Digging Deep-Gardening with Cynthia Brian

Christmas trees come very close to exceeding nature.  ~Andy Rooney

When my children were youngsters, cutting a tree was the big event of the season. We’d don our Santa hats, grab a bundle of rope to tie the tree to the top of the car, put film in the camera, and off we’d go, singing Christmas carols while plotting our adventure. It could take hours walking through a farm, checking out tree after tree, debating the merits of each. Sometimes we’d visit two or three farms before finding the perfect one. Afterwards, at home with our freshly cut treasure, we’d light a fire, drink hot cocoa and eggnog, eat persimmon pudding and Italian panetone, put on the Christmas music, and dance around the house as we spruced the fir with popcorn and cranberry strings, homemade ornaments, tinsel, and of course, plenty of twinkling lights.

unnamed (6)

One day my son had the bright idea that we should grow our own Christmas trees in order to have a never-ending supply of Yuletide enchantment. With the best planting season for evergreens between January and March, as soon as the small containers of conifers went on sale for $1.00 post holiday, we nabbed twenty for our forthcoming Christmas tree farm. We chose a prime spot at the top of our hill, prepared the plot, cleared the weeds, planted the seedlings, protected them with wire from marauding munchers, maintained soil moisture, and waited. The kids were very attentive to their trees. By year three, pruning and shaping the trees into conical forms began. Who knew that “Christmas trees” didn’t automatically grow into perfect Christmas specimens? By year seven, they cut their first glorious imperfect tree and by year thirteen all of the trunks were too large for any tree holder. Instead of cutting another tree, we potted a large Norfolk pine, added it to our entrance, where this oxygen producing, carbon dioxide absorber has served as our beloved arbre de Noel.

unnamed (5)

History, legend, or a combination of the two chronicles the tales of 16th century Germans bringing evergreens into their homes as holiday decor after Protestant reformer, Martin Luther, witnessed the stars sparkling through the forest trees and cut a tree to enjoy indoors. In 2014, Christmas trees are as significant to American culture as apple pie. But it wasn’t until 1848 that Puritanical America embraced the idea of the “pagan” Christmas tree.  The ever-popular Queen Victoria and her German Prince Albert were sketched with their children gathered around a decorated Christmas tree and East Coast society adopted this new fashionable trend. Currier and Ives jumped on the bucolic family festivity bandwagon by immortalizing vintage America in historic lithographs of cozy Christmas scenes including sleigh rides, crackling fires, candle lit chapels, snowmen, and tree decorating.

Yet, the love of winter evergreens was celebrated long before the arrival of Christianity. In ancient Egypt, the sun god Ra was honored on the longest night of the year,December 21, and the shortest day, December 22 with palm frond decorations to symbolize life over death. The Romans marked the solstice with evergreen boughs in anticipation of a prosperous spring. The Druids used greens as symbols of eternal life while the Vikings believed that evergreens were the chosen trees of their sun god, Balder.

With the advent of electricity, Thomas Edison presented the possibility of twinkling tree lights without as much fire danger from branch tied candles. Europeans preferred small trees of four feet, Americans sought plants that would reach the ceiling. Decorations in the early days included strands of nuts, berries, apples, and popcorn. Today, a fortune can be spent on accessories and unique ornaments fit for a king from hand carved Nativity scenes to hand blown glass angels.

When to buy, cut, and trim the tree vary from country to country. Many American families get into the December spirit immediately following Thanksgiving while many Europeans wait until Christmas Eve to launch their rituals. Evergreen garlands, boughs, ivy, mistletoe, wreaths, poinsettias, and holly join the enticing kitchen aromas of gingerbread, marzipan, and hot mulled wine making our Christmas castles merry and bright.

unnamed (4)

Grown in all fifty states, Christmas tree farming is big business, although it is mostly small farmers who do the growing, planting as many as two thousand trees per acre. Seventy seven million trees are planted annually as American consumers purchase approximately 30 million farm grown trees valued at more than $1 billion.  Fresh trees (to me the only way to play) outsell artificial trees three to one. Young families who are starting their own traditions often prefer to cut-their-own at a Christmas tree farm, enjoying a day in search of the perfect tannenbaum, as our family did in years past.

As you banish the blues with the greens of a pine, fur, spruce, redwood, cedar, or cypress, you’ll be rewarded with the fresh fragrance of the wild woods. Remember to keep your cut tree watered as most farmed trees are chopped down in October or early November then trucked to the retailer. While they won’t dry out outdoors, once indoors, your specimen will need a quart to a gallon of water per day depending on the size.

This year, whether your tree was grown on a plantation or in your backyard, bring the botanical brilliance of a live tree into your seasonal festivities and celebrate the magic.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,

Your branches green delight us!

Wishing you seasonal sparkle, glow forth to enjoy being home for the holidays.

Cynthia Brian’s Mid Month Reminders

COOK with either fresh or dried herbs. You’ll need more when you use fresh. Dried are more potent. For every tablespoon of fresh herbs in a recipe, substitute 1 teaspoon of dried.

CREATE a stunning DIY holiday table arrangement using a combination of ornamental cabbage, lilies, evergreen branches, white roses, and pinecones.

LOOKING for a last minute gift that will be unique and useful? Check out your local garden retailers for holiday ideas, including a pot of drought resistant kalanchoe or a Christmas cactus in bloom.

TRIM low hanging branches of redwoods, pines, firs, and other evergreens to use in wreaths, garlands, and holiday ornamentation.

CARE for your land and your land will care of you. Our good earth is Mother Nature’s Christmas gift to us.

Happy gardening, happy growing, fa la la la la!

Appreciation, Gratitude, Illness and Growth

Holidays

Appreciation, Gratitude, Illness and Growth ©2014 Joan M. Newcomb

We’re in the holiday season, amidst the hustle and bustle of shopping and eating and family and friends!

If we hit the holidays head on, we operate solely from our “to do” list. We operate unconsciously. Things get done because this is the way they’ve always been done. Things have to be done perfectly. We get stressed out. We get sick.

Step back and see the bigger picture. It’s a time of Thanksgiving, but what does that mean? Grateful to have your Christmas decorations up already? Grateful for Black Friday so you can finally get that coveted item on sale?

Appreciation is a lighter energy, and a broader perspective. It’s also associated with prosperity and abundance. Whenever you pay for something, you’re expressing your appreciation for it. Whenever someone pays you, they’re expressing appreciation for your service!

New Years brings the end of the holiday, the end of 2014, and the beginning of a whole new cycle of growth. Whenever we go through expansion, our bodies have to adjust. Our vibrational frequency raises, and the denser aspects within us rise to the surface to be cleared.

We can experience this as needing to sleep more or eat more, but we can also experience it as illness. Our bodies want to be nurtured through growth experiences!

Hot baths, chocolate, movies, books, naps, all are great ways to coax your body through a growth experience.

Express appreciation to your body by giving it a little extra self-care this holiday season. You might avoid getting sick!

Garden Gratitude

“Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.” Henry Ward Beecher

As Thanksgiving approaches we find ourselves giving thanks for our family, friends, health, and jobs. But how often do we stop to give gratitude for Mother Nature? As I strolled through my garden during my morning meditation walk, I was overcome with appreciation for the natural world that surrounded me. My garden enhances and nourishes all of my senses. The fiery ruby leaves on my liquid amber or the saffron pumpkin cloaked potted pistache in their autumnal wardrobe add a carnival of color to the landscape. The fragrance from my Angel Face roses is a sweet scent that I dream of bottling. The quail calling to one another, the gurgling of the fountain, and the whistling of the wind through the palms are sounds that calm my spirit and engage my inspiration. On my rounds, I always stop to sample the edibles, tasting the new florets on my cabbage, a sprig of mint to freshen my breath, or plucking a few cumquats to add to my afternoon tea. Touching everything, I arrive back in my kitchen with bouquets of blossoms or moss covered branches to decorate my desk and most of all, to stimulate my creativity.  Over the years, I’ve developed a sixth sense surrounding my outside world. I feel more connected to life, to nature, and to myself while I’m in the garden. And I am grateful for the kinship.

Our gardens are growing universities, teaching us daily the values for enhanced living. From my garden teacher I have learned patience, responsibility, gentleness, kindness, and forgiveness. There are no mistakes in nature and failure is just fertilizer. When it began to rain the last day of October, I quickly ran to fertilize my brown, dry lawn. Today it is emerald green, instructing me about the importance of resiliency.  We all bounce back from challenges and tomorrow is another day.

Thanksgiving turkeys.jpg

This year when we celebrate Thanksgiving, my table will be laden with the goodness from my garden including my mashed home grown potatoes infused with thyme, sage, and rosemary, a wine roasted turkey stuffed with orchard apples, onions, and grapes, plus a fresh picked salad of baby lettuces, arugula, kale, fennel, and sliced Fuju persimmons. Grace will be one of gratitude for the bounty and beauty that Mother Nature provides every day of the year, no matter what the season.

Liquid Amber in Fall - 2

As I leave work in San Francisco, each time I witness the spectacular sunset in my rear view mirror going east on the Bay Bridge, I breathe a sigh of relief as the grazing cows on the hillside come into view.  The forests of trees, the smell of the wild grasses, the capaciousness of our open spaces, and the sounds of birds replace the honking horns, crowded streets, and urine soaked sidewalk odors of the city.  I give thanks that I have the opportunity to spend my days in a tranquil environment where I breathe clean air and enjoy the lushness of the valleys within a short drive of cultural amenities. Even the eerie howls of the coyotes singing at the moon, the herds of hungry deer dining along my driveway, and the wild turkeys roosting in my pines roots me in gratitude for my rustic simplicity.

I am home. And home is where my heart is.

Cynthia Brian’s Mid Month Reminders

  • ⎫ FERTILIZE your lawn and yard at the first drops of rain. We’ve had a warm fall, so it’s not too late to give a jolt of nutrition to help the landscape withstand the winter months.
  • ⎫ PICK fuju persimmons now to eat and enjoy fresh, in salads, or other appetizers. As soon as your Hachiya persimmons are bright orange, they can also be harvested, however, they cannot be eaten until soft.
  • ⎫ PLANT chrysanthemums to brighten your walkways, containers, and patio.
  • ⎫ ADD a tropical flair to your Thanksgiving décor with an arrangement of the beautiful orange Birds of Paradise.
  • ⎫ CONGRATULATE the wild turkeys crossing through your landscape. They are lucky they are still eating grubs and not part of the Thanksgiving feast!
  • ⎫ PLANT easy to grow, low maintenance Dutch iris, snowdrops, grape hyacinth, daffodils and other spring bulbs for a surprise splash of color come March or April.
  • ⎫ DIVIDE overgrown perennials.
  • ⎫ RAKE leaves, adding them to the mulching pile. Let your kids frolic in them first, making memories that last a lifetime.
  • ⎫ WEED weekly as the rains come to avoid an overabundance of unwanted plants in spring.
  • ⎫ SOW wild flower seeds for a natural, woodsy look.
  • ⎫ GIVE thanks for your garden, our hills, valleys, and Mother Nature.

May you enjoy a cornucopia of blessings and joy this November with your loved ones. Thank you for being such dedicated, involved readers. I appreciate you.

Happy Gardening. Happy Growing. Happy Thanksgiving.

How To Hold Your Own During The Holidays

How To Hold Your Own During The Holidays ©2014 Joan M. Newcomb

It’s that time of year again. We’re heading into the time of family gatherings. We’re being inundated with ads, movies, and shop windows filled with gifts and expectations.

When you visit with relatives, everyone reverts to old behavior patterns. No matter how much therapy you’ve had, it’s hard not to fall into the familiar scripts. How do you not match the prevalent energy level?

Perhaps you don’t have family and are happily on your own. How do you convince well-meaning observers that you’re a healthy, well-adjusted person who happens to be spouse-and-child-free?

How do you hold your own during the holidays?

We cover a lot of these issues on our November 5th radio show including some helpful Consciousness tools. I thought I’d add a couple more here.

The Bug-Zapper: Imagine yourself surrounded by iridescent blue light, just like those electronic devices that hang outside your back door, keeping flying insects from entering the house. Any negative thoughts or projections that come at you from the outside gets instantly zapped. However, it also neutralizes any negative thoughts or projections from *inside* as well! I used this at a wedding last year and it felt wonderful!!

Different Colors: When you walk into a home or a party you can feel the prevalent energy of the place. One way to not be either raised up to their level of frenzy or brought down to their level of gloom, is to be a 1/2 above the energy. Imagine what that vibration would be if it were a color (some people hear or feel it) and let yourself be a half step lighter. You won’t be too out of sync, but enough to keep your own sense of self!

Doorways and Portals: Every door or archway can step you into a different Universe, as effortlessly as stepping into different movies at a multiplex or different soundstages in Hollywood. Just by getting up to go to the restroom, you shifted realities in several ways. By the time you return you can be in an entirely different scenario! Your family still looks the same, but the atmosphere can be completely different.

All of these tools work best when done playfully, from a space of amusement and fun. Try these out and see what happens!

Express Yourself Teens Talk about Home for the Holidays

star ornament xmas

When talk centers around the holiday season, teens get excited. Christmas, Channukah, Winter Solstice, New Year, Kwanza-whatever the celebration, youth around the world are participating. Hosts Youngjoo Ahn and Alex Lee mingle with reveler reporters Jane Fessenden, Asya Gonzalez, and Sara Trail in this Yuletide extravaganza. You’ll learn about the history of the various traditions, both religious and secular, the favorite moments, tree decorations, home made gifts, yummy treats, and the special family traditions that make holiday festivities unique. The New Year is upon us and as the ball drops in Time Square, what will you be doing and thinking? Deck the halls, grab a cup of hot cocoa, jingle the bells, and join our party! Happy Holidays to one and all. Ho, ho, ho!

This is a great time to make a big difference for those who have suffered such a big loss during this holiday season. Thanks for caring.  DONATE FOR OPERATION DISASTER RELIEF.
