I am a better person now than I was 6 years ago, and better still than I was eight or twelve years ago, and I don’t want to even mention sixteen years ago. But at each of those points in time, I was happy, and doing what I thought was the right thing. I made a few good choices that led me down a happier path, and I’m better off, as well as a better person, because of those choices. The trick is that, every day, we have those choices. If you make good, fundamental choices every day, you will see positive effects in your life. Here are a few of the key choices I make.

1. Build Great Relationships
I want to have the best relationship I can possibly have with my family, friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. If you have that loving, caring consistency with your spouse or significant other, children, parents, and any other family, you will have a strong chance of having great relationships with everyone you come in contact with. For my spouse, I write what I call “Ambush Notes” and slip them in her lunch box or leave them hidden in the newspaper, or somewhere where she will find it. It costs nothing, means a lot and she has kept them all over the years. If we can do nice things we can be a better person, and it carries over to all of our friendships, try doing something small, a compliment, a hug or just notice a little thing and say something. Good perpetuates good.

2. Build Structure Into Your Life
With the busy-ness of our 21st century, will all need to give to ourselves more of the quality of life tools that can make us improve our own self-esteem. Make it a priority to give to yourself the time you deserve as a reward for all of your hard work, anything you enjoy doing, and do it daily. Don’t let busy-ness steal your personal time; busy-ness will drag you down. Whether it’s 10 minutes of stretching and walking, or 15 minutes of reading, or 20 minutes of meditation, the point is that it must be a gift you give yourself. Before you can share love with others you must love yourself first.

3. Create A Vision
If you had a magic wand, what would you create with it? Planting the seed of improvement, or dreaming of that goal that you have in your mind is hugely important to our future successes. If you can imagine it then you can achieve it; that may sound far-fetched, but take it from a guy who is living the dream, if you can’t see it, you will never achieve it.

4. Positive Mental Attitude
I truly believe that the law of attraction is a viable force in our universe. If you carry yourself with the feeling that life is a beautiful, and that we are the capable of achieving our dreams, then a positive attitude will draw those dreams to you (even if you merely convince yourself to make the necessary changes, then that is the mystical force driving the attraction). Be willing to build on all of the positives in your life, take this from the guy who did spend many years in the dark hole of alcohol and substance abuse, living with an upbeat demeanor will spill over into all that you come in contact with, and that it is completely possible without the temporary feelings delivered by drugs and alcohol. Practice gratitude thoughts and appreciate your positives. Do not diminish the small inconsequential normalcies of life.

5. Give To Others
In today’s society we are in need of all of the knowledge and assistance that people can donate and deliver. Take your special skill set and share it with another person, be a good listener, mentor others and share your abilities with groups in need. By becoming engaged you will reap such rewards that you will be amazed at how it can not only impact the lives of others but impact your own as well. Part of improving my life has been through finding what I am good at and sharing it. Which is why I love doing the talk show so much: it is a verbal outlet to helping many, bringing knowledgeable people together to share the goodness of life. I call it the “Refirement Zone” for a reason, igniting our lives takes thinking about what we truly want, by giving back we do.

peace,

Graduate Level Grief

Family

I made a commitment to writing regularly in my blog. I really committed. I thought about what I would say each week over the months, how I would say it, what was meaningful to me, what would be meaningful to the people who read my blog. I made lists, plans, created visions. I was all set… except then I didn’t do it.

Yes, I’m very busy with my radio show, Good Grief, with my family and my work as a grief counselor. Yes, I’m still absolutely committed to time when I’m not working; to singing, creating, and just plain goofing off. But I didn’t think any of that explained why I wasn’t writing. All those things have failed to prevent me from doing many other things these past few months that I didn’t seem to have time for.

I lived with the question for a solid week or two. Why am I not writing my blog? What is in the way? Then I ticked off possible explanations. “I’m procrastinating.” Hmmm… Unlike many other periods in my life, procrastination hardly even qualifies as a part of my personality right now. “I’m uninspired.” Definitely not. I’m inspired beyond my wildest dreams by amazing people I get to meet and talk with every day, by the guests on the radio show and the meaningful conversations I get to have, and by my community and family. “I don’t want to write.” Wrong! I love to write and I’m writing other things all the time with great relish.

When the answer hit me over the head, I almost laughed out loud. I was not writing my grief blog because I was experiencing that time after a new loss when I just don’t want to share. I need time to absorb the new reality, to adjust to the changing picture of what I imagined the future to be. I need time to (wait for it) process.

I had not really written since I found out my mother has pancreatic cancer.

When it finally dawned on me that I was simply practicing what I preach and listening to what my own heart told me I needed, I relaxed. And then, respecting that my mother is busy adjusting too, I asked her if she would be ok with me writing about this newest wrinkle in the fabric of my life. “Everyone knows anyway,” she said, bestowing a blessing on whatever I might say about it. (Thanks mom).

So here’s what I want to say. Cancer stinks. I hate the endless doctors appointments and project management, getting all the pieces to work together. I hate waiting in endless waiting rooms with other people who also don’t have the energy to wait for anything. I hate anticipating losing my mother, who I love, in the very foreseeable future. I hate unexpectedly crying in public when there is nothing at all sad going on. I hate that I know how to do all this so well because I’ve done it before for years at a time without a prayer of changing the eventual outcome. I hate that no one has cured cancer yet, including my brilliant son-in-law, a cancer researcher who I honestly think has a chance of it.

But all of this is really so very small. What I love, even now, is so much bigger. I love my mother, who was clear right away that if they offer her 6 months of chemo for 6 months of time, it’s not worth it. I love the conversations we’re having in which we can share our love for one another in a way that is more immediate, and deeper than it was six months ago. I love that the doctors who are caring for my mother ask her about herself as a person before they talk about treatment and, when they run late for her appointment, apologize. (Thank you, Dr. Tempero and her staff). I love that I have all that experience to offer my mother, to ease her burden and help her feel supported and nourished. I love all the hearts on her Caring Bridge page. I love being so deeply in touch, every day, with my love for her and for everyone else in my life, knowing that having them at all is, at best, fleeting. I love pictures of her with my grandsons. I love that there is nothing in me that wants to shy away from the whole experience.

So, I guess we could call this Continuing Education, having taken what sometimes feels like the graduate level course in grief. Lifelong learning for the griever. Showing up for class. Taking notes. Putting one foot in front of the other and stepping into love, because even the hurt tells me how very much I love. How very very much.

The Orgasmic Body

The Orgasmic Body

hands

Pleasure? Orgasm? Joy? If you experienced childhood sexual abuse, these words may seem foreign. And they may even seem an impossibility. This is because during childhood sexual abuse, your body, energy and space are invaded. The experience can become too painful to tolerate. There is fear, confusion, shock, and in many cases dissociation. This is when you check out and split off your awareness from what is going on in your body. As a result you may now find yourself closed off to feeling anything: pain and pleasure.

Your body, your sexualness and your relationships are all impacted by the insidious ghost of abuse. Your abuse is still controlling you, even though it was years ago. Dissociation locks in your body all the pain and shame. You then struggle with opening up to receiving any kind of support, pleasure and intimacy. This causes great challenges in your relationships, your health, your finances and specifically your body. So what do you do to take the control back? How do you unlock your body from this pain so you can begin to enjoy being you and being in your body?

Join us for this revolutionary conversation in which we answer these
questions and more in my upcoming radio show, “Beyond Abuse, Beyond Therapy, Beyond Anything,” on June 17th @ 10am PST/1pm EST. I’ll be joined by Dr. Dain Heer, Co-Founder of Access Consciousness and author of, “Being You Changing the World.” Dain will share his own unique perspective on how he overcame his abuse and went on to experience greater pleasure, joy and the “orgasmic body.” For more information please visit my website Dr. Lisa Cooney.

Goddesses

At last, my long awaited book of education erotica for women is released!

Seven Sex Goddesses – sexual reawakening for today’s woman

Yes, six long years in the making, with the help and feedback of so many of my female clients and workshop participants, here is the book that can reawaken the awesome power and beauty of your female sexuality (or your partner’s)! You’ll meet the Lady, the Amazon, the Bawd, the Madonna, the Seductress, the Maestra and the Earth Gypsy – and come to feel the fundamental psychic energies they represent.

By drawing on their energetic expression, you can become more sexually confident and expressive and have more sexual desire and greater sexual response!  Each Goddess is accompanied by a fictional, historical erotic story to convey the feeling of these energies in a way that is accessible for you as a modern-day woman. Then through 24 illustrative stories you’ll also follow the experiences of three fictional modern women as they experience the energy of each Goddess in their lives.

I call it educational erotica – written to educate and inspire! As far as I’m aware, no other book like this has ever been written. I’m really proud of this book, and I don’t say that easily. I’m so pleased and excited that this book and the inspiration and enlightenment it contains can now enter widely into the world! It’s available exclusively from my website. Click here to purchase your copy now!

The Art of Listening with Ariel & Shya Kane

Deer

“True listening is actively listening to another with the intention of hearing what is being said from the other’s point of view.” – Ariel & Shya Kane

This month, we are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and our lives are truly wonderful! One of the biggest keys in keeping our relationship vibrant, loving and alive is listening. When you truly listen to another, it pulls you into the moment. And the moment is magic.

Experiencing sweetness, ease and fulfillment in all of your relationships, is a real possibility. We’ll explore this at our September 15th special event in NYC, Kisses Are Sweeter Than Whine, and our Art of Listening weekend seminar in NYC September 19th – 21st. Our friend Menna van Praag is also coming to town to lead a seminar on Writing Made Easy!

Life Is A Date
An excerpt from How to Have A Match Made in Heaven: A Transformational
Approach to Dating, Relating and Marriage

If you’re dating or contemplating dating again, you may be reading this section with the desire to glean tips that will help you with that process. If you’ve been married for years, you may be skimming through this section to get on to the information that applies to you. You may erroneously think that you’re “beyond the dating stage” and may be rushing forward to find the marriage parts. But dating itself is a key building block for any relationship or marriage. In fact, when a couple gets into trouble, they have often forgotten to woo each other. They have forgotten how to date. It’s easy to forget when there are bills to be paid and children to be fed or when you’re busy trying to make your relationship “go somewhere.”

The two of us are on a succession of dates. They have already lasted 30 years and we expect a lifetime of them. Sometimes we stop what we’re doing when one or the other of us will say, “Want to take a date with me out to the mailbox?” Then we slip on our shoes and go out our front door. The screen door makes a creaking salute, and we often hold hands as we head out into our driveway, our feet crunching on the gravel. It’s a time to feel the air and smell the greenery and see the sun slanting through the trees. Or perhaps it’s a time to slide over the snow and watch the bare branches clatter in the wind. But it’s always a time just for us. Getting the mail is an excuse to be together.

Of course we don’t actually need an excuse since we live and work together, but we make one anyway. We have dates while doing the dishes and others while making a trip to the grocery store. We have a library date when we go together to pick out books on CD to listen to during the hour-long ride to New York City where we work. And occasionally over the years, we’ve even had a date in the emergency room as one or the other of us needed medical attention. It’s all an intimate adventure if you’re there for it.

Busting Tantra Myths by Jacqueline Hellyer

T.LoungeThe Tantric Lounge is back for its second season, sponsored by the fabulous folk at Lelo, the world’s leading designer brand for intimate products.  The Tantric Lounge remains a sleaze-free zone, devoted to beauty and meaning in sex, love and intimacy – this is where sex is an art and sex is a science.

But it’s not just about sex, at least, not just about what so many people think Tantric sex is about. So in this episode Jacqueline Hellyer and her co-host Xavier Waterkeyn are doing some Tantric myth-busting!

Is Tantra some weird hippie practice that involves hours of sex and kinky orgies?

Or is it an approach to living, a way of being in the world that encompasses sexuality rather than marginalizing it or trying to ‘transcend’ it?

Find out  at The Tantric Lounge, on Voice America’s Empowerment Channel.
