The Global Compact: The Leader Summit 2016

The Global Compact is an incredible alliance created by the United Nations in 2000 which is a call to all companies to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. By doing this, the private sector and institutions in all countries can take and generate actions that will advance societal goals.

One of the ideas of the Global Compact is that ‘Business as a force for good’. With this in mind, companies commit to world sustainability; here is where business takes a shared responsibility for achieving a better world.

I was be in New York City attending the United Nations Global Compact’s LEADER SUMMIT, where leaders convened to translate the Sustainable Development Goals into business action and innovation everywhere.

Join me as we learn how to make global goals our local business and how businesses can be a change agent in attaining a better world.

Millennial’s Entrepreneur Says: You Shouldn’t Be the Smartest One In the Room by Marcia Zidle

As entrepreneurs and small business owners, many of us have that “can do anything” mentality. Regardless how skilled and motivated you may be, trying to grow a business while running it is a struggle many startups face. The solution, according to is to find people that are better at somethings than you and hire them. So if you are the smartest one in the room you failed!

The Entrepreneurial Spirit and Journey of a Millennial!

My guest On The Business Edge is Daniel Moore, a real estate investor and creator of a software service company. In 2008, at the age of 23, Daniel bought his first investment property, and by the age of 28 became a full time real estate investor after being inducted into Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Hall of Fame. Daniel has accumulated extensive first-hand, real world knowledge on the “how-to’s” of real estate investing as well as building a business gives him the lifestyle he wants for his family and freedom to give back to his community.

Listen to this podcast and learn: Why culture fit is important especially, even it’s your first hire; how to manage a remote team of professionals across the US and the world; why giving people room to fail is part of his leadership style and why it works; his formula for scaling his business: Hire Right! Systematize and Automate! Let Go!;   his # 1 challenge: Every day focus on the high payoff tasks, generating income, and how he’s trained himself to do that.

The key takeaway: Leverage other people’s time and skills. That’s why it’s important to not be the smartest one in the room. Do what you do best and then contract or hire those who can do it better, faster than you. Remember your time is money! Use it wisely.

How Having It All is a myth For Entrepreneurs

Most of us are familiar with the phrase, “You can have it all.” Some believe this is an accurate possibility; however, having it all creates specific challenge for entrepreneurs. My guest on The Business Edge is Deborah Gregory who was Senior Attorney for the IRS’ Office of Chief Counsel for more than 12 years and then made the leap to being an entrepreneur as co-founder of Gregory Law Group. She shares the joys and challenges of starting a business locally and now taking it regionally and even nationally. She tells how she balances her role as business owner along with her role as a wife and mother to two boys. Listen and learn: why purpose was behind Deborah’s decision to leave a successful career and start a business; how she prepared to make this transition and the biggest thing she had to learn – being a marketer; the top challenges of scaling a business: staffing up, putting in systems, maintaining quality control; the many ways she’s handling the work-life balance challenges in her business and with her family; and why “putting on blinders” was a key lesson she learned in her entrepreneurial journey. Many companies experience a great deal of difficulty during the expansion stage and may even disappear. When this occurs, it is usually because the entrepreneur or small business owner is unable to cope with the managerial problems that go hand in hand with growth. A Stage II company needs a leadership infrastructure and operational systems that lets it function efficiently and effectively on a day-to-day basis. It needs a Finely Tuned Management Machine!

Michael Kramer, founder of the ManageHubAccelerator, shared on this week’s Business Edge podcast the science for building a successful, scaleable and saleable business. The number one requirement is that you have a management system that controls ALL its moving parts. Without the system your business is disorganized. Your quality is inconsistent. Your customers complain. And you’re stressed out!

With the system, your business is transformed into a finely tuned management machine that is innovative – productive – profitable. Listen and find out how to sign up for the ManageHub Quick Start Workshop. It’s completely free and you’ll get instant access to ManageHub software, training, and support.
