Teachers are some of the greatest people with whom we will ever cross paths. Hosts Zahra Hasanian and Brigitte Jia interview triple threat actor, producer, and coach, Natalie Mitchell about her evolution from working as a child actor in the movie Jack with Robin Williams to becoming an acting coach, producer, director, and founder of her own production company, Emergence Films.  Her insights on teaching and the entertainment industry are grounded in values and empowerment.


Report of Music Magic, Seo Young Kim discusses how music fits as a unique type of strategy for teaching because it’s collaborative, offering the opportunity to express opinions and relate to the listener. First time reporter of Ode to Literature, Caitlin Sim shares a very point that not every book that teaches is a philosophical or a political book. Many fiction novels are more frequently read than “non-fiction” books. Several book are discussed including Mitch Albom’s book, Tuesdays with Morrie.
When one becomes a teacher, one learns from the students. The secret is to find a way to teach as a peer and become an equal.

BIO: Natalie Mitchell
Natalie Mitchell has a B.F.A. from the University of California at Santa
Barbara and an M.F.A. from the Graduate Acting Department at New
York University. She performed as leads at the S.T.C. (Shakespeare
Theater Company, D.C.), appeared in various National Commercials
like her controversial Subway Commercial which was talked about
on The Daily Show, The Huffington Post, Conversation Nation, and
Good Morning America, and she is currently the Host of Crime
Stoppers on CBS. Aside from acting, she has coached actors
internationally on how to prepare for an audition by preparing the
physical body using her yoga and Alexander training. In addition, she
is a producer and co-founder of Emergence Films, which is an all-
female production company that prides itself on producing films that
offer female roles that are multi-dimensional. Emergence has two
flagship films: Follow the River (a female western) and 30 Camels (a
film based on real life experiences while traveling through Morocco).
Natalie Mitchell resides in L.A. where she continues to work as an
actor, coach, and producer

Maria Wong and Brigitte Jia host an informative program about sexual assault awareness and prevention among teenagers. From discussing the novel, “Accused: A Retaliation Novel #2” by Yasmin Shiraz that focuses on the rampancy and consequences of sexual assault among teenagers on college campuses in Segment 1 to talking in depth about Brigitte Jia’s article, “Roots of the Juvenile Court System” in Segment 2, Maria and Brigitte elicit and raise awareness of what sexual assault is, why it occurs, and college administrations’s support towards sexual assault victims.

In Segment 3 and 4, Javier Lopez, a preventive educator from the Community Violence Solutions and facilitator for the Male Ally Program, talks to Maria and Brigitte about preventive measures, the importance of consent, and educative programs for sexual assault awareness and prevention.   Remember, if you are a victim of sexual assault, know that you are not to blame. “The Summer Of Love was something special, We were so young and so free” Jefferson Airplane

A Message from Founder and Executive Director, Cynthia Brian Fifty years ago was the famous or perhaps infamous “Summer of Love” in San Francisco where over 100,000 young people migrated from around the world essentially launching the global hippie explosion of a counterculture revolution.. Maybe you were there or maybe you are the child of a flower child and completely exhausted from hearing about the good ‘ole days of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll. The nostalgia surrounding that complex time period is being showcased in multiple museums and exhibits around the San Francisco Bay Area. If you want to take a stroll down memory lane for a flashback of the 60’s, make sure to check out the various events. School is out, Father’s Day is here, graduations, birthdays, weddings, camping trips, water sports, barbeques, and multiple outdoor activities highlight the summer season. Whatever you do, be safe, smart, and enjoy your family and friends as they are precious.

 

The Moraga Faire booth was a huge success. A Father’s Day History by Karen Kitchel Sonora Louise Smart Dodd first brought up the idea of a Father’s day in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart.  When Sonora’s mother died in childbirth with her sixth child, William, who was a veteran of the Civil War, was left to raise the newborn and five other children by himself on a small farm in Washington. Sonora realized how strong and unselfish her dad had been raising his kids as a single parent and she thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other Dads like him.  Sonora wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday in June because it was close to her Dad’s birthday. Instead the first Father’s Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.  In 1966,  President Lyndon Johnson made the third Sunday of June Father’s Day, but it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day a national holiday — about 60 years after Mother’s Day had been made a national holiday. Other countries also picked up on the idea of Father’s Day. While many followed suit by celebrating it on the third Sunday in June, some decided to honor Dad on different dates. And what’s the best gift you can give if you’re lucky enough to have a Dad?  Write him a note and just tell him that you’re glad to be his child. Happy Father’s Day to all who hold this very special title! Some heroes don’t’ have capes. They are called DAD!

Special guest is author of We Were the Lucky Ones, Georgia Hunter, tracked her grandfather, his parents, and his siblings – a family of Polish Jews – as they scatter at the start of the Second World War, determined to survive – and to reunite. In 2000, a family reunion opened her eyes to the astounding war stories of her grandfather and his family. Brigitte Jia traces the importance of the Mother/Child relationship through art. In nature, the bond between mother and child is one of the strongest possible. Your mother brought you out into the world, and she defines it throughout your early years. A mother helps to shape the individual as a person.

BIO:  Georgia Hunter
Georgia was in high school when, thanks to a research assignment, she discovered that she was a quarter Jewish, and that she came from a family of Holocaust survivors. Fifteen years later, Georgia set off with digital voice recorder and an empty moleskin notebook to unearth and record her family’s remarkable story. She spent nearly a decade traversing the globe interviewing relatives and digging up records from every possible source she could think of, eventually piecing together the bones of what would become her novel, We Were the Lucky Ones.
