November 21 marks the third anniversary of the internationally broadcast radio program, Express Yourself!™. Launched in 2011 on the Voice America Kids Network as an outreach service of the Moraga non profit, Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3, (www.BTSYA.org) with five local youth, the program has become a top rated program in the world on the network and now boasts thirty reporters and hosts from around the country. Steven Zhou, now studying at Pepperdine University, is thrilled to know that the efforts he began in high school as the show’s first host and administrator are still going strong. Rachel Glass, who began working with Be the Star You Are!® when she was just thirteen and was one of the original reporters, is now a journalism major in college . She credits her love of writing, researching, and broadcasting to her work on Express Yourself!™ Besides regularly hosting the show when school doesn’t interfere, Rachel is President of the National Broadcasting Society at University of Oregon. Courtney Cheng, a student at CAL Berkeley was another founding member of the team as a reporter for Book It. Courtney still hosts and reports and commented “Express Yourself!™, Be the Star You Are!® and Voice America Kids have given me the chance to expand my horizons and reach out to people. Not only do I get to speak on the radio to inspirational people about things that we’re passionate about, but I also have so much fun while doing so.”

Caiseen-Henna

A current teen host, Henna Hundal stated: “Working on Express Yourself! has honed my skills as a journalist to effectively report on a vast variety of topics. I can now not only discuss fun topics like favorite books or the latest teen trends, but I’m also able to talk about the tough issues like bullying and domestic violence. Through the show, I’ve learned how to carefully probe these tough topics by having my curiosity and inquisitiveness tempered with empathy and care.”  Asya Gonzalez, founder of She is Worth It!, is a reporter and host living in Colorado. “I have had such an amazing experience with Be The Star You Are!® They have encouraged me to reach further into my community and to do better. I am always striving to serve and show others that they too can be socially responsible. I believe that BTSYA is an EXCELLENT resource for youth and others to learn how to be socially responsible AND reach for their dreams!” A host and reporter from New Jersey, Katelyn Darrow appreciates all the love, kindness, and opportunities that being part of Express Yourself!™ has brought to her. Her charity, Angels of God, was recently profiled on the Steve Harvey Show.  Caiseen Kelley is a host, guest coordinator, and the Techy Talk reporter for the program. “This has been the opportunity of a lifetime. My sister Caie enjoyed the experience so much, that I was destined to follow suit. This is a unique chance to get unedited opinions from, for, and by youth expressed around the world. Express Yourself!™ lives up to its motto of Where teens talk and the world listens!” Caie Kelley agreed. “Being on Express Yourself!™ on Voice America Kids Radio has been such a fun, enriching experience. It is so cool that we are able to reach such a large audience discussing a huge range of topics from crazy pets to self-harm to smart decision making.”

caie & youngjoo

Born in Korea, Youngjoo Ahn served as the main host of Express Yourself!™ for almost two years. “I am so grateful to Express Yourself!™ and Voice America Kids for the wonderful opportunity that they have given me. It’s amazing to think that every week an ordinary girl can be the voice of teens around the world. Being on the radio is so much fun and I’ve been able to meet other extraordinary people who are so passionate about what they do. I would not be the same without Be the Star You Are!®, Express Yourself!™  and Voice America Kids.” In addition to these hosts, numerous other teens are reporters from various states.

BTSY

Produced by Cynthia Brian of Starstyle® Productions, llc for Be the Star You Are!® charity, the program broadcasts every Tuesday at NOON PT on the Voice America Kids Network to 132 countries with direction by Bruce Solstein and Perry Damone of Kidstar.

For a skelton’s spooktacular holiday inspiration, Express Yourself!™ gets you into the spirit of Halloween faster than you can say BOO! Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity presents:

Express Yourself Teens

With the on-air Be the Star You Are!® youth reporters.

asya 1st day of school

Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a group of small, thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Red Ribbon Week was the brainchild of the National Family Partnership in 1985 in an attempt to increase drug awareness among Americans. Today the Red Ribbon symbolizes communities mobilizing to educate youth and encourage involvement in drug prevention activities. Host Henna Hundal with Social Responsibility Reporter, Asya Gonzalez, shine the light on ways to stay drug, alcohol, and tobacco free through personal insights, scientific research, parental tips, and peer to peer pacts. Henna offers tips for teens to refrain from getting involved in risky behavior and how to be confident in the conviction to stay clean. Take the Red Ribbon Pledge now and be a part of the creation of a drug free America.

WHAT’S THE PLEDGE ABOUT?

1. As parents and citizens, we will talk to our children and the children in our lives about the dangers of drug abuse.

2. We will set clear rules for our children about not using drugs.

3. We will set a good example for our children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription.

4. We will monitor our children’s behavior and enforce appropriate consequences, so that our rules are respected.

5. We will encourage family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep children safe from substance abuse.

I PLEDGE TO SET GUIDELINES TO HELP CHILDREN GROW UP SAFE, HEALTHY AND DRUG-FREE.

No matter how old are, how big you are, or how brave you are, we all have our fears. Some fears we outgrow, but others stay with us for years — housed in the corners of our minds and the nerve endings of our bodies. Fear come in all shapes and sizes from debilitating fears dominating our daily lives to insignificant qualms that simply make us uneasy. Being scared may be rational or irrational, originating from past experiences, the anticipation of future catastrophes or mere figments of our imagination. What is fear? What makes some of us afraid and others not? To get some answers to these questions our hosts Henna Hundal and Caiseen Kelley have in depth conversations with reporters Katelyn Darrow and Asya Gonzalez. Katelyn discusses Universal Studios terrifying haunted houses, Asya reveals personal secret fears, Caissen delves into the fears surrounding technology, and Henna relates fears in the writing of her new book. Whether your fear is real, imagined, physical, or emotional, you’ll emerge a bit more courageous after listening to our talented teens converse. As Mark Twain said, “Courage is the resistance to fear, not the absence of fear.” Listen at Voice America Kids Radio and visit Express Yourself for photos, descriptions, links, and more!

Whether you are young or old, the sky is a source of wonder. The burning ball of fire that lights up our solar system, the moon that casts shadows on a calm, dark night, the heavens are majestic. People often conflate astrology and astronomy, and in today’s show, our hosts, Henna Hundal and Caiseen Kelley, explain the differences and importance of each field with the assistance of our guest astrologer.
Pandora Astrology
Jamie Kahl Miller, and aspiring astronomer, teen Shawn Honaryar. Astronomy is the scientific stuffy of stars, planets, and objects in outer space whereas Astrology is the study of how the positions of the stars and movements of the planets influence lives, events, and behaviors. Techy Talk Reporter, Caiseen, also shares the coolest apps for observing the night sky. Express Yourself!™ shoots for the stars and lands on them with this stellar show focusing on Astrology and Astronomy. Listen at Voice America Kids Radio and for photos, descriptions, links, and listen at Express Yourself Radio.

Miracle Moment®

“Let your hopes, not your hurts, shape your future. People who soar, are those who refuse to sit back and wish things would change.”

Charles R. Swindoll

Message from Founder, Cynthia Brian

Of all the forces that make for a better world, none is so powerful as hope. Hope keeps dreams alive. Hope is everything. Recently I received a letter from an incarcerated individual who had read my book, Be the Star You Are!® 99 Gifts for Living, Loving, Laughing, and Learning to Make a Difference.  Because of the true stories of portrayed in the book, he said he was filled with hope for a better tomorrow when he is released.  “But sadly”.  he wrote, “many of the other young people in prison with me are hopeless and helpless as we have no library of encouraging books. I would like to start one. Would you please consider sending copies of Be the Star You Are!® 99 Gifts for Living, Loving, Laughing, and Learning to Make a Difference?”

After I read his heart-felt letter I thought it wise to consult our volunteers to see how Be the Star You Are!® could respond. Our mission is to empower women, families, and youth through improved literacy, increased positive media, and sustainable tools for living. Unanimously the volunteers agreed that we would create a new outreach program to address this lack of empowerment and life skill books in places of incarceration. The program has been aptly named “Possibilities for Prisoners Project”. Our goal is to raise a start-up fund of $10,000 to collect, organize, and ship appropriate resources to decrease despair, increase hope, and encourage positive transformation. Following St. Francis of Assisi guidelines, we will offer light in the darkness and joy from the sadness.

We hope you will support this important campaign to give hope and strength to those who seek a life without crime. All donations are tax deductible. It’s harvest time and the crop that will yield everlasting fruit is HOPE.

Science is everywhere. From the stars that light the night sky to the intricate patterns on a butterfly’s wings, science is at play in all parts of our world and is continually making our lives so great. Hosts Henna Hundal and Courtney Chung discuss how science shapes our perspective on life from cell phones to lawn mowers, from cures for diseases to prosthetic limbs. Global Youth Talk reporter, Ryan Sim, talks about science careers in the United Nations, and how this international community is looking at science innovation to create solutions for the next generation. Special guest Dr. Jonathan Eisen,a Full Professor at the University of California, Davis, with appointments in the UC Davis Genome Center, the School of Medicine, and the College of Biological Sciences focuses on communities of microbes and how they provide new functions – to each other or to a host. Dr. Eisen is entertaining with his study systems of boiling acid pools, surface ocean waters, agents of many diseases, and the microbial ecosystems in and on plants and animals. In Health with Henna, Henna Hundal reports on how we can prevent the negative effects of prolonged sitting. It’s important to take those “stretch breaks” every hour.
