Living With Mental Illness with Leslie Carol Botha

art

My name is Laurie Pinard, and I live with mental illness.

Laurie Pinard is a 44-year-old woman who has fought her way back to health from the edge of darkness and despair. She lost everything she had, and she nearly lost her life. Laurie now dedicates her life to giving hope to anyone who suffers from mental illness with the message that it is possible to get well and lead a fulfilling, productive life.

Throughout young adulthood, Laurie struggled to understand the dramatic highs and lows of her emotions, and it was not until her early forties that she received the correct diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She sought help in the form of psychiatry, nutritional supplements, exercise and diet because medications never worked for her. Through this multifaceted support system, Laurie found a strength and resolve she never knew she had. It was a new found sense of hope that pushed Laurie to finally share her story with the world in 2011. Today, Laurie shares her story on Holy Hormones Honey!  Tune in live at 9 am PT on October 3rd or on demand anytime.

The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free BY LESLIE CAROL BOTHA

Do you need caffeine or sugar to help you wake up and/or get through the day?  Do you turn to alcohol or other substances to help you relax and unwind?  Do you hide how much you eat, drink, or smoke? Are concerned about your current dependence on antidepressant or other mood-altering medications? Have you been in recovery, but still have cravings?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then listen to Dr. Hyla Cass share information from her e-book The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free. All too often people with addictive behaviors are subject to judgments from family and friends.  But no one judges them more than the negative messages they give themselves.

Dr. Cass will explain that your addiction is not because you are a “weak” or “bad” person – it is because your brain chemistry is out of balance. She will share how the correct combination of healthy diet and specific nutritional supplements can correct these problems so you can reclaim your happiness and well being.  Tune in September 26th, to Holy Hormones Honey! at 9 am PT for the show!

Things We Don’t Talk About: ‘The Irritable Male Syndrome’

irritable male syndrome

Ever wonder why all we hear about is the anger and depression and irritation that women exhibit – especially at that time of the month? In a culture where ‘men aren’t supposed to cry,’ male depression, anxiety, and physical health challenges are often expressed in unconventional and difficult-to-recognize ways.

According to Jed Diamond – men suffer from hormone related irritability as much as women.  Depression, anger, fatigue, moodiness, anxiety, lethargy, low libido, and confusion are just some of the symptoms of a recently identified condition that affects men.

Diamond believes IMS (Irritable Male Syndrome) is in some ways similar to male menopause, but it can affect men of all ages. What often triggers IMS is acute or chronic stress.  Diamond will describe the symptoms of IMS; and explain how the volatile mood swings of the syndrome can wreak havoc in a man’s closest relationships.

Tune in Thursday 9 am PT to Holy Hormones Honey where Leslie Carol Botha discusses male hormones with Jed Diamond.

What Are Those Hormones Doing to My Body? By Leslie Carol Botha

hormone balance

The hormone cycle is a function of a highly evolved chemical feedback loop between the pituitary gland and the ovaries and uterus. Hormones are messengers and work on feedback loops that are dynamic. When the loops are interrupted – the messages become garbled.  Dr. Margarita Ochoa-Maya brings profound wisdom and insight to the importance of the symphonious hormone rhythm.

Balance is needed everywhere; in spiritual life, and in daily living. Balance is also necessary within the body.  When it comes to hormones, balance is key. When it comes to women’s hormones, estrogen is balanced by progesterone. The effect of one hormone offsets the effects of the other. Together they maintain an optimal balance in the body. Too much of one hormone or the other can lead to significant medical problems. Too much of a good thing can be bad; not enough is equally a pretty serious problem. But who is to say what enough is? Find out on Holy Hormones Honey!

Endocrinologist – Dr. Margarita Ochoa-Maya

Within the broad area of internal medicine, preventive medicine, women’s health, adolescent health, and endocrinology, Dr. Ochoa-Maya has developed extensive interest in metabolism, the hormonal mechanisms of organ injury, the pathophysiology of hormones, obesity, hypertension and diabetes. She is a specialist in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a seriously under-diagnosed condition that affects millions of women world-wide. She is very interested in the interrelationships between the environment, a healthy diet, routine exercise, and illness, including physical, psychological, and emotional health.

Dr. Ochoa-Maya demonstrates her ongoing commitment to patient education by leading open discussions focusing on her areas of expertise and expands this commitment by actively participating in community activities that promote health literacy. Her main efforts are to understand and to help others acknowledge the influence hormones have on total health, happiness and physical appearance.

Autumn Stringam: A Promise of Hope for Mood Disorders BY LESLIE BOTHA

Holy Hormones Honey! The Greatest StoryNever Told! debuts on the VoiceAmerica Radio Network on Thursday August 8. The show will air live at 10 AM MDT on the VoiceAmerica Health and Wellness Channel.

The radio show  is dedicated to every woman who has ever experienced a hormonefluctuation, from menarche to menopause!  Sponsored by Truehope Inc., The Leaders in Brain Health, the focus of the show will be on addressing core biological issues that cause mood disorders and/or mental illness from a micronutrient support perspective. Because no one can make a sound decision unless their brain functioning is intact.

For decades, the power of women’s hormone shifts has been unrecognized and underestimated. In fact, women make up the majority of mental health diagnoses’ due, in part, to a lack of education about the endocrine system and how and why our hormones affect our minds, moods, and behaviors. For too many years women have been labeled as ‘mentally disordered’ if they struggle with their menstrual cycle. Women will be the portal to sharing this information with the men and children in their lives. Because when women thrive, everyone thrives. Now that is true hope.

Autumn Stringam lg edit

Join Leslie Carol Botha when she interviews Autumn Stringam â€“ a woman with a family history of severe bipolar disorder (her mother and grandfather committed suicide because of the disease – and her now 20 year recovery from medications and institutions because of her father’s dedication to saving her life.

If you are looking for hope  then you are in the right place. Autumn Stringam, author of “A Promise of Hope” will be sharing her incredible journey from the depths of bipolar disorder to becoming a beacon for thousands of others when she changed her ‘hopelessness to healing’ with the use of micronutrients.

In 1995, Autumn Stringam had been using 13 drugs in different combinations with multiple hospitalizations and therapy for several years, to no avail. Her bipolar symptoms were out of control.  One terrible hospitalization after another for Autumn finally led her husband, to seek family help. Autumn was no longer able to drive, care for herself or 3-year-old son, and the psychiatrist demanded assurances of 24-hour adult supervision for Autumn when she was not in the hospital.

Using the Truehope EMPowerplus micronutrient combination, Autumn was able to eliminate all of her psychiatric drugs in only two months.

Autumn grew up in a bipolar household, losing both her grandfather and her mother to suicide by the age of 21. At 19, Autumn was diagnosed with Bipolar I with rapid cycles and Schizophrenic tendencies and before long had tried 13 different drug combinations, to no avail. Hospitalization and regular emergency visits to the doctor for sedative injections were common when each of the drug combinations stopped working.

Since starting the micronutrient therapy in 1995, which finally resolved her symptoms, Autumn has become an author, magazine contributor, public speaker and political advocate for the rights of the mentally ill. She is a mother of four and has dedicated her life to breaking the cycle of illness that plagued her family. She is educating and supporting other people who want to find total healing from the aftermath of mental illness.

Autumn’s inspiring memoir, â€œA Promise of Hope” (HarperCollins, 2007) is available on Amazon.com
