#1 Universally recognized as the greatest physician of all time, Albert Einstein developed the theory of relatively. His ground-breaking discoveries and theories have not just widely influenced modern physics and cosmology, but the born leaders in us all.

Albert Einstein’s leadership quotes are the most searched for above all others in the world. Regardless of your background, culture, knowledge or values, Einstein’s influence has no limits. His leadership quote below is one in particular that we can take great inspiration from when faced with a complex challenge:

“The leader is one who, out of the clutter, brings simplicity… Out of discord, harmony… And out of difficult, opportunity.”

#2. In second place is former South African president Nelson Mandela.

He achieved many great things during his life, but his most well-known is successfully leading the resistance to South Africa’s policy of apartheid in the 20th century, during which he was infamously imprisoned at Robben Island. One quote that truly inspires us when talking about leading teams is:

“If you want the cooperation of humans around you, you must make them feel they are important – and you do that by being genuine and humble.”

#3. In third we find Guatama Buddha, revered as the founder of the religion Buddhism. As a philosopher, meditator and spiritual teacher who lived in ancient India, he still inspires millions of people around the globe, regardless of creed, culture, or religion.

Perhaps this quote is one in which we can find true value, harmony, mindfulness and peace – necessary factors in becoming a better leader:

“Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.”

Methodology

We started by sourcing a list of the most inspirational leaders from analyzing the number of monthly Google searches for “leadership quotes” firstly, and “quotes” second in each country in the world, using data from ahrefs keyword planner.

We then ranked the top 126 most searched “leaders + quotes” based on the number of searches and the number of times they appeared in 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each country, using a unique scoring index to give each a combined total score.

When looking at UK and US lists, we sourced the most inspirational leaders using ahrefs keyword planner and combined search volumes of {name/surname} + {“leadership quotes”/”quotes”}

*Some keywords/leaders were removed or not considered as they were deemed inappropriate or inaccurate to the intent of the research.

*Not all countries were included, due to null data.

Vertical Development: Elevating Your Leadership

This blog is provided by Ryan Gottfredson, Assistant Professor of Leadership at California State University-Fullerton, author of Success Mindsets and a Mindset Consultant/Trainer/Speaker.  It is a companion to his interview on Innovating Leadership, Co-creating Our Future titled Success Mindsets: Your Keys to Unlocking Greater Success in Your Life that aired on Tuesday, December 15th, 2020.

There are two types of development leaders can go through: horizontal development and vertical development.

Horizontal development involves helping leaders add more knowledge, skills, and competencies. The focus of horizontal development is on helping leaders to DO more.

It is not unlike adding a new app to an iPad, making it more capable of performing more functions

Vertical development involves helping leaders elevate their thinking capacity to better navigate more complex and uncertain environments. The focus of vertical development is on helping leaders to BE more able.

Instead of adding a new app to an iPad, vertical development is upgrading the iPad to a newer, more capable model

Question: Of these two forms of development, which is most commonly focused on for leadership development?

The vast majority of leadership development focuses exclusively on horizontal development. Very little leadership development focuses on vertical development.

Why is Vertical Development So Important for Leaders?

When two different leaders with different altitudes of vertical development encounter a situation that is low in complexity, both of these leaders are likely to navigate this effectively.

But, if those same leaders encounter a situation that is high in complexity, it is likely that only the one with greater vertical development will be able to handle this effectively.

This is critical to understand because leaders are facing increasingly facing more and more complex and uncertain circumstances, something that the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t helped with.

This hopefully demonstrates that vertical development can be a competitive advantage for individual leaders as well as for entire organizations.

Quick Vertical Development Self-Assessment

Here are questions that I have come across that might be decent revealers of leaders’ altitude of vertical development:

  • How do you respond to constructive criticism?
  • Would you be willing to let someone survey your employees about your effectiveness as a leader?
  • Is it bad to build close relationships with those you lead?
  • Can you hold competing perspectives on a controversial topic (e.g., abortion)?
  • Do you generally focus on the outcomes you want or on the drivers of the outcomes you want?
  • When something goes wrong, do you ask yourself: “Who am I being that their eyes are not shining?”

How do we help leaders vertically develop?

To improve leaders’ vertical development, we must get to the core of one’s verticality: Their mindsets.

Both psychology and neuroscience has independently identified mindsets as the foundational mechanism that governs leaders’ processing and operations. This is because our mindsets are our mental lenses that shape how we see and interpret our world, and how we see and interpret our world shapes the quality of our thinking, learning, and behavior.

Fortunately, there have been 30+ years on mindsets, which has led to the identification of four sets of mindsets, ranging on a continuum from less vertically developed and more vertically developed.

These mindsets come to life when we recognize the common desires that flow from these mindsets:

If you would like to assess the quality of your mindsets, I have developed a FREE personal mindset assessment, which can be taken here: https://ryangottfredson.com/personal-mindset-assessment

To Summarize…

Most leadership development focuses on horizontal development, but because of the increasing complexity and uncertainty in our world, we need leaders that are vertically developed.

In order to develop vertically, we must get at core of our verticality: our mindsets.

If we can become conscious and aware of our mindsets, it provides us with the opportunity to shift to a more elevated way of processing and behaving.

Climb on!

A Learning Mindset is the One “Killer App” We All Need

To receive the weekly blogs via email, please sign-up here.

This blog is provided by Steve Terrell, President of Aspire Consulting.  It is a companion to his interview on Innovating Leadership, Co-creating Our Future titled Learning Mindset for Leaders: Leveraging Experience to Accelerate Development that aired on September 1st, 2020.

In Learning Mindset for Leaders, I have attempted to distil some of the knowledge and insights I have gained over my 30+ year career in leadership development, including the deep research into global leadership development I undertook while earning my doctorate in the field. Through this research, I sought to understand how global leaders learned and developed the important competencies and skills they needed to become effective global leaders. The essence of the research results is what I now call Learning Mindset.

Learning Mindset is the “Killer App” of learning, growth, and development through experience. It is the master competency, the one competency to “rule them all.” It is especially important that global leaders have a Learning Mindset during challenging or difficult situations because those are the very experiences that offer significant risks of failure as well as opportunities for personal and organizational development.

Leaders with a Learning Mindset who encounter difficult challenges have a strong tendency to create value from the crucible of negative experiences. As a result, they create their own virtuous cycle of learning and performance, enabling them to learn more from their experiences, which in turn results in

their being more resilient and performing better in VUCA conditions. This leads to achievement of better results and reinforces the importance and value of the Learning Mindset.

A Learning Mindset is an attitude that predisposes you to be open to new experiences, to believe you can and will learn, and to intentionally grow and develop from your experience. The dimensions of a Learning Mindset form essential capabilities for global leadership and bear directly on global leaders’ efficacy in a crisis. Believing in one’s own learning and growth potential enables global leaders to face new challenges with confidence, tempered with humility. Openness to experience allows them to take in a wide variety of information and to process it with an appreciation of its potential value. Being motivated, willing, and desiring to learn focuses global leaders’ energies and attention on grasping new problems and sensing new possibilities. Curiosity about others urges global leaders to wonder how people in other cultures approach the pandemic, what they can learn from different points of view, and make new connections based on new insights. An attitude of discovery and exploration energizes global leaders to investigate the challenges presented by the coronavirus dilemma. Perhaps most important of all, global leaders with a Learning Mindset engage in experiences with an intention and willingness to gain something positive from every experience, including – and sometimes, especially – extremely difficult, thorny, and dangerous experiences.

When global leaders enact a Learning Mindset they are better able to envision and reach for stability beyond the volatility; create space to reduce uncertainty; understand and simplify the complexity; and eventually find clarity for their organizations amidst the ambiguity.

The Better Human Experience PART 2 SLEEP

Sleep and rest, something we all know so much about, right?

Welcome to PART 2 of “The better Human Experience”. Or as we like to call it, things we should have learned in school.

I have done countless hours of research on both sleep and rest. If I’m honest I started doing the research so I could have something to support my not wanting to do either of these things. For many years I saw sleep as something that got in the way of my productivity, rest was just something I laughed at.
I’m sure there are many of you out there nodding your heads right now. Don’t get too excited. What I found through my many years of research and my own physical, mental, emotional trials and tribulations.

Sleep is essential to Leading a healthy life. Rest at appropriate times is the best way to set yourself up to sleep better!
As a matter of fact, these two things may be the most important things you can do for yourself. In a world that is still largely about being reactive instead of proactive, we are still having to find these things out for ourselves. Research shows that one of the worst segments in North America for lack of sleep is the medical field itself!( conventional that is) p.s. sleeping pills do not count. They give you the illusion that you are sleeping well, they cannot give you the proper sleep cycles that your body so desperately needs.

Imagine my frustration when I could no longer argue the benefits of my destructive lifestyle.
On today’s so we are talking to Dr. Nicholas Jensen, naturopath doctor out of Vancouver British Columbia Canada.
Please listen in and get some tips on how to take care of yourself.

For those of you that have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep once you are there.
If you are worried about your memory.
Believe you never dream.
Feel like you could fall back asleep a few hours after you have just woken up?
Want to talk about your teenagers sleeping habits?…
Please contact us at know BS talk.
Sleep hygiene is a specialty for some obvious and some not so obvious reasons.

Many years later I am very protective of my sleep and the side benefits have been shocking to say the least. Issues I suffered from that I thought were just genetic or something I was just going to have to live with.
Please don’t let something as simple (yet difficult) as lack of sleep get in your way.
We are here to support you or find someone that can.

The Better Human Experience PART 1

The Better Human Experience part one of the series. We are excited, and grateful, to have our special guest Wendi Michelle join us for some down to earth advice on nutrition. As well as a chance to really get to know her.

Wendi is a published author and has advised and served as a founding member to health centers across the U.S.. She has developed food products, supplements and the most diverse holistic health programs and coaching platforms for Executives, Athletes and Children.

This show is for those of you who have ever struggled with weight, whether putting it on or taking it off, as well as the confusion over the cornucopia of available diet options in this day and age. Spoiler Alert – often NO diet is one of the BEST diets.
This is also an area of expertise for me (Julie Turner). I LOVE to take things back to basics! Nutrition should not be that difficult.

Through many years of working with clients to improve their health something interesting emerged around nutrition. I noticed a very common theme. It seemed to me that their connection with food was emotional, very seldom was it about the proper nutrition for their body.
The better Human Experience series is all about what we believe to be “things we should have learned in school.”
The topic of nutrition will have to be split into many shows I’m sure as it is a big one!

One thing I would love to shed some light on Right Here and Now is that our minds should not control our nutrition. At least not in a reactive manner we need to be proactive and having a proper knowledge base in this area will be amazing!

Often throughout my course,I speak of being smarter than our mind. Left to its own devices it can be a little bit of an imp. Our mind will look for familiarity and past situations where we felt comfort. What does that look like when it comes to eating?

Picture this…
You’ve had a rough day at work/School. You get home and for some reason you are craving chocolate chip cookies. Do you think your body actually needs chocolate chip cookies? Let me answer for you…no!
The chocolate chip cookie craving comes from a memory. You don’t actually connect with the memory necessarily, but your subconscious mind does. It remembers a Time when a loved one, maybe grandma or Mom, made you chocolate chip cookies and listened to your stories and smiled and you simply felt good. So when you crave feeling that good Comfort feeling, our minds tell us it’s time for those cookies.
Of course our bodies will crave certain things that we get from certain foods. There can be a little bit of that but make no mistake if you have a hard time saying no to certain foods. It might be time to look at the emotional needs that you are silencing with this Behavior.
If you have any questions, concerns or cries of outrage around this or any other topics we discuss. Tune in and then reach out after the show!

Be Awesome, be you!

The Business Interpretation of Performance: ENGAGEMENT – “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business Series

In this path of understanding how to apply Martial Arts principles into our business leaves, we need to know what engagement is and how to bring it into our companies and team members.

Engagement can take many forms and as we advance in our deepest knowledge of what we do, we have to learn how to focus, how to make it happen, how to create an engagement environment and above all, how to inspire creativity from our people.

This is the third part of what Winston Price and I have called ‘the Martial Arts of Business Series’. From the concept of intent to mind-shift we now come to learning how to be and become engaged. In other words, we will learn how to create an engaged organization.

It is very important to anticipate and understand the market place and our businesses; as a result, we need to change our attitude, our vision and our Mind. Thus engaging better we can change our mindset and improve our performance.

As we know, Martial Arts are systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development.

Business and Entrepreneurship, on the other side, are a combination of creative activities that bring out innovation, competition and practices that generate the new ideas and concepts that bring us the best products and services into the market place. Combining them will require discipline, persistence, skills and a creative artist view.

And we will be doing all of this focusing on performance, empowerment, motivation and a defining mindset in order to create a stronger level of ENGAGEMENT in our organizations.

Develop the “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business Series”.

Performing at Your Best: Mindset Evolution:
When we talk about Business or entrepreneurial success, we might not be really sure what it is or how to define it; and this will prove to be critical. You need to know where you are today and where you are going; then, figure out your plan to get there.

Whether you have been in business for years or you are a start-up, things look harder and more difficult than what you originally thought, take more time and might have a bigger cost than planned. Your three main resources: time, team and money will be tested over and over again. What you need to do here is to understand what makes you apart, what is important for you and your company and how can you start redirecting some of the approaches and ideas you have been using in the past.

This actually is the number one critical issue for all people and companies that do need to change: adapt and be flexible. This implies realizing the need to adapt to the changing business environments, looking at the trends in the market and your industry, while improving some of the important areas (if not all) in your company.

When you do it, something starts to happen and suddenly there is a better flow of energy, new ideas start to flourish, a more dynamic team takes action, goals are reached and visions are aligned. In all, you, your staff, team members and your company start talking about success and what it would mean to be successful (and yes we know we all measure Success in a different way).

There are many definitions on business success and in this program we will be discussing some ideas that will allow you to understand some of the Key Elements to Entrepreneurial Success.

We had an incredible year filled with amazing concepts, new themes, inspiring notes and fabulous interviews: Joan Detz, Margaret Maclay, Steve Olds, Marc Koehler, Bob Burg, Hans Trupp, Michelle Poler, you name it. We talked about business ideas and fear; emotional intelligence and franchises; business expertise alongside purpose and vision; and we talked about the Sustainable Development Goals issued by the United Nations. We focused on improving and changing your mindset in order to increase your performance.

Join me in this one hour show as we review our first year on Performance and Mindset.

Over the course of the year from June 2015 to May 2016 we had an incredible team that helped us reach thousands of listeners form all over the world; we invited amazing guests, talked about important business issues and development tools. And most importantly, we talked about you, your teams, your companies and how you can improve your performance while changing your mindset.

In this hour-long show we will review the best highlights from an amazing year so please join us as we review our first year on Performance and Mindset!
