How to Have a Great Business Culture!

business culture2

“Culture is a little like dropping an Alka-Seltzer into a glass – you don’t see it, but somehow it does something” – Hans Magnus Enzensberger

Yes, culture certainly does something within an organization. Culture sets the tone of how we do things around here. It defines and explains the way a business operates.

How is Culture Like An Iceberg?
We know from the Titanic that only the top of the iceberg was visible; the larger portion was underneath the water and invisible yet had great impact – it brought the Titanic down!

So, the visible aspects of culture (the 10%) are what we see on the surface: For example, the company logo, symbols, how space is used, the way people dress or the way they talk.

The not so visible, elements of culture (the 90%) are the values (what’s important, what we care about) and the norms (the ways people are expected to act). They impact the organization in three things:

1. Establishes an identity – people feel connected and committed.
2. Aligns everyone’s behavior so that they’re rowing in the same direction.
3. Provides the basis for making the right decisions and taking the right actions.

Essentially, it is what’s below the water line that drives the organization to success or failure.

Why Is Culture Important?
In a Deloitte Consulting study, 98% of executives and 88% of employees believe workplace culture is important to business success. Companies, with a strong culture, outperform companies with weak cultures because:

Their reputation as a great place to work will attract and retains great talent.
People who have a shared purpose work better together and achieve more.
Greater customer satisfaction will lead to better retention and referrals.

What’s Your Culture?
Culture is not putting nice sounding words on a piece of paper and posting it on the walls. Or trying to imitate or copy another company’s culture. It gets built one day at time, one interaction after interaction. So, how to start? Get feedback.

1. At your next staff, team or board meeting ask:

If you had to describe what it’s like to work here, what would you tell someone?
If you could change one thing to make your job easier, what would it be?
What kind of a person succeeds here? Fails here?

2. Also talk with your customers and ask:

What is it like to do business with us? Are we easy or difficult to work with?
If you could change one thing to have a better experience, what would it be?
Do we exceed, meet or disappoint your expectations? How can we improve?

Smart Moves Tip: The Business Edge
Much of culture is played out in the day-to-day interactions between employees and their managers and between customers with your staff. So what leaders, who want to get results, need must realize is that their actions –what they do or don’t do—influences the perception of the company’s culture both inside and outside the company.

Are You a Talent Magnet?

Marcia Zidle Smart Moves Coach

Talent is the make-or-break issue for business success. Few leaders would challenge that statement. However, how many live and lead by it? If you are serious about improving your capacity to attract and retain top talent, here’s what you need to do to fire up your company’s growth engine to be a talent magnet.

1. Hang out with them.
Get to know the most talented individuals early on, when you don’t need them. Who are they really as people, versus what they do for a living? What interests them, excites them, drives them? The very best time to get to know people is to informally socialize with them at industry, professional or community events. Keep these individuals apprised of your company’s purpose, current work and potential exciting opportunities. If you don’t establish a relationship first, chances are you will end up not getting them when you need them.

2. Entice them.
Create and manage the right expectations from the start. Ask yourself the question: “Why would top talent want to work for us?” Paying top dollar is never a good enough reason for the best talent to join and stay with you. To break out of the pack, look within your organization. How are you different? It could be little things like free Friday lunch to big things like sabbaticals after so many years.

3. Excite them.
Look at their hearts — and not just their smarts. The average resume is long on accomplishments and qualifications, and short on purpose and passion. Which is fine if you’re merely in search of technical skills. Yet, in situations where you expect people to step up to uncertainty — to do unprecedented things and deliver breakthrough results — you need to focus on candidates’ motivation, values and purpose. What can you tap into?

4. Invest in them.
We’re frequently amazed by how a company transitions new talent into a new milieu. “Sink or swim” is a risky strategy for both the person and the organization. New talent wants to succeed so help them. Provide coaching, learning and development opportunities. Top talent can intuit when you’re only interested in what they can do for you and soon they’ll be looking for greener pastures.

Smart Moves Tip:
How well do you stack up against these four factors? Realize attracting, engaging and retaining top talent is the most critical factor to your business success today and the future. Do you need to fire up your talent growth engine? Do you want to be a talent magnet? Boomer Burnout

wheaties_cover

As a generation we have responded to a plethora of challenges; demands of work and family, the crashing and burning of financial markets, (how many recessions have we lived through) layoffs, cost cutting, substance abuse, parents, siblings, and of course for some of us, teenage children. The reasons why we may be burnt out are numerous.

Cutting slack to the boomer generation is not what I do; coaching up our generation is what I do, and to say there is a passion for reaching deep and inspiring others would be an understatement of Godzillalike proportions.

Here comes the Kool-Aid everyone!

Remember back in the day (we did not coin that term but borrowing is ok in my book) when we were telling everyone never trust anyone over 30? That the ‘Generation Gap’ of our parents and us was so profound that we just knew they would never get it, and that loud music and the Beatles, acid rock and disco were the scourge of a generation. We find the tables completely flipped everyone (everyone being us, the boomers) in that the consensus is building that we are becoming relics, heck the youngest of the baby boomers started turning 50 this year!

Relics, pppppleeeeeasssse!

Burnout is just a phase, like taking a breather, time for some regrouping and re-evaluation of our next fifty years. Time to get over the “been there-done that” mindset and shift into fourth gear. We’ve got plenty left in the tank.

Transitional competitiveness is a term that resonates with me, kind of like playing hoop in the driveway or playing touch football in the street with the neighbor kids, building friendships and skills took practice and engagement. You do not become an empowered
generation by sabotaging your own success, and we are destined to pick up our games and get leading: the 21st century and our younger generations need guidance.

Mike Murphy of Time magazine had a cool quote recently that he used in the context of pumping up the Republican party which was, “we can do the hard work we must do to win: leave our comfort zone, face and fix our policy weaknesses, revamp our rusty tactics and focus relentlessly on tomorrow’s voters instead of yesterday’s”. I liken his attitude to a larger demographic, the 80 million or so baby boomers who may be in need of a fresh mindset, and some inspirational rah-rah!

Climbing the ladder of life is the fun part of our journey.  Think about that for a second and when you are feeling a little bit worn out, or burnt out.  Walter Wriston, former chairman of CEO of Citigroup said “when you retire you go from who’s who to who’s that”.

Ugh!

Investing in quality of life can be likened to the perpetual 401k, think about the diversification of personal attributes and adding value to the world for the betterment of humanity.  If you keep your personal compass pointed in the direction of success you eventually will find happiness.  Fearing success, or fearing that next ‘thing’ you want to try, disables our love of life.

You gotta fight for the right to ‘Maximize Your Quality of Life’.  As Benjamin Franklin said, “time is money” it is up to each of us if we are going to increase our wealth, our personal bank of well-being, happiness and health.  I believe together we’ve got a lot more in the tank baby.  As my friend Judy Diaz of ‘Next Avenue’ said to me it’s all about “how to be my best over 50”!

I love it, how about you!?

Peace

Stress is most often attributed to not having enough TIME. Our society is so focused on succeeding, progressing, and getting ahead, that our health, quality of life, and actual dreams and goals are falling to the wayside. Rather than viewing time as a limiting and confining factor of our day to day, Howard Falco encourages us to rethink our perspective. Falco hopes to help others realize that they have the creative power over how their life unfolds. Tune in on Monday, June 23 to hear Richard Levy talk with Howard Falco about his new release: TIME IN A BOTTLE: Mastering the Experience of Time. 2PM Central, 3PM Eastern, 12PM Pacific on the Empowerment Channel at Voice America.

Be Positive, Be Productive By Dr. Paula Joyce

Positive-Outlook

Negative thoughts eat up our time, energy and health, not to mention our self-esteem. Research says:

  •          90% of our self-talk is negative.
  •         1 to 8 hours a day is spent worrying (1/16th to ½ of our waking hours).
  •         Most heart attacks occur Sunday night due to worry about returning to work.

Yet, only 8% of what we worry about actually happens. If you can do something to prevent an unpleasant outcome, do it. If there’s nothing you can do, visualize, think, write, draw or say the outcome you want. At the very least, you will shift your mood.

Negative thinking is a habit of the mind that you can change. Commit to using the ideas in this article that appeal to you and observe yourself becoming more positive, happier and more productive. The time and energy that you are spending on worrying and negative thoughts will be freed up for fun and productivity.

An easy technique is listening to music that makes you feel good. Lately I’ve been playing “The Time of Our Lives.” I wake up in the morning with the words singing in my head, which brings a smile to my lips and an excitement to my day.

One minister has started a project that encourages people to wear a rubber band bracelet that says “no more complaints.” Every time you complain, you switch the bracelet to the other wrist to remind yourself not to do it again. The goal is to keep the bracelet on the same wrist for 21 consecutive days—the length of time it takes to change a habit. The people who have stopped complaining report being happier and more relaxed.

When you hear yourself saying or thinking something negative, immediately replace it with a positive. For instance, in response to “how are you?” instead of saying “bad headache” or “boss chewed me out”, think of something good in your life and share it.

Laughter is the best medicine, and it does matter how we formulate our jokes. Humor can be kind and gentle or mean and derogatory. Think about the jokes that you tell and whether you’d like to be the target of the “punch” line. Tell a kind joke or if you’re working on a difficult project, force a laugh or smile and watch yourself fly through your work and see others “catch” the good feeling.

Read this statement at least once a day: “All will be provided, especially for those who have an open heart to abundance.”

Before you go to bed, write:  “I intend to …… in a positive way.” List the main things that you want to accomplish the next day, including how you want to feel during the day, e.g., joyful, positive, self-confident, inspired. As soon as you wake up, read the list out loud or in a hushed voice.

Cleanse your environment of negativity. Think about whether you’re uplifted or brought down by the visual images, words and people that you allow into your mind and space. Be as conscious of what you feed your mind as you are of what you feed your body.

We’ve all heard: no one would write on their tombstone, “I wish I spent more time at work.” Wouldn’t it be nice to write, “I enjoyed the time I spent at work and at home.” You have the power to create that life.
