COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION: HOW TO STAND OUT AND OPEN DOORS THROUGH YOUR WRITTEN WORD by Hemda Mizrahi and Elaine Rosenblum

Elaine Rosenblum Head Shot

How can you negotiate better, improve your self-presentation skills, and prevent misunderstandings that may emerge from e-communications, such as texting and emailing? Elaine Rosenblum, JD, an expert in COLLABORATIVE COMMUNICATION, joined me on “Turn the Page” to share tactics that will enable you to open doors through your written and spoken words.

Listen to our conversation to hear the full range of her suggestions and illustrations.

Elaine states, “To avoid potential miscommunication, SPECIFICITY is as important as shifting from judgmental to neutral language, especially in texting or emailing people you don’t know well, or in professional interactions.”

She provides two examples:

MICHAEL, AN EMORY MBA STUDENT PITCHING HIMSELF FOR A JOB
Elaine suggests to Michael: Instead of  “I think I have the skills to do this job,” let your interviewers know, “I am an Emory MBA with four years of beverage marketing experience at Coca Cola and Starbucks. I can conduct business in English, French and Spanish.”

FROM INDIANA UNIVERSITY TO GOLDMAN SACHS
“Young people interviewing for first jobs typically only have internship experience and minimal workplace skills. It’s imperative for recent or soon-to-be grads to understand “transferable skills” and articulate what makes them uniquely interesting. This Indiana student was a poker prodigy at nine. Few college juniors can own this proposition. Poker also has transferable skills to Wall Street. The Goldman feedback was that telling an engaging “story” about his “poker gift” is what set him apart and landed him the “long-shot” position.  Even seasoned executives have to work to maintain their specificity when articulating.”

MORE ON SPECIFICITY
“Using “them,” “it,” or “that” as reference points in texting may not provide adequate context. While it takes more actual texting words, directly stating time and place or redefining who “them” or what “it” or “that” is can prevent misunderstandings.”

Elaine offers three examples:
Revise “What time are you meeting them?” to “What time are you meeting Susie and Tom tonight?”

Change “What’s bothering you about the erupting situation?” to “What exactly concerns you about the disagreement between Susie and Tom that seemed to arise at the party on Saturday night?”

Instead of “Do you plan to do that?” state “Do you plan to attend the 7:00 pm San Francisco trip meeting on Tuesday, 4/3?”

BOND IN WRITING…AND FACE-TO-FACE
“While verbal communication typically evaporates after we say it, written communications survive and can serve as meaningful reference points. Communicating with clarity is a leadership skill and way of standing out in a professional world that demands immediate communication and moves too quickly. In personal relationships, SPECIFICITY builds invaluable trust and enhances the bonding that we crave and continually seek out on social media.”

In emphasizing how we can communicate to avoid unnecessary conflict and strengthen interpersonal connections, Elaine suggests that we avoid OVERRELYING on the written word: “The emotional satisfaction of a face-to-face conversation is difficult to replicate on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.”

RESOURCES THAT WILL GUIDE YOU TO “YES”
Improve your outcomes by going deeper in honing your collaborative communication skills. Elaine recommends: “Getting to Yes” by Roger Fisher and William Uri; “Alone Together” by Sherry Turkle; and the ProForm U™ blog by Elaine Rosenblum.

Learn about ProFormU™, Elaine’s consulting and mentoring firm, which “teaches students and professionals at all levels to articulate, collaborate and negotiate in virtually any setting.”

While we focused on the tactic of specificity in this post, Elaine shares other requirements and nuances of collaborative communication in our conversation on “Turn the Page.” Here’s the link for you to listen now.

Teaching our bodies to use energy wisely is the first step.” These are the words on the inside cover of Joseph Cardillo’s new book, “Body Intelligence: Harness Your Body’s Energies for Your Best Life.” He says, “You are energy, your world is energy and everything in your world is energy.” Guess what we’re going to talk about on this show? Cella’s Chat: Why Love Heals: Health As a Natural Consequence of this Healing Energy

DeanShrockDean Shrock, Ph.D, is a mind-body-spirit medicine specialist and the author of two books:  Doctor’s Orders: Go Fishing and Why Love Heals.  His first book is not about cancer as much as it is about life. Dr. Dean Shrock, will discuss his book, Why Love Heals, which discusses while working with cancer patients, he witnessed how bringing more joy and meaning into life surely could affect a patient’s quality of life.  Dr. Shrock’s research published in 1999 found that it extended their length of life. He concluded they lived longer because they felt listened to, cared for, and supported. People who are busy doing what they like to do not only tend to forget their aches and pains, but experience a positive effect on their quality and length of life.

Dr. Shrock was very intrigued by his finding that feeling loved and cared for could extend survival with cancer. This culminated in his 2009 bestselling book, Why Love Heals. Dean Shrock, Ph.D. began training to be a lecturer in a self-help program with its founder, Ken McCaulley. Shrock returned to college in 1980, graduating from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio with a master’s in Community and College Counseling in 1983, and completing his doctorate in Counseling Psychology in 1986. His doctoral dissertation was titled, Relaxation, Guided Imagery, and Wellness. In 1986 Dr. Shrock completed a post-doctoral internship where he developed a research proposal for the Cleveland Clinic to test the effectiveness of guided imagery with cancer patients. In 1987 he interned as a staff psychologist with the Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in State Why love HealsCollege, Pa. While there he also interned with Dr. Carl Simonton at the Simonton Cancer Center where he initiated his research with psychological approaches to cancer care. In 1988 Dr. Shrock was hired by a physician management group to provide psychological services for their cancer centers. Here he developed a wellness program whose primary purpose was to instill a greater “will to live”. While bringing more joy and meaning into life surely could affect a patient’s quality of life, Dr. Shrock’s research published in 1999 found that it extended their length of life. He concluded they lived longer because they felt listened to, cared for, and supported. His experience and expertise led to his being invited to co-author the chapter on Mind-Body Medicine in Dr. Donald Abrams’ and Dr. Andrew Weil’s 2009 textbook, Integrative Oncology. Dr. Shrock wrote a book in 2000 about the wellness program he taught and the insights he gained. This book, Doctor’s Order’s: Go Fishing, is not about cancer, as much as it is about life. Readers can use the information to get well or stay well. People who are busy doing what they like to do not only tend to forget their aches and pains, but experience a positive effect on their quality and length of life.   However, Dr. Shrock was very intrigued by his finding that feeling loved and cared for could extend survival with cancer. This culminated in his 2009 bestselling book, Why Love Heals. He now resides in Yachats on the Oregon coast and lectures regularly about his “Going Fishing” approach to life. His books and presentations highlight his discovery that joy and peace of mind are essential for health – and how to find them. “Cella’s Chat” airs live on Thursday at 1 PM Pacific / 2 PM Central / 4 PM Eastern on The VoiceAmerica Health and Wellness Channel. Just For Today By Dr. Yomi Garnett
self control

JUST FOR TODAY, I will accept that, although I cannot stop certain things from happening, how I react is what matters most.  I cannot stop the traffic light from changing to red.

And even if I was in an inordinate hurry, I must terminate my break-neck speed at the sight of that red light.  Whether I am happy about this, or frustrated about it, is of little or no consequence.  The germane fact is really quite simple: I have no control over the traffic lights.

Today, I will remember the 90/10 Rule of Life.  10% of my life depends on what happens to me.  90% of my life depends on how I react to it.  In real terms, this means I have no control over 10% of what happens to me.  For instance, I cannot stop my car from breaking down, any more than I can terminate a sudden storm that prevents my plane from taking off to Jamaica, where I have an important scheduled meeting.  Indeed, I have no control over this 10% of the circumstances of my life.  The other 90%, however, is of a marked difference, if only because I determine it.  Friend, did I hear you skeptically ask, “how?”  And, my really simple response is, “By my reaction.”  Yes, indeed, I may be quite unable to control the red light, but, certainly, I can control my reaction to the Red light.  Today, I easily recall the all-too-human story of David Preston, a middle-aged resident of a quiet, upper middle class neighborhood in a Philadelphia suburb.  He was eating breakfast with his family.  His daughter inadvertently knocked over a cup of coffee, even as a wide stain spread rapidly over the front of David’s pristine white dress shirt.

He had no control over the unfortunate incident, and the final outcome of the entire episode would be determined by how he reacted.  David chose to curse loudly, harshly scolding his daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears.  David next turned angrily on his spouse, and virulently chastised her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. An unpleasant verbal altercation ensued. Shortly after this, David stormed upstairs to change his shirt.  Meanwhile, back downstairs, his miserable daughter had occupied herself with crying, rather than eating her breakfast, and unable to be ready for school at the appropriate time, she missed the school bus.  Having dissipated valuable time into bickering, his spouse had to rush out for an early appointment with a client.  David had to rush to his car to drive his daughter to school.

Not unnaturally, being late, he exceeded the speed limit for suburban traffic, and had to suffer a fine of  $40 after an excruciating twenty minute delay.  On arrival at the school, his daughter dashed out of the car without as much as a backward glance.  David eventually arrived the office twenty minutes late, only to discover that, because of inordinate haste, he had forgotten his briefcase at home.  Quite obviously, his day had started on a very bad note. It got worse.

Finally, he could only look forward to coming home.  Sadly though, he arrived home to a strained relationship with his spouse and daughter.  All because of an unwholesome reaction to the spilling of coffee on his shirt!  Today, if someone says something negative about me, I will merely let the attack roll off like water on glass.

Indeed, I will react appropriately, and it will not ruin my day.  And, when someone cuts me off in the traffic, I will resolutely refuse to lose my temper.  I will decidedly not pound on the steering wheel in frustration.  My ten minutes lateness to work will not cost the firm the whole world.

No one will be permitted to ruin this morning’s pleasant drive to the office.  So, the plane is late, and I am going to be late for the rather crucial meeting.  I will resolutely refuse to take out my frustration on the flight attendant.  For, after all, she had no control over what was going on.

I would, rather, invest my time in useful study and the fulfilling past time of knowing the new person sitting next to me.

Today, the brilliant, new vista of an exciting and infinitely more positive life looms ahead of me, as I prepare to live by the 90/10 principle.  And, for me, one good day will always follow the next.  There will be little or no stress in my life.  And, my life will be filled with joy and wholesome relationships.  Just for this day, I will understand the 90/10 principle, and my life will change forever!

ACTION EXERCISE

Why did David’s day turn out a nightmare?

A) Did the coffee cause it?

B) Did his daughter cause it?

C) Did the booking policeman cause it?

D) Did David cause it?

The answer is: David caused it.

He had no control over the incident with the coffee.  His unfortunate reaction in the immediacy of the incident was what caused his bad day.  Together, let us attempt to reconstruct a better sequence of events.  Coffee splashes over David. His daughter is on the verge of tears.  David, gently puts her at her ease: “It’s ok honey, you just need to be more careful next time.”  David runs upstairs with a towel.

He throws on a new shirt, and grabbing his briefcase, he is back in time to look through the window and see his child getting on the bus. She turns and waves.  David and his spouse kiss before he goes to work.  David arrives five minutes early and cheerfully greets his co-workers.

David’s boss commends him for his effective supervision of his current project.

Changes in Gratitude: Changes In Attitude By Deborah Jane Wells (Part 1 of 2)

DeborahCatI first became acquainted with the idea of a gratitude practice in 1995 through Sarah Ban Breathnach’s book Simple Abundance. The book’s core concept was to begin and end each day by naming at least five things for which I was grateful. Some days the list overflowed with twenty-five or more items, evidence of my consciousness of the generosity of the Universe. Other days, when I perceived things as going poorly, I struggled to identify even five things for which I was thankful.

I followed the gratitude practice off and on through the years but abandoned it entirely at the very time when I could have most benefited from it. When I got insanely, stressfully busy in the final years of my consulting career, I left the gratitude practice by the side of the road, having erroneously concluded that I was too busy to be intentionally grateful.

Fast forward to 2010, when I had left consulting, lost eighty pounds, escaped depression, and began pursuing my calling as an empowerment coach and Reiki master, teaching others about the transformative power of falling in love with themselves. Though love, respect, curiosity, and compassion were serving me well in manifesting unconditional self-love, sometimes when my life became especially complex, the judging voice could still take over with its fear-based constricting messages of doom and gloom.

One day, during written meditation, I remembered the power of my former gratitude practice and wondered if it might be the missing link. As I went beyond just a morning and evening event to making it a way of life I call radical gratitude, here is what I discovered.

Love and gratitude serve as the bookends of constructive core energy. Between them, they encompass and support all the other aspects of love: respect, curiosity, and compassion. Love initiates the flow of core energy; gratitude expands it. Love is the originator. Gratitude is the catalyst. Through the eyes of gratitude, we see that everything is an opportunity, a grace-filled gift of Universal love characterized by loving-kindness, elegant beauty, copious generosity, and infinite mercy.

Radical gratitude fosters a life of generous, effortless, gracious flow filled with faith, hope, prosperity, peace, and joy. What might this look like in real life? Let’s start with the example of cleaning the litter boxes for my three beloved cats, SiddhaLee, Mortimer, and Maisy Jane—my constant companions, playmates, comforters, teachers, and assistants.

The rule of thumb for litter boxes is to have at least one more box than the number of cats. With experimentation, I discovered that, ever the overachievers, my three cats require six boxes that are scooped free of any refuse morning and night. In addition, once a month, those six boxes must be washed, dried, and refilled with a fresh batch of litter. We’re talking 70 pounds of litter a month.

As the number of litter boxes escalated, at first I was resentful. Why couldn’t they stop being so territorial and use fewer boxes? I perceived the money and time I was investing as excessive and onerous. Until, a year after he came to live with me, Mortimer became ill and nearly died. When we pulled him back from the brink of death and he began to grow stronger, it finally hit me: cleaning litter boxes isn’t a burden, it’s an act of love. It is a privilege and honor to be able to return a fraction of the love and companionship he and his mates shower on me daily, by handling this hygiene task for them. A funny thing happened; when I chose to shift my energy from resentment to gratitude, litter patrol was no longer an obligation. Now I sing and chatter happily to the cats while I move from room to room, ever their faithful, itinerant scooper.

So many things to be grateful for: clean water; hot showers; healthcare; education; heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer; healthy food; smiles, hugs, and kisses; and physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual abilities.

On-the-spot, real-time gratitude is the most powerful antidote I know to fear and any of its ugly cousins—frustration, judging, resistance, jealousy, worry, scarcity, depression, despair, and the like. When I stay centered in gratitude for all of life’s simple blessings, I find it easier to stay anchored there in the more painful times. The friend who dumps me. The spouse who becomes ill. The hurricane that devastates the beloved South Jersey Shore of my childhood. The movie theater mass shooting in my hometown of Aurora, Colorado. Being present in New York City on September 11, 2001, where I spent the night accounting for my missing consulting colleagues. When viewed through the lens of gratitude, even those painful experiences are opportunities for deeper insight, greater compassion, dramatic personal growth, and increased appreciation for the gift of life. In the words of the great sage Kahlil Gibran, “Wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.”

And, if, on your darkest days, despite your best efforts, you still can find nothing to appreciate, try doing a simple kindness for someone in need. If you are like many, you just may find the hope and gratitude you awaken in another will rekindle the flame of hope and gratitude in your own troubled heart.

Read part 2 of this article for additional insights into the power of gratitude.
