  • What is beauty?
Why is beauty such a concept that is so misunderstood?
Could there be one absolute definition of beauty
Billboards feature models with perfect, golden skin tone glows. Magazines sprawl open with images of stick-thin celebrities without a blemish or flaw in sight. In a world that is so fixated on outer appearances, it’s time to redefine beauty and our teen hosts and reporters offer ways to make you feel beautiful from the inside out. Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez have lively conversations on the meaning of beauty and self-confidence. They encourage listeners to tap into their inner beauty by smiling, standing up straight, thinking positive thoughts, and celebrating what you have instead of what you lack. Our talented singer and Back Story Reporter, Jennifer Lee, sings Carole King’s song, “Beautiful” which emphasizes that anyone is as beautiful as he/she feels. New reporter, Brigitte Jia, brings us her first segment of Art Attack, looking at the beauty of Japanese anime and manga.

The quote by Roald Dahl sums up the theme of beauty: “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

Asya Gonzalez-stinking feet - 4 henna hundal-CU fair
Life is full of conflict and challenges, yet we humans are full of resilience. Whenever we find ourselves in trying times, we grow, we change, we acclimate, we adapt. Hosts Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez navigate the topic of adapting to change with Global Talk reporter, Ryan Sim who uses the current California drought as an example of adapting to different scenarios.

RyanSim-2012-1

Henna and Asya also interview author Sandy Goldsworthy with her books Aftermath and Aftershock, as she talks about how adaptation has registered in her writing and her personal life. Henna and Asya share an in-depth look at what it means to be ready and willing to accommodate new conflicts and challenges by offering concrete tips including:
a. keep a gratitude journal
b. pay attention to your life
c. be a victor, not a victim
d. choose positive attitudes and actions
e. learn to relax and breathe
f. set smart goals
Change is important, it teaches us new lessons in life. How can we grow if we don’t experience change? Strategies that allow us to adapt to change help us live happier, healthier lives. Give yourself the gift of adaptability.

Express Yourself Teens With the on-air Be the Star You Are!® youth reporters about Time Management

Young or old, male or female, student or professional, if you’ve ever faced a deadline in your life, you know the allure of procrastination. Due dates always seem to defy clock, bombarding us relentlessly. The quest to use our time most effectively is a universal struggle. Hosts Henna Hundal and Katelyn Darrow with reporter, Asya Gonzalez lead a discussion on the necessity of time management. Some of their tips include: -Use an organizer -Know your deadlines -Learn to say “No” to some opportunities -Target to be punctual and early for your engagements -Find what distracts you and weed it out of your life -Don’t fuss about unimportant details -Prioritize and delegate – “Work smarter, not harder” Henna and Katelyn also interview college student creative author, Pema Donyo who inspires us with her ability to balance school and publishing. You’ll also meet the adorable star of the new Amazon series, “Just Add Magic”, Olivia Sanabia. Olivia enchants us with her bubbly, positive outlook and very grown up ways in which she manages her time for acting, studying, and play. Make sure to vote before February 15th for Olivia and Just Add Magic at Amazon.com. Use your time wisely.

Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity presents: Express Yourself Teens With the on-air Be the Star You Are!® youth reporters.

Taylor Swift, John Green, You Tube, Table 58. What do they have in common? Bold fashion styles. Beauty must-haves. The latest songs. The best new gadgets. Let’s face it: trying to stay informed about all the ever-evolving teen trends can be exhausting! Worry not, though – Express Yourself!™ is here to help keep you “in the know”! Under-recognized for their influence in the teen trend world, books are a huge part of young people’s lives, and they have the potential to catch on like wildfire, particularly when they become movies! Think Harry Potter, Twilight, the Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars. Whether we’re driving down the highways blaring the latest tunes from inside our cars, or whether we’re sitting in our rooms rocking out to beats from our iPods, music constitutes one of teens’ most valued art forms. It’s hard to imagine what our lives would be like without the solace of music and the influence of our favorite singers. Book It! Reporter, Courtney Cheng chats with our hosts, Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez about the importance and relevance of books and music for teens. DStar of Bubble Guppies on Nick Jr, twelve year old Grace Kaufman talks about her new Amazon series, “Table 58” about a geeky group of unpopular kids who occupy the odd table in the lunchroom, made up of kids from all different cliques. Whatever trends are in or out, the Express Yourself!™ stars will keep you informed.

Guest: Grace Kaufman
Grace Kaufman is close to turning 12, she is not only an actress but also a singer and dancer. She has a wide range of talents and expresses them on the projects she works on, definitely earning her a spot to be the next big star in Hollywood. She had a great year with her work in 2014 as she starred in television shows and movies, her amazing performances left the fans wanting more. But not to worry! She’s got more in store for 2015 as she gets ready for her premier of the Amazon pilot “Table 58”. Grace’s peers can also hear her belt out tunes as the fun, bright, crazy and opinionated ‘Deema’ on the hit animated Nick Jr. series “Bubble Guppies.” The anticipated TNT series “The Last Ship” is set to air for the second season Summer 2015 on the network where Grace will portray Eric Dane’s daughter in the futurist action adventure series produced by Michael Bay. Fans of independent films will be captivated by Grace’s emotional performance in the film “Sister,” as the lead role of ‘Niki,’ a young girl whose adoptive parents are killed. Grace is one busy little girl.

Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity presents: Express Yourself Teens With the on-air Be the Star You Are!® youth reporters.

Bullying, mocking, deriding, disparaging, taunting, ridiculing, name calling describe exactly the type of social and emotional pain that many kids endure every day. The time is now to nip this negativity in the bud. Our empowered hosts, Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez interview Matt Cubbler, owner of MaxOut Strength Studio that works to create leaders by building the inner strength of its teen clients as well developing their physical strength. The hosts also interview creative writing teacher from Minnesota State, Geoff Herbach,  award winning author of the Young Adult novels, Stupid Fast, Nothing Special, I’m With Stupid, and Fat Boy vs. The Cheerleaders, all listed in the year’s best by the American Library Association, The American Booksellers Association, and many state library associations. The Gift of Giving reporter, Katelyn Darrow, talks about why it’s important to choose benevolence amid bullies and always live by the Golden Rule. Our program winds up with a stellar rendition of Taylor Swift’s song “Mean” sung by our own Be the Star You Are!® chanteuse and Back Story Reporter, Jennifer Lee. Today’s program encourages us all to choose kindness and never be a name caller. It doesn’t pay to be MEAN.

“I bet you got pushed around

Somebody made you cold

But the cycle ends right now

‘Cause you can’t lead me down that road

And you don’t know, what you don’t know…

Someday I’ll be living in a big ol’ city

And all you’re ever gonna be is mean

Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me

And all you’re ever gonna be is mean

Why you gotta be so mean?”

Express Yourself Teens talk Life Skills

unnamed

Our most formative years are between birth and the time we leave home around age 18. Young people are impressionable, soft clay ready to be molded. We heed the signposts, mentally taking note about how to navigate our world. It’s during this time that we can learn to acquire the tools, tips, and tricks needed to live a virtuous and successful life. Hosts Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez share the skills they’ve learned and how they want to embrace life as adults and interview two amazing guests. Author of Bird Face, Mississippi’s Cynthia Toney talks about her admiration for teenagers and the importance of being supportive while gleaning as much proficiency in what matters as possible. Her passion is rescuing animals. Ricky Roberts III is the author of four books, including YOU, What Really Matters. He is a youth advocate, speaker, and visionary who believes that everyone matters and deserves to know it. He is the creator of You Are Valued, a nonprofit organization that inspires youth to see the value in who they are, and appreciate the same in others. As we say at Be the Star You Are!®, “Everyone counts, especially YOU!” Learn something new every day. Having a skill set in whatever is important to you makes a difference in your quality of living. Listen at Voice America Kids Radio and Photos, descriptions, links, and listen here.
