The Recipe: A Culinary Story of Hope, Wisdom and Redemption – With John David Man

It was a delight to talk with John in a recent episode of my radio show, Uplift Your Life: Nourishment of the Spirit. He spoke beautifully about the ideas in The Recipe, which he co-authored with Chef Charles Carroll. Their book is so powerful that there will soon be a movie about it. I look forward to seeing it. John began our conversation by building on the ideas I presented in the beginning part of the show by saying people in the United States are losing our civility and brotherhood. The good news is that we do have the ability to transform what is happening in our nation into love. He encouraged everyone to call their elected representatives and voice their opinion. These ideas are very much in keeping with the rules for living presented in The Recipe. To share a few quotes: “Make the world a better place with everything you do;” “Live with honor: treat every person with respect, and never forget who you’re serving;” and “Compose your life: put your effort into controlling the sail, not the wind.” John also shared some wisdom he has gleaned in his own life: have fun; remember, like billiards, what you do impacts other people; and you have a choice as to how you respond even when it is something emotional. He suggests that we stop, take a breath and be larger than the emotion. Through mindfulness, he taught himself to be kind instead of angry. In his current marriage, he follows one of the chef’s rules of the kitchen, “Pay attention to the little things” and brings his wife a cup of tea every morning. And that’s how you spread love. Everything matters. To listen to this show, I encourage you to click here.

Dr. Paula’s Tip of the Week

My Tip from my e-book, 33 Tips for Self-Empowerment is: “Discover Your Creativity. You can reconnect with your Higher Self by discovering what form of creativity gives you joy. Explore writing, dance, music and art. Create just for your own pleasure, self-expression and self-discovery. If you are concerned about people criticizing you, keep your creative explorations to yourself.” Owen, the young boy in The Recipe, accidentally stumbles upon his creative gift; or if you’re looking at it from a spiritual perspective, he was guided to the Chef who helped change his life. As the story unfolds, we learn the source of his gift. The creative expression of his soul helps Owen heal and find purpose, meaning and joy, which is exactly what it can do for all of us.

Dr. Paula’s Silver Lining Story

Recently in my Facebook posts, I have been more outspoken about my concerns over the inhumane treatment of people seeking asylum in the United States, the eroding of civil rights for all US citizens, the disrespect for our environment and animals, and the increasing threat of nuclear war. Many of my posts have been merely to share facts. So many laws are being repealed and so many governmental actions taken that a lot of it is not being reported. When people ask why I’m sharing this information, I say: we must know the truth of what is happening in our own country. Ignorance is not acceptable. We can’t form an opinion if we don’t have the facts. I want to make sure everyone has the facts. Unfortunately we are being distracted by our president’s tweets, arguments and chaos so that people are not getting all of the information. Even if they’re trying, it’s hard to know what is made up. I even heard one program with several journalists discussing whether our president was intentionally lying to us or just didn’t know the truth. That such a question is even being asked is disturbing and reminiscent of Watergate and the impeachment of Richard Nixon. As a result of my new posts, I’ve had some people writing vicious comments about me and what I’m sharing. I responded by saying: “Because of his abusive posts, I blocked Robert from my page and also deleted most of his comments since they were so offensive and angry. I believe in open communication in a civil and respectful manner. When people violate those boundaries, I delete their posts and block them from my page. I do this for all of us who want Facebook to be a safe place to communicate.” My silver lining came in the form of a number of people who thanked me, liked my comment and shared it. One person wrote: “Thank you for being such an example of a kind person with strong boundaries.” This shows me people are getting tired of the verbal violence. We can’t all agree, but we can treat others the way we wish to be treated. We can be civil and communicate with respect and a willingness to hear and be heard.

Marian Stephens’ Story

This week’s episode of Uplift Your Life: Nourishment of the Spirit featured John David Mann, and he was a font of wisdom and inspiration. His book is a beautiful story that is really a handbook on how to live. Dr. Paula asks listeners how they can turn their anger and frustration into righteous indignation. This is a powerful tool that I am using, and I am beginning to feel my anger dissipate and vanish. I was experiencing an overwhelming bout of anger towards my oldest son, and it came to me that I am just shouting into a void; my anger and words are vanishing into the ether unresolved. I realize what I am grappling with is the loss of my relationship with my son, the loss of my vision and expectations of what motherhood was going to be, and the loss of my dream of who I would be at age 42. How do I come to terms with this? Mr. Mann’s book focuses on how to deal with loss and the anger one feels when trying to do so. Having a mentor is key and finding how to be that mentor for yourself. I am lucky that Dr. Paula is my mentor, and she is teaching me how to be my own. I will turn my anger into righteous indignation by focusing energy on healing myself and taking back control of my life. I am indignant that I have encountered abuse and disease, and I will no longer accept this to be my reality.

John David Mann says that we can transform our nation into a place of love and greatness.  When I heard Mr. Mann say, “loss is a beginning not an ending”, it is the first time I truly believed that this place in life is a place to start. He says that who we are is shaped by the things that happen to us and the things that are happening around us. I have experienced traumatic events and illness that have changed my circumstances significantly. I am using these happenings as a springboard to become more resilient, courageous, and creative. My default emotional state is becoming calm and strong.

John David Mann says everything you do reveals everything you are. If you pay attention to and are purposeful with the little things in life, you will bring about huge change. My husband is so skilled at doing this – he makes our bed every day, keeps our home neat and pleasing, and helps me stay organized. This inspires me to pay careful attention to the smaller details, too, which helps me confront the larger problems I face with bravery and a calm mind and heart. Mr. Mann says that making little gestures and taking time to discover new things about your partner everyday will help prevent entropy from taking hold of your relationship. My husband and I focus our energy on doing this daily, and I am grateful to hear that we are on the right track.

John David Mann speaks beautifully about relationships and how to have productive disagreements. Simply take a deep breath and make a choice when confronting opposition that is not anger based. My life coaching sessions with Dr. Paula are teaching me how to do exactly this. I am finding the wherewithal to take a breath and let my often momentary anger and frustration disperse before speaking or engaging in an argument. This episode reinforces the fact that we have no control over the people and events that surround us, but we do have complete control over how we handle ourselves. I have believed this to be true for some time, but I am now putting it into practice constantly, and it is improving everything.

Dr. Paula’s Coaching Response

Marian, I can tell how deeply John’s ideas resonated with you. He clearly has chosen to take his life in his own hands, make deep changes, learn how to create a loving and harmonious relationship, and live a life of meaning and joy. When someone makes that kind of commitment, they become a shining example.

We are all here on the earth plane to learn and grow. Some of us have harder lessons than others in this incarnation. I find comfort in my belief that I chose this path before I came to earth. When I accept responsibility for my choices, not blame, but responsibility, it changes everything because if I’m responsible for my responses to what has happened to me, I also have the ability to make new choices and change the quality of my life. I applaud you for taking responsibility and choosing to grow and heal.

I want to remind you of the 2 mantras/affirmations that I use every day to help me through the difficult times and to bring more love and peace into my day:

  • I say these 2 sentences for 3 minutes silently over and over again every morning:

I am love as I am loved.

All is love as all is loved.

  • I say this one over and over again for as long as I need it at any time of the day or night:

Peace in my mind

Peace in my body

Peace in my spirit

Peace in my soul

Greek Mythology Provides Insight, Wisdom and Guidance – With Ellen Tadd

6792-004-C757C6D7.jpg

In a recent episode from my radio show, Uplift Your Life: Nourishment of the Spirit, my guest, Clairvoyant Ellen Tadd shared the beautiful experience she had as she went into labor with her son. He came to her to see if she was alright. Then Ellen saw a bright white light enter into her abdomen, which was confirmation of what so many of us already know—we all come from the spiritual realm. She shared her understanding that happiness is not about getting what you want. It’s about bringing your best self to the situation. We are here on earth to fulfill our spiritual nature, and we have two main tools to help us do so. The first is deep listening or meditation and the second is deep looking with our 3rd eye, also known as the Tadd Technique. Ellen was so generous with the wisdom and knowledge she shared, even walking us through the Tadd Technique and her special meditation process. As she pointed out, most methods of meditation are actually relaxation exercises. Ellen’s meditation process gives you direct connection with the spiritual world and opens the crown chakra for expansion, happiness, inspiration, and trust. Dr. Paula’s Tip of the Week

My Tip from my e-book, 33 Tips for Self-Empowerment is: Create a Positive Mood. Change your mood by changing your behavior: shower, go for a walk or open the curtains. Then do something you enjoy. Doing something different helps you shift your energy and your focus. Just the physical act of moving can help you move from one state of mind to another. Sometimes our mind gets stuck in a groove and we need to take an action to shift our attention, shift our focus, and shift our attitude. The mind can grab onto something and keep repeating it and even expanding it until something small and inconsequential gets blown out of proportion and begins to feel overwhelming. We don’t have to allow this to happen. We have the choice to gain control of our thoughts or feelings, refocus our attention and shift our mood. When we do this, we can prevent ourselves from moving into fear and anxiety and even create feelings of joy. If we are out with other people and start to feel overwhelmed by the negativity in the conversation, we still have a choice. We can go to the restroom for an escape or attempt to change the topic or the direction of the conversation, and if nothing is helping, we can choose to leave in a way that doesn’t insult anyone, but allows us to be in charge of our own well-being. It can be as simple as saying, “I’m tired and need to leave now. I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening.” Especially in this time of increasing fears and discord, we must continue to find ways to keep our attitude positive and not add to the chaos in the world.

Dr. Paula’s Silver Lining Story

Now for my silver lining stories. I’ve worked hard to learn to focus on what is important to me in the moment and not allow myself to be distracted by the noises and demands of my surroundings. So when I was meditating and my cell phone signaled me that I had a text, my first thought was to ignore it until I was finished. On most days, this is not a problem, but on this particular day, I felt drawn to look at my phone. When I followed this pull, I was grateful. It was a message from my daughter asking if I was awake. It was highly unusual for me to get this message on a workday morning, so I responded yes and received a special treat. She had taken the day off work and was home with her 10 month old son. I had some delightful facetime with them as he was crawling around, pulling up, smiling and making happy sounds playing with his blocks and turning the pages of his cardboard book. Had I delayed my response to her until after my meditation, I would have missed this joy because he would have been down for his nap. Yes, boundaries are important. It’s also important to know when to trust the messages I’m receiving. Following my intuition was my silver lining.

Marian Stephens’ Story

This week’s episode of Uplift Your Life: Nourishment of the spirit with Ellen Tadd featuring her new book The Infinite View was captivating. Ellen Tadd is a clairvoyant, and her first clairvoyant experience was when her mother’s spirit came back to talk to her. Her mother had a severe case of multiple sclerosis and relayed that her life on Earth was to understand the suffering people endure and learn compassion. One part of my healing journey has been to try to understand why I chose this body for my time on Earth. As I understand it, until I learn and understand this lesson, it will continue to manifest. Some symptoms have improved, and I think that it’s because I realized that I have the power to heal my body simply by getting in touch with my spirit using spiritual practices. Perhaps part of my purpose is to share this journey with those who would learn from it, which I am beginning to do. Dr. Paula’s tip of the week is to create a positive mood. I have been doing this since I heard those words, and it’s a powerful tool that is simple to use. I’ve just turned on music, adjusted lighting, gone on short walks, or taken a moment to redirect negative thoughts. The outcome is I feel much calmer, and my house is calm.

Since I have begun listening to the show, my life has drastically improved. To continue and deepen healing my mind, body, and spirit, I asked Dr. Paula for further help by having life coaching sessions with her. The situation with my oldest son became explosive and angry and overwhelming, so he is staying with his father. I am faced with so many difficult decisions right now that it’s a little scary. After my first session with Dr. Paula, I left with a sense of clarity that I have never had before. No matter which path I take, it will be hard. But, using what I learn from these sessions will be key to making the best choices for myself and my family.

Dr. Paula asked her listeners what you can do to prevent becoming overwhelmed by your emotions. This is probably the thing I am struggling with the most. I have never been one to cry and working through all the trauma that I have been through is bringing about a very strong emotional response. I wish I could cry at the appropriate time – in therapy or when I am having a quiet moment alone, but that is not the way it’s working. I got extremely upset in the middle of the night two days ago and cried the rest of the night. I feel much better because I must get rid of the negative emotions and deal with the sense of loss that I feel, the loss of what I thought motherhood would be. I just want to figure out how to do this without keeping my husband awake all night!

Dr. Paula’s Coaching Response

There really is no right time to cry. Tears come when they’re ready, and it isn’t always at a convenient time. This is especially true when we are not used to allowing ourselves to feel deep pain and to let it go. Sometimes we do get overwhelmed in the middle of the night or when watching a movie or having a private thought in the middle of dinner. The tears actually have a chemical in them that helps us heal. So they are good us. The problem is that society has taught us not to cry in public or when others are around because it’s a sign of weakness. In truth, it’s a sign of strength. Being strong enough to be vulnerable is a good thing and we should model it for our children. Until we’re comfortable enough to do that, we can always excuse ourselves and go to the bathroom or outside for a walk where we can shed our tears privately. When you have a lot of unexpressed tears stored up, it takes time to release them all. Just like there is no right time to cry, there is no right amount of tears to cry or length of time that it takes to cry them all. Just know that it will be done when it’s done. It can feel as if you’ve cried more tears than are possible for any one person to shed. When you feel this way, remind yourself that the tears are releasing the pain, which is far better than allowing yourself to continue to keep the pain inside where it is doing damage to your physical, mental and emotional well-being. It’s a better choice to cry and heal.

How You & Your Child Can Thrive Through Personal Style by Hemda Mizrahi

How can you present a true, clear message about who you are, both at home and at work? Personal Style Coach Allison Hamilton-Rohe reveals her formula during a guest appearance on my Internet radio show, “Turn the Page”

Our dialogue about launching you on your style journey continued after the show, when Allison offered an example of powerful personal style: “Look at the amazing Duchess of Windsor, whose husband literally gave up his kingdom and chose exile over life without her. While she was not a “classic” beauty, her charisma and appeal were undeniable — especially for her King!” This is one of the ways that personal style is distinct from fashion. The common personal style thread across your lifetime is YOU, what flatters and matters to you most, what you aspire to be and do.

Once you experience how the language of style can move you past image anxiety and into a more fulfilling reality, you’ll appreciate the benefits of discovering it earlier in life. Hopefully, this will motivate you to pass the learning onto younger generations, including your children and grandchildren.

Allison references Carol Dweck’s book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success,” in identifying ways you can support your child in achieving a positive self-image. Dr. Dweck’s research indicates that 40% of your happiness is a product of how you see yourself, and the corresponding choices you make.

As a parent or guardian, how can you help your youngster to look and feel good? These are strategies that Allison’s own kids have embraced:

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE.
The number one thing you want to encourage, instill and empower your children to feel towards themselves, their bodies AND their style is love. You can do this any number of ways!

GIVE CONFIDENCE-BOOSTING COMPLIMENTS.
Dr. Dweck suggests offering process rather than person praise. This involves acknowledging repeatable behaviors that can reinforce a praiseworthy character trait, skill, action, or outcome. For example, rather than saying “you look pretty,” be specific about what you appreciate: “I love how those barrettes bring out the sky blue color of your eyes.”  A statement like this encourages your child to feel proud about doing something well. In contrast, “person praise” can create self-doubt when something goes awry, like the physical changes and emotional reactions that might occur at the onset of puberty!

INSIST ON LOVE.
When you’re shopping with your children or going through their wardrobes, only buy/keep things they love.  If they need a new coat, find a coat they love.  If you have a sense of their style and size, shop online with them.  You might select a few items and then ask them to look at the order before making the purchase. Ask them one question only: “Do you love what I’ve picked out for you?” If they say no, delete it. No exceptions. This sets a precedent that style is something that feels good and they can enjoy.

MAINTAIN STANDARDS.
It’s okay to insist that your children brush their hair and teeth, clean their bodies, and wear clothes that aren’t ripped. This is basic grooming. It’s important to teach your children these habits early on so they’re prepared when the time comes for them to “dress to impress.” It may take energy and patience, and consistent practice works.

Allison shares a personal illustration: “I posted a picture checklist by my kids’ door that I ask them to check everyday. They receive a star each time they complete their list. When they master a skill, I give them a bonus and we celebrate. Now, if I notice they forgot to brush their hair, all I have to say is, “Checklist?” and they go, “Oh!  Whoops!” and run back upstairs.” This tactic can be adapted to the specifics of your household. If you have a special needs child, creating a visual map of the checklist and breaking down tasks can be helpful. Teaching basic self-care is deeply important to preparing a child to be an independent adult.

ALLOW FOR PLAY.
If you’re dressing up for a party and your child is dying to wear a dress that’s a bit over-the-top, or put on lipstick, don’t sweat it.  If your kid puts on a shirt and pants that don’t match well and he’s three, let it go! If your son wears pink or your daughter wears combat boots, offer the freedom of experimentation. Allison reflects on rejoicing in her daughter’s self-expression: “I bought my daughter a button that read, “I dressed myself today. I loved posting her wacky outfits on Facebook.” Style can be fun and it allows kids to play with who they want to be. Allow your kids to enjoy it!

ENCOURAGE SELF-EXPRESSION.
Your kid is going to be who she is. If you do your job well, she’ll value her unique qualities and use them to propel her purpose in the world. If your kids settle into a style that unsettles you, have a conversation about the power of style and what it means for first impressions.  Allow your children to be in control of the message, and check in to ensure it’s the message they truly want to send. If not, work with them to change it. If your son loves his style and it STILL unsettles you, enlist a family therapist to address the underlying issues both for you and your child.

Identifying with any of these strategies as ones you’d like to adopt for yourself? Go for it!  Your example is the best guide for your children. If you’re kind to yourself, insist on love, maintain standards, allow yourself to play, and encourage your own self-expression through style, they will, too!

If you need expert guidance along the way, contact Allison through www.dailyoutfit.com. Mention this blog in booking a session on the “Work With Me” page of her site, and read on through her free newsletter and blog posts, including this one on “back-to-school” shopping sprees: http://www.dailyoutfit.com/2014/08/top-10-tips-to-make-back-to-school.html

This week’s episode, Thriving in the 21st Century on Holy Hormones Honey! airs  October 24th LIVE at 9 am Pacific.  Catch this episode and others on demand every day here!

Are we going to thrive – or just survive? Join Life Coach, Angela Bussio, creator of the “The Science of Attracting Joy™, and “Design My Destiny© on October 24 to find out how you can break out of survival mode and into a thriving, successful life.

At a young age, Angela discovered the principles or “rhythm” of creating the life that you desire.  Her life has been an experiment of both the effective and ineffective uses of the universal laws that govern our personal experience of reality.

After experiencing an almost magical era using these principles in her young adult life, Angela manifested an incredible man, and married him.  Over time, she forgot these early patterns.  This change of rhythm and focus created an extremely negative period in her life, while she was busy raising five children. Ultimately, at the height of a very stressful period she experienced a complete breakdown. Remembering her earlier experiences led her on a new quest to create a joyful life.

Guest Bio

At the age of 45, Angela graduated with a B.S. in Psychology. To her dismay, she found the practical applications of traditional psychology and use of psych medications were only effective in quelling only some of the most acute symptoms.

Angela began a journey for healing that led her to read almost 100 books and experience as many programs. This passionate, determined quest led her to the discovery of a new genre of psychology called “Energy Psychology.” It was the through the application of several of these techniques- that she was able to completely heal.

Angela became certified on a master level. She started a life coaching practice using these techniques in conjunction with her knowledge of brain and body processes and the powerful laws of Newtonian and Quantum physics to assist those who were suffering. She helped them learn to heal and re-create their lives.

Angela appears as a Life Coach on a local morning television show, and conducts addiction group workshops.
