Raising Independent, Self Confident Kids

- • Hosts Brigitte Jia and Katie Choo, both independent, creative, and confident teens, explore the importance of helping youth discover their own abilities and face their own struggles. Does independence suit some kids more than it does others? Do other cultures parent differently? Parents serve as a major influence in their children’s career development and career decision-making. Though we teens may believe that we are acting with complete independence from their wishes, parents definitely have a large impact on us in this aspect.

The duo interview Dr. Donald Moses, co-author of the book, Raising Independent, Self-Confident Kids. Dr. Moses explains clearly the importance of allowing kids to fail as well as helping them develop skills that will assist them to be fully functional adults rather than resorting to self-destructive behaviors. He talks about drugs and salaries in a no nonsense manner. Every teen and every parent needs to tune in to this episode of Express Yourself! as challenges are always on the horizon and this conversation has lots of answers.

Selected as one of the “Leading Physicians of the World” in the field of psychiatry, Donald A. Moses, MD is a psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of adolescents and young
adults. He has many years of experience in treating patients with psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy, which has given him a clear understanding of the importance of children developing particular skills so that they later can be functional adults rather than resort to self-destructive behavior and difficulty functioning. A Message from Cynthia Brian

It has been another devastating month of disasters. The senseless shootings in Las Vegas and the current calamitous fires blazing in California are reason enough for everyone to mourn. We are all so saddened by these events that one friend of mine speculated that we will be suffering from post-traumatic stress. I agree.

Our volunteers were busy packing boxes for Operation Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief, then, quickly added Hurricane Irma when that storm hit Florida, which then was multiplied to include Hurricane Maria. We changed the name to Operation Hurricanes Disaster Relief.

But on October 9^th, the catastrophe hit home with the California fires burning in our backyards, literally. The majority of my family and relatives were evacuated in Napa, Sonoma, and Solano counties along with over 100,000 residents. Ten thousand firefighters and first responders from all over the United States, Canada, and even Australia arrived to battle the blazes in our glorious wine country. As I write this, the torching is not yet contained and the death toll has risen to 40 with several hundred people unaccounted for. These wildfires are the deadliest in California history and have ravaged hundreds of thousands of acres destroying thousands of homes, businesses, and lives.

Yet, Californians are strong. Californians are brave. Californians are resilient.

It is challenging to watch an apocalypse occur without feeling hopeless and helpless. As my teen volunteers and I dropped off boxes of new books, games, and other resources to shelters in the Northern California region, we witnessed communities coming together with grace and gratitude despite losing so much. We were emotionally and spiritually helped by helping others. Read what teen volunteer Zahra Hasanaian had to say about her experience below.

Express Yourself! Teens Aid Hurricane and Fire Displaced through Be the Star You Are!® Operation Disaster Relief

When disaster strikes, it’s easy to send prayers, watch the news, or complain about how our world is becoming more and more dismal. It’s harder, but also much more rewarding, to send hope as well as concrete help.

This week, I drove to Napa and Solano counties with other Be the Star You Are volunteers and Voice America Radio personalities, Chelsea Pelchat and our Executive Director, Cynthia Brian, to deliver boxes of books to evacuation centers housing people who fled their homes after recent fires in Northern California. Those affected by the fire have been squatting in these centers for days without any source of entertainment. We figured that anyone, young or old, can always enjoy a good book.

Often, I think of myself as helpless against things as arbitrary and ruthless as natural disasters. But my attitude changed with every smile and thank you we received as we handed books to people in person. Sure, I had too much homework on Thursday night and too little time to do it. Yet, it’s important to realize that helping people who have lost everything is more important than a nightly assignment or any other daily task. We went to several different evacuation centers, and the kindness of the people at all the centers was astounding.

What I learned that day is that in the most dire of circumstances, our only source of hope is to help each other. Hope heals.

Put Together an Emergency Supply Kit

Whether you are involved in an earthquake, tornado, hurricane, flood, fire, or other calamity it will behoove you to have an emergency supply kit in your vehicle and a larger one in your home. For your home, make sure you know where all of your important documents and other items are that you don’t want to lose. Sometimes, as was the case with these California fires, a matter of minutes was the difference between life and death. Make copies of your passport, driver’s license, credit cards, and have some small bills available. Know where your chargers are for phones, tablets, and computers. Back up your computers and keep files in the cloud or off site.

For your car, fill a backpack or small case with the following:

First Aid kit

Work gloves

Towelettes

Bottled water (1 gallon per person per day)

Blanket

Walking shoes

Peanut butter

Honey

Protein bars

Personal hygiene kit with toothbrush, soap, medications

Matches

Candle

Flashlight with extra batteries

Eating utensils

Breathing masks (Niosh-N95)

Be the Star You Are!® Helps with Operation Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief

Hurricane Harvey is the first hurricane to hit United States land since 2004 and the destruction and devastation to Texas is monumental. The National Weather Service highlighted that “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” remained a threat to southeastern Texas and portions of southwestern Louisiana with over 50 inches of rain expected. First responders and medical teams are on the scene as people are evacuated and rescued from the flooding.

The people of Texas, particularly Houston, and New Orleans are currently experiencing record floodwaters which have taken lives and continue to cause unprecedented damage in the region. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates that, in Houston alone, more than 30,000 people have sought emergency shelter. Harvey, downgraded to a tropical storm, is presently lingering along the southeast coast of the Gulf of Mexico, bringing heavy rains and storms to Louisiana as well.

Families are huddling in shelters.

Health Rap reporter Alex Pawlakos talks with hosts Zahra and Brigitte about studies that show that music is more effective than drugs. Seo Young believes that music tells stories, relives memories, creates special moments in our lives. Did you know that it is known that by 4000 BCE the Egyptians had created harps and flutes, and by 3500 BC lyres and double-reeded clarinets were made?

Asya Gonzalez is obsessed with music. The hosts and Asya have a lively conversation about their favorite artists and genres.

Aim to Shoot Reporter Katie Choo provides a wide variety of careers available to everyone, ranging from singers and music producers to radio DJs and music directors. Turn on the music, grab your earbuds, sing, dance, and rock out. Music is a healthy exercise!

Bio:

SeoYoung Kim is a freshman in high school. She was born in Incheon, South Korea, and moved to
America when she was in third grade. She is greatly passionate to learn more about different types of music from all over the
world. She plays the violin, piano, the vibraphone, and occasionally sings. Her favorite subjects in school are history and orchestra,
because she is always curious about learning about the past and predicting the future. She loves getting involved in the
orchestra because she greatly values the lessons learned through teamwork and music.

Message from Founder, Cynthia Brian

For me Thanksgiving is every day because I truly believe in being grateful. So often we tend to focus on what we donât have instead of offering thanks for what we do have. I am grateful for my health, a loving family, a roof over my head, food in my belly, friends to play with, nature to grow me, work for which Iâm passionate, and for all of you who support, volunteer, donate, and believe in the mission of Be the Star You Are!Â® Here at Be the Star You Are!Â® we truly believe in empowerment, starting with encouraging and mentoring our volunteers to be the best they can be. Everyday we are reaching for the stars and helping others learn to land on them too.

As the holidays begin, we hope you will give yourself the gift of year-end giving by opening your wallets to make a tax deductible donation to Be the Star You Are!Â®. We make it so easy for you.

OPERATION HURRICANE MATTHEW DISASTER RELIEF

Be the Star You Are!Â® has been working diligently to give a new book for the holidays to families and children in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina who suffered losses during the horrible storms of Hurricane Matthew. Brand new books totaling over $15,000 have been shipped to date. In collaboration with 5 A Rent A Space, teen volunteers from Be the Star You Are!Â® will help children write letters to Santa and enjoy arts and crafts as well as get a framed photo with Santa Claus himself!. Cookies, fruit, candy canes, and hot cocoa will be served. The event is FREE to the public. Bring your little ones to a visit with Santa.

On this 242nd original radio program, the teen hosts and reporters of Express Yourself!â¢ celebrate FIVE years of weekly broadcasting on the Voice America Kids Network.

Hosts Asya Gonzalez and Maria Wong share their early memories of being reporters, the thrill of hosting, and their appreciation for the opportunities experienced on Express Yourself!â¢. Katelyn Darrow who has been a host and reporter for four of the five years recalls when she began as a high school freshman and what she has learned from interviewing and reporting as the years have passed.

Henna Hundal chimes in with her appreciation for the opportunities gained and the one-of-a-kind experiences she has enjoyed while making a difference for others in our world.

With his World Watch report, Joven Hundal, speaks of the past yearâs accomplishments of outstanding teens all around the world, a refreshing look at how youth are changing the face of the earth for the better.

Is gratitude a part of your daily life? Former Express Yourself!â¢ host and reporter, Katelyn Darrow returns to the program to challenge listeners to create a gratitude journal and offer thanks for the little things in life every day.

Health Rap reporter Alex Pawlakos takes the opportunity to share tips for a safe Thanksgiving, including how to safely cook a turkey.

Did you know that Thanksgiving is the most dangerous holiday of the year because of home fires? Hosts Asya Gonzalez and Brigitte Jia interview Christian author Lee Ann Mancini about her multiple award winning series of childrenâs books, the Adventures of the Sea Kids. Itâs an hour of gratefulness in preparation for the big day of appreciation-Thanksgiving.

Bio: Lee Ann Mancini is currently an adjunct professor at South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary. She has taught Bible Study for over 10 years. Lee Ann graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Regent University (1990), a Masters in Biblical and Theology Studies from Knox Seminary (2014), and a Masters in Christian studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (2014). She also received her certificate of completion from the Ravi School of Apologetics (2011). Her multiple award-winning series, Adventures of the Sea Kids, is a 32 page picture book series that helps to encourage children to have a foundational, lifelong relationship with Jesus while being kind, caring and loving to others, trusting Him during difficult times.
