. If you are actually engaged in being here, then life does not have to repeat itself. Unknown creative solutions can present themselves and if you are here, you are available to see them.

There is a Country Western song by Tim McGraw called, “Live Like You Were Dying.” It is about a man who discovered he had a potentially terminal disease and goes out and does all the things he only dreamt of doing…and many he hadn’t even considered; riding a bull, going fishing, being a true friend, talking sweeter, loving deeper and giving forgiveness he had been denying to others.

For the most part, we don’t live our lives as though it is our last day. There are things we do which, if we were dying, we would never indulge in. If the end were near we wouldn’t be wasting those few precious moments. The trick is in discovering how to maintain this sense of urgency and vitality without threatening oneself with dire circumstances such as imminent death. Although the song “Live Like You Were Dying” is just a song, it is representative of what can happen if you engage in your life without preference, without listening to the story of whether or not you feel like doing something and without thinking that this moment doesn’t matter.

How do you engage in your life as if this moment matters when you are truly out of touch with that, and are lost in a loop of worry, you might ask? Well, you could start by washing your dishes, making your bed, cleaning up your office, completing those things that have been incomplete and that you ignore by worrying about other things. What if worry was just a sophisticated way to procrastinate? Have you ever considered that if you are really busy, fully engaged, getting things done, your rarely have time or interest in complaining about your life?

So, if you need a place to start, look around you. Handling any little incompletion is a great start. Then move on to the next thing. You might start with the things you like to do first. Get in a rhythm. Then keep including what’s next. You will be pleasantly surprised how, as you handle the minutia of your life, the answers to how to handle the “big” things magically appear.

Catch and Release,
An Angler’s Guide to Enlightenment

By Ariel & Shya Kane

Ariel & ShyaIt has been many years since we have caught fish for food. Back then we had never heard of the practice of “catch and release.” In those days, we would go to a lake, fish for the day and pull in our catch without particular thought to what we would do with the fish after. We would eat as much as we could, give away the rest but from time to time the catch was more than we could consume. Never having seen it done, it simply never occurred to us that one could hook a fish and then simply free it to swim back to its fishy home in the murky depths, rushing river or the deep blue sea.

Then we were introduced to the sport of fly fishing and ultimately to the idea of catch and release. Nowadays when we go fishing, you will find us in the midst of nature, casting a fly in order to see a fish up close and personal before we release it back to its watery world.

It wasn’t too long ago that we realized that catch and release can be a lifestyle as well. Most people go about their lives gathering realizations and holding on to them as if they need the extra food in order to survive. But that is a bit like putting a fish in your pocket to eat for later. It stinks!

As you go about the waking up process, as you go about your day with awareness, and ultimately as awareness becomes a lifestyle, you will see many things. You will see what knocks you off balance. You will see what brings you back to center again. You will discover hidden talents, and you will see mechanical behaviors that no longer serve you. Yet, if you try to hold onto what you have seen and tuck it away to be taken out and remembered and played with and teased out over time, this magical freeing moment of “aha” will become a slick and slimy mess.

So next time you see something about yourself, something that reveals itself spontaneously or even after years of searching, let it go. Simply slip it free of the hooks in your mind and go back to fishing again. There are plenty of fish in the sea. You don’t need a stash to prove to yourself that you are getting somewhere. You don’t need to store them so that you will survive for another day. Simply cast out again and keep fishing.

Waking Up From the Dream By Ariel & Shya Kane

Waking Up From the Dream By Ariel & Shya Kane

Waking Up From the Dream By Ariel & Shya Kane Back in the mid-eighties, we walked into a health food store and noticed a tarot card reader who, for a nominal fee, offered short sessions for the store’s clientele. The two of us were departing within the week for a six month intensive course at a meditation center in Europe and thought it might be fun to see what she had to say about our imminent trip. We had high hopes that these six months would produce the Self Realization for which we had worked so long and hard over many years to achieve. So when our turn came, we sat before her with expectations of a fun, lighthearted reading into our futures that would affirm that we were on the right path, a path that would bring us the illumination we desired. Contrary to our expectations, we were in for a big surprise. It is shocking how disturbing it can be when someone gives you information that goes in opposition to your point of view. Here, next to the 7 grain bread and organic beans, this tarot card reader told us what she saw with the best of intentions and ultimately, we did not like it. Gazing at the faces of the cards before her, she said, “I see you are going on a trip.” This sounded like a good beginning. We hadn’t given her any information. Next she said, “And this trip is not a short vacation but a lengthy stay at a distant land. You will be traveling over a large body of water so wherever you are going, it is overseas. The cards indicate that this journey is one that is not lightly undertaken but one of a spiritual nature, rather like a pilgrimage of sorts.” Wow, we thought, she is really good! If there had been a hidden camera recording this event, the tape of our meeting would now show us eagerly listening to catch every pearl of wisdom that this reader had to impart. It is funny how we human beings idealize our lives hoping to prove that the road we are traveling is the perfect or right one and maybe it is for awhile. But the smooth road we were on with this reader was about to take a very sharp and bumpy turn. She certainly had created credibility with us by describing the near future events that were part of the script of our lives but then she said something that sent us into an immediate panic and we broke into a cold sweat. Looking at the pictures intently, as if to catch some subtle nuance, this woman solemnly pronounced that as a result of this trip and our experiences, we would become – disillusioned. Oh No! We wanted illumination from this investment of our time and energy, not disillusionment, whatever that meant. It sounded so negative and we wanted our lives to be positive. Here we were, about to invest six months and a lot of money and we certainly didn’t want to be disillusioned as a result. To tell you the truth, it is hard to remember what happened next. The idea of being disillusioned by this trip of a lifetime, which we had planned to save us from ourselves and the domination of life, was suddenly upsetting. We thanked her, rather stiffly, and left that store deeply shaken by those few words that we disagreed with. One week later we were in Europe. Six long months later, we were leaving Europe, in fact, disillusioned. On our journey, the two of us discovered that we were not interested in a counter culture way of life which by its very nature is based in opposition to that which already exists. Rather, we realized that we wanted to live from our truth, which is not for or against the so called establishment. When we got back to the States, we thought about the tarot card reader and what she had said and finally broke out the dictionary to look up the word disillusion. We were surprised by its definition because we had thought of being disillusioned in all the terms one might find in a thesaurus, i.e. failure, disappointment, falling short of, dashing one’s hopes, etc. In fact, the primary definition of disillusion is “to free of illusion and false ideas.” What it means is that the illusion under which you have been living is dissolved so that you see the truth of the situation, as it is, not as you would prefer it to be. This disillusionment was the beginning of our Self Realization. After we returned from Europe, we discovered that nothing was going to save us from ourselves and the domination of life. No matter where you go, you bring yourself along. Over the past years, as seminar leaders, authors and individuals living our lives, we have come to realize that the only time life dominates you is when you are not living in the moment, when your hopes for the future create an illusion of how it will someday be better than it is now. True freedom happens when the illusion dissolves and you live life directly in each moment not as you would prefer it, but as it is. If you want to live life to your potential, rather than strive to be a better you, discover who you are and how you are being in any given moment.

Achieving Your Goals and Being in the Moment By Ariel & Shya Kane

Achieving Your Goals and Being in the Moment
An Excerpt from Practical Enlightenment
by Ariel & Shya Kane
We’re not implying that you shouldn’t have goals. What we are saying is that there is a different way to go about fulfilling your heartfelt desires, where there is well-being every step of the way and where you recognize that the result is not more important than this moment.  Here is an example:

Our friend Menna sold her first novel, Men, Money and Chocolate, to a publisher that liked it so much that they also paid her an advance for a sequel, which she had yet to write. Thrilled, Menna wrote her second novel and submitted it to them. They rejected it. Feeling stressed but determined, she wrote another version of a sequel and the publisher didn’t like it either.

Discouraged, she closed herself off from her husband and her world while she got down to business. After much stress and struggle she completed yet an entirely different novel, which she submitted. They rejected that attempt also.

By now Menna was tired, irritable, and feeling like perhaps her first book was an accident.  Maybe it was just a fluke that I wrote something good in the first place, she thought. Sitting at her desk, she would gaze longingly at the garden out back, wishing to be out in nature; but thinking that this was off-purpose, she would wrestle her attention back to her project.

Menna eventually wrote an outline for yet another novel, which she submitted to her publisher. As a result, they called her in for a meeting and told her she needed to go in another direction.  How she was going to go about it, they didn’t know. But if something didn’t happen soon, she would be obligated to give back her advance.

Tired, frustrated, confused, upset and feeling pressured to get it done in truth it was time to take a break. Fortunately for her, Menna was registered to attend one of our transformational immersion courses in Costa Rica along with her husband Artur. Once there, she let everything go. She forgot about home, forgot about being a writer, let go of trying to get somewhere and trying to get her book done. She simply invested herself in being where she was while being there for the experience. She rode horses, zipped through the tree tops on a canopy tour, ate delicious food, enjoyed friends and made new ones. She also sat in the course room and truly listened.

Menna marveled at the birds, how the rain could fall hard enough to practically drown out speech, only to have the sky clear a short time later, and she watched the ground steam as the sun reemerged. She discovered her husband once again. She enjoyed Artur – really enjoyed him. She fully engaged. She slowed down. She fell into the moment and as a byproduct effortlessly bypassed her intelligence and accessed her genius.

It was when Menna returned home to Cambridge, England, that she actually remembered she had a project that was due. She had literally forgotten all about it. Oh yes, she said to herself, I have a book to write. Three weeks later it was complete. Happier Than She’s Ever Been was a great success. Each book she has written since has been easier and more successful than the one that came before.

When you push yourself to get somewhere, common wisdom says that you will accomplish great things. But what if stressing yourself to get to where you think you need to be is not a necessary component to being successful? There is only one of you on a planet of billions of people. You already are a success.
