ADHD: Diagnosis or Deficiency By Leslie Carol Botha

what-is-ADHD

Tune in this week on Wednesday, December 12th at 9 am Pacific time to Holy Hormones Honey! for our show, “ADHD: Diagnosis or Deficiency? with our guest Julia Rucklidge.   Catch this episode and others on demand everyday here!

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral imbalance and the most commonly diagnosed disorder in childhood often persisting into adulthood. According to the CDC the number of children diagnosed with ADHD in the U.S. stands at 5.2 million. And that number is growing exponentially along with trends in ADHD medication use. Many other neurological symptoms are associated with ADHD including bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, social anxiety and panic disorders. Julia Rucklidge PhD has conducted a body of work from ADHD, bipolar and OCD using a micronutrient formula in lieu of medications. The outcome of her studies conclusively finds that the vitamin and mineral supplements had positive outcomes alongside an absence of side effects. She believes that further research needs to be conducted in larger controlled trials using the multinutrient approach. ADHD – diagnosis or micronutrient deficiency – you decide.

Originally from Toronto, she did her training in neurobiology (McGill) and Clinical Psychology (University of Calgary). Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. For the last 6 years, she has been investigating the role of micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes.

Are Women on the Pill Still Female? By Leslie Carol Botha

Sweetening the Pill book_cover

Tune in this week on Wednesday, December 5th at 9 am Pacific time to Holy Hormones Honey! for our show, “Are Women on the Pill Still Female?” with our guest Holly Grigg-Spall at  Catch this episode and others on demand everyday here!

Holly Grigg-Spall in her book, Sweetening the Pill or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control states that the perfected body in our culture is not female – but male. She raises an interesting question: if the essential biological center of femaleness is suppressed with synthetic hormones, then can we say that women on the pill are still ‘female’?

Holly Grigg-Spall will be sharing her research and concerns about synthetic hormone use.

We should all be concerned. By 2015 over 200 million women will be on birth control. How many of us know how this drug works – how many are told about the potential side effects like migraines, dizziness depression, anxiety, panic attacks, blindness and even death. According to Holly – over 80% of women who pop the pill experience these symptoms over their life time.

What kind of bargain do women make with Mother Nature when we prevent nature from running its course?

About Holly Grigg-Spall:

Author of Sweetening the Pill Or How We Became Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control, Holly is a women’s health writer and activist whose blog documenting her personal transition off the pill gained international recognition from The BBC, The Washington Post, The Times (UK), and The Independent (UK).

Holly began writing a blog in 2009. When in London, England she had an article published in Easy Living on the side effects of the birth control pill. Her research was prompted by her own experience with Yasmin. After researching the pill Holly realized that after 10 years on synthetic hormone contraception, she needed to come off the pill completely. The blog became a place to document her transition and the steep learning curve that came with that choice.

Holly has contributed to Ms. Magazine’s blog, and she writes regularly for the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research blog re: Cycling. Holly has been interviewed on BBC Radio and now appears on Holy Hormones Honey!

Predicting Weather by the Moon: Why climate is unlikely to be changing

climatechange

This week’s episode, Predicting Weather by the Moon: Why Climate Change is Unlikely the be Changing  on Holy Hormones Honey! airs  Nov. 21st LIVE at 9 am Pacific.  Catch this episode and others on demand every day here!

According to Ken Ring, the climate today is the same as 100 years ago.  He believes it is the ‘record-breaking industry’ making us think something frighteningly strange is happening in the world of nature, completely independent from the world of business.

Instead we are fed a media frenzy of records broken in national temperatures, rainfall amounts, hurricanes or droughts.  We are told we have never been this warm before or as cold. This or that is ‘worst ever’, ‘worst since records began’ or ‘worst in living memory’. Climate change comes from accounts of temperature records being smashed.

Ken predicted the tragic February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch which claimed 185 lives, six months before it happened. Many had chosen to leave town on the named day and were grateful for the warning. Although his predictions upset both geologists and politicians, it also won him widespread interest and support for the theory that the moon controls both weather and earthquakes.

The dirty little secret in women’s healthcare

Health care reform

This week’s episode, The Dirty Little Secrets in Women’s Healthcare on Holy Hormones Honey! airs  November 14the  LIVE at 9 am Pacific.  Catch this episode and others on demand every day here!

Introduction & Background

A dirty little secret in the world of women’s healthcare – there are relatively few data guiding medical decision-making. Indeed, across all medical specialties the auspices of evidence-based are crumbling quickly in the face of open access and open science. Recent reports suggest less than 50% of all medical treatments have any data to support their efficacy. Of that evidence, much could be suspect given the rampant payments from pharmaceutical and device companies to physicians and other decision-makers, plus the well-documented publishing bias and even fraud plaguing the scientific publishing industry.

In women’s health, matters are even worse. Not only are evidenced-based, clinical practice guidelines nearly non-existent in Ob/Gyn (only 30% of practice guidelines based on data) and women still not included in early stage clinical trials in sufficient numbers, but regulatory agencies do not mandate gender analytics for new medications. The result, post market adverse events – think death and disabling injury – are more common in women than men.

Why do women die and suffer from adverse events at a much higher rate than men?  Because most medications reach the market without the appropriate testing or analytics to distinguish why women might respond to said medications differently than men.  Even in the lab, male rodents are used about 90% of the time.

The lack of data in women’s healthcare is unacceptable. We know that the larger companies who sell these products have no motivation to gather or make public these types of data – too many billions of dollars are at stake – and so, it is up to us, the women who need safe health products for ourselves and our families, to be the change agents.

That’s where Dr. Marrs and her company Lucine Health Sciences come in. Dr. Marrs believes that patients and physicians ought to have credible and unbiased information from which to make healthcare decisions. She created Hormones Matter – Where health and hormones make sense to fill the credibility gap in health media. Hormones Matter is online, community publication offering readers cutting edge research, policy and health news with analysis of issues and topics that affect women and their families. The publication gives voice to patients with difficult to diagnose and treat conditions and provides insight and interaction from health communities around the world.

Since much of the data to make informed healthcare decisions do not exist, Dr. Marrs has made it her company’s mission to collect those data. To that end, Lucine through Hormones Matter is running five online studies with many more planned:

  • ·         The oral contraceptives Survey safety, off-label prescribing and efficacy
  • ·         The Hysterectomy Survey– causes, outcomes and efficacy
  • ·         The Gardasil Cervarix HPV Vaccine Survey – safety and side-effects
  • ·         The Lupron Side Effects Survey
  • ·         The Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic Side Effects Survey

2013 Gardasil poster[1]

In 2006, Merck & Co. rolled out the award-winning “One Less Girl to Get Cervical Cancer” campaign to encourage parents to get their girls vaccinated against four strains of the Human Papillomavirus. Until that time, HPV was unheard of.  In the past 7 years, over 31,740 adverse reactions and 144 deaths from the HPV vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Many of these events have been life threatening and resulted in permanent disability.  Yet the government is claiming the injuries are a ‘co-incidence’ after vaccination.  The Canary Party, a movement created to stand up for the victims of medical injury, environmental toxins and industrial foods has initiated a video campaign to educate consumers about the potential dangers of the HPV vaccines. The vaccine-injured girls in the video are speaking out to reclaim their lives and dignity by emphatically stating “I am not a coincidence.”

Are we going to thrive – or just survive? Join Life Coach, Angela Bussio, creator of the “The Science of Attracting Joy™, and “Design My Destiny© on October 24 to find out how you can break out of survival mode and into a thriving, successful life.

At a young age, Angela discovered the principles or “rhythm” of creating the life that you desire.  Her life has been an experiment of both the effective and ineffective uses of the universal laws that govern our personal experience of reality.

After experiencing an almost magical era using these principles in her young adult life, Angela manifested an incredible man, and married him.  Over time, she forgot these early patterns.  This change of rhythm and focus created an extremely negative period in her life, while she was busy raising five children. Ultimately, at the height of a very stressful period she experienced a complete breakdown. Remembering her earlier experiences led her on a new quest to create a joyful life.

This week’s episode, Through the Looking Glass: Mental Wellness & Micronutrients on Holy Hormones Honey! airs  October 17th LIVE at 9 am Pacific.  Catch this episode and others on demand every day here!

In Lewis Carroll’s famous 1871 fable Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, the heroine ponders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror’s reflection. To Alice’s surprise, she is able to step through the mirror to an alternative world. In this reflected version of her house, Alice finds a book with looking-glass poetry, “Jabberwocky.” Realizing she is traveling through an inverted world, Alice recognizes that the verse on the pages are written in mirror-writing. What if we have been living in an ‘inverted world?’ For those with mood disorders – or addictive/compulsive behaviors it feels that way. Inverted, disconnected, alone and afraid. Caught in the rabbit hole of our minds. Anthony Stephan, the founder of Truehope Inc. is inviting you to walk out of the dark throes of your inverted world into an alternative world. What if we have been reading the script wrong? Instead of drugging our minds, we need to be feeding our brains micronutrients to optimize our mental and physical health.

 Tony

Anthony Stephan is the founder of Truehope, a leading brain health supplement company. His quest to find a natural solution for bipolar disorder started with a personal tragedy – the suicide of his wife, who battled bipolar her entire life, and the discovery that two of his nine children were afflicted with the disease. Through his hard work, he helped his children reclaim their lives. But he didn’t stop there – to date, he’s helped over 100,000 people through the Truehope Program, in over 600 countries.  There are now over 20 independent journal publications on his product.

For Stephan, the assurances of a Calgary psychiatrist, that his uncontrollable teenage son would never improve, and instead deteriorate was the prod to find an answer.  He was told he should prepare for another suicide in his family. “That hit me in the gut. Something snapped. I was not prepared to accept that God would put people on the Earth to suffer like this. There had to be an answer.”

Rise of Mental Illness in America With Leslie Carol Botha

Anatomy_of_an_Epidemic-cover

Don’t forget to tune in October 10th for Holy Hormones Honey!  at 9 am Pacific for our show on… The Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America

Episode Description

In Anatomy of an Epidemic, whistleblower Robert Whitaker asks why the number of adults and children disabled by mental illness skyrocketed over the past fifty years. In 1955, there were 355,000 adults in state and county mental hospitals with a psychiatric diagnosis. During the next three decades, (the era of the first generation psychiatric drugs) the number of disabled mentally ill rose to 1.25 million. According to government records there are now more than four million people in the US who receive a disability check because of a mental illness and that number continues to soar. Every day, 850 adults and 250 children with a mental illness are added to the disability rolls.

According to Whitaker, the astonishing increase in disability numbers raises the obvious question: “Could the widespread use of psychiatric medications–for one reason or another–be fueling this epidemic?”  Has the ‘psychopharmacological revolution’, failed consumers? Are we going ‘Mad in America?’

Robert Whitaker is the author of four books, two of which tell of the history of psychiatry. His first, Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine and the Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill was named by Discover magazine as one of the best science books of 2002. His newest book on this topic, Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America, won the Investigative Reporters and Editors book award for best investigative journalism in 2010.

Prior to writing, Whitaker worked as the science and medical reporter at the Albany Times Union newspaper in New York. His journalism articles won several national awards, including a George Polk award for medical writing, and a National Association of Science Writers’ award for best magazine article. A series he co-wrote for The Boston Globe was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1998. He also was director of publications at Harvard Medical School for a time.
