Maria Wong and Brigitte Jia host an informative program about sexual assault awareness and prevention among teenagers. From discussing the novel, “Accused: A Retaliation Novel #2” by Yasmin Shiraz that focuses on the rampancy and consequences of sexual assault among teenagers on college campuses in Segment 1 to talking in depth about Brigitte Jia’s article, “Roots of the Juvenile Court System” in Segment 2, Maria and Brigitte elicit and raise awareness of what sexual assault is, why it occurs, and college administrations’s support towards sexual assault victims.

In Segment 3 and 4, Javier Lopez, a preventive educator from the Community Violence Solutions and facilitator for the Male Ally Program, talks to Maria and Brigitte about preventive measures, the importance of consent, and educative programs for sexual assault awareness and prevention.   Remember, if you are a victim of sexual assault, know that you are not to blame. That’s why the hosts and reporters of Express Yourself!™ are writing a new book, Be the Star You Are!® for Millennials scheduled for release later this year! In the meantime, the team are busy interviewing, reporting, and gathering life skills. This week hosts Asya Gonzalez and Katie Choo interview seventeen year old award winning actress and screenwriter, Mandalynn Carlson about her meteoric career, her screenplays, and what she’s learned working in show business. Katie Lyons joins the conversation to share her love of writing indicating that she’s been crafting stories since before she could write. The young ladies greatly admire writer JK Rowlings who rose from homelessness to being the most famous writer in the world. The message is to believe in your dreams, work hard, never give up, and write on!


Bio for Mandalynn Carlson
Mandalynn Carlson is an award-winning American teen actress, whose first professional film appearance was a supporting role in the 2011 action biopic “Machine Gun Preacher” with Gerard Butler. Leaving Michigan for Hollywood, Carlson has found success staring in dozens of independent films and television shows, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “CSI:NY”. Mandalynn is outspoken against bullying, having dealt with it during elementary and middle school. She started college at 15 years of age and maintains a 4.0 GPA in the film studies curriculum. A fantastic story-teller, Carlson is creating screenplays she hopes to produce and direct that deal with women and girls self-image and self-worth under her production company Smash The Glass Pictures. While she prefers to be in front of the camera, she maintains that she must always be creative and will pursue directing, to fill in gaps. Summertime is here and that means traveling. It’s time to leave your comfort zone, explore, experiment, and enjoy exciting new destinations. Hosts Youngjoo Ahn and Henna Hundal talk about their summer travel plans while offering tips and tricks for a healthy, happy vacation, whether it be to a foreign country or around the block. Health Beat Reporter, Nicole Eubanks, couldn’t be on the show but she gave her helpful ideas to the hosts to share.

Special guest is 14 year-old Mandalynn Carlson, an actor, singer sassy stand-up comedian, and an outspoken advocate for anti-bullying.  She stars in the feature film debuting this summer, A Horse for Summer with Dean Cain. Mandalynn also starred as Annie in The Dead Kid, which tells a bullying story from her perspective, a film currently on the world film festival circuit. She travels extensively for her work as an actor and was the series lead in Brenda Forever, a guest star on Scandal, a co-star on CSI-NY, a recurring character on Totally, as well as a supporting role in Machine Gun Preacher. She is touring Southern California schools with the troupe from Music is My Language promoting anti-bullying and loves working in Arizona.
