Keeping Love Alive through Alzheimer’s By Dr. Paula joyce

Dr. Gary Chapman—author, speaker, pastor, and counselor—has a passion for people and for helping them build lasting relationships. He is an internationally recognized marriage counselor and the author of The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts, which has been translated into 50 languages and has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. Now, Dr. Chapman has teamed up with health education specialist Deborah Barr, and physician and mental health counselor Edward Shaw, MD to write Keeping Love Alive as Memories Fade: The 5 Love Languages and the Alzheimer’s Journey. The book offers an innovative new application of the five love languages as tools that can help us sustain an emotional relationship with a parent or partner with Alzheimer’s. There’s a touching scene between a son and his aging mother in the new movie, Collateral Beauty. She starts a conversation that lacks a basis in current reality. Her son does something I’ve never seen before. Instead of trying to bring her back to his reality, he joins her fantasy world and keeps their connection alive with his open loving heart. He took what could have been a frustrating and potentially anger-filled interaction and made it into a joyful one. Alzheimer’s is a growing problem. Forty-seven million people worldwide are afflicted with the disease. It takes an enormous toll on the care-givers, who are usually the spouses or children. Most cannot afford private care and do not have access to paid social services. The result is that 40% of care-givers fall into a clinical depression. The positive feelings from a loving act reduce the patient’s agitation, which lightens the caregiver’s burden. Please join us Thursday to learn how to share love in a way that benefits everyone.

A Legacy of Love

It is that time of year again…the season that brings joy with the lighting of the tree, the anticipation of Santa, drinking hot chocolate by the fire and for my girls and I, pulling out the box of treasured Christmas ornaments that my mom made us over the years. She has been gone for 2 years now and as we carefully unwrap each ornament she lovingly made we reflect on the memory it brings. It has become one of our most favorite events as we decorate the tree each year. The delicately painted reindeer adorned in silly hats with all our names on it makes us think of the endless rounds of tickling she engaged in just to bring more laughter into our lives. The shells with glitter bring memories of the many walks we shared on the beach collecting shells. The glass balls filled with ribbon represent her style and grace. And, then there are the ones she made while undergoing endless rounds of chemo which remind us of her bravery and courage as she fought cancer with such strength and determination. My girls are 9, 7 and 6 and even at their young age, they understand what a legacy means and they have such fond memories of their grandmother who is now their guardian angel.

This yearly occurrence enables her memory to stay alive as if she were sitting across the table from us engaged in a conversation listening to our every word. As we take time away from our busy lives and come together engaged in a Christmas tradition we are able to reflect on the beautiful memories she created and the selfless love she gave us all. I know many of you are missing a loved one also this holiday season and I hope this story will inspire you to find a tradition in which you can reflect on a legacy of someone not forgotten in your own life. Celebrate the many blessings this person brought to your life and reflect on the good times you shared. He or she would not want you to be sad and cultivating a ritual in their honor will fill your heart with love. May this holiday season bring you all a deep sense of peace and joy.

Taking Charge of Your Thoughts

pastlifer

My silver lining story this week is about my own journey through releasing negative thoughts and memories. The other night I was doing a 10 minute gratitude meditation, focusing on all of the things in my life that I am grateful for. Suddenly I was interrupted with a visual image of a character in a movie who was emotionally abusive. The image was so strong and persistent that I couldn’t focus on what I wanted to, which was the things that I am grateful for. I realized that this character represented my ex, who had been emotionally abusive to me. What I know now is that abusers drain your energy and your time, making it difficult, if not impossible, for you to accomplish your own goals. I was not going to let this image or any abuser destroy my meditation. So I used the techniques that I’ve shared with you to get rid of this destructive image. I threw the image into a purple flame. It was persistent. So I upped my game. I used the chant we do at the beginning of the show 3 times, om a ha a om am am. Finally, I said thank you several times until the image finally disappeared and I could think about gratitude. I was determined not to let an abuser destroy any more of my energy or my joy in life. I am stronger than any negative thought or memory, and the past will no longer hold power over me.

Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens.

Henna Hundal 2asya 1st day of school

Building a beautiful life is all about building amazing memories. Memories are treasures. They’re moments of time that we tuck away safely in a little pocket of our hearts. Hosts Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez spend three segments sharing the importance of remembering as they examine how to use memories as sweet reminders of the journey traversed through life. Art Attack reporter, Brigitte Jia brings her unique artistry to the conversation by illustrating how works of art are used to communicate the most ephemeral moments, fleeting snapshots frozen forever. Remembrance isn’t about fame. Remembrance is about connecting with the people around you. Live life fully, spreading love, creating memories. You might not be a household name, but celebrated Grandpa Joe gets as much love at the dinner table as Leonardo Da Vinci, if not more. Be a memory architect!
