with the Express Yourself! STAR On-Air Team

Produced by Cynthia Brian

Over 350 million people suffer from depression worldwide.  According to the World Mental Health Survey conducted in 17 countries, “1 in 20 people have reported episode of depression in the previous year.” Depression leads to mental deterioration, and, at its worst, can cause individuals to commit suicide, which result in an estimated 1 million deaths every year.  Our teen reporters and hosts share information, tips, and more that help us recognize depression and reduce our stress. Hosts Youngjoo Ahn and Katelyn Darrow lead the discussions with Global Youth Reporter, Ryan Sim tells us to reach out for help. #Hashtag reporter, Alex Lee, believes that social networking leads to increased depression and encourages listeners to distance themselves from technology more often. Youngjoo’s Artsy Gift provides activities,  and depression proof kits to cheer us up. Special guest is the 19 year old You Tube rising star, Joshelyn Smith, who writes songs on her guitar and piano and posts about life, beauty, fitness & wellness, motivation, and anything that tickles her fancy.

Join us at the 15th Annual Pear Festival to meet our Reporters and Writers, Sept. 28, 10am-4pm PT. Fun activities for the family and autographed books.

Review of Dragon Drop by Jerry Ackerman BY CYNTHIA BRIAN

dragon drop

Love is Forever

What would you do if the mythical creature that you’ve always believed was real showed up at your window one evening?  Invite him in, of course!  In Jerry Ackerman’s young adult novel, a little girl contently draws dragons at a cluttered table. Although her dad has told her that dragons are imaginary, he has also said that the imagination is a wonderful thing allowing anything to be as real as a person wants.  Outside the window, a dragon that looks exactly like her drawn portrait peers at the scene. Through the Transzip, he has landed on earth at the home of ten year-old Lily and her parents.  His life is about to change forever.

This is a novel about friendships, family, devotion, and love. It is also about telling the truth while holding back words or thoughts that could be hurtful. It’s a book about discovery, believing in the impossible, and tapping into our source.  Most of all, the novel is entertaining, sweet, and a great read for all ages.

The author wrote this story as a love note to his daughter. Through his spirited words, it’s obvious that family, connection, love, respect, and caring are paramount in one’s life. Py, the dragon, represents the author, while Lily, the child in the book, embodies the true-life characteristics of his daughter, Sierra.

This is a heartfelt read for the entire family. I laughed, cried, and got goosebumps. Most of all, I am now searching the skies for dragons. They are real.

Listen to an interview with Sierra as she channels Lily on Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio at http://starstyleradio.com/Express_Yourself%21_Radio/Entries/2013/8/27_Keeping_Secrets.html.

Transitioning from One School to Another By Linda Lan Phung and Caie Kelley

girls at school

Edited by Cynthia Brian

Once July comes to an end and August begins, the start of school seems imminent. The prospect of being an older student can feel unreal – especially when memories of the previous year seem so vivid. Even more surreal is the change from being at the top level of the school to the bottom again.

Sophia Li has just completed middle school and will enter the world of high school. Unlike many incoming freshman, Li has a little bit of experience with the academic rigor because she took a math class at Campolindo High School while still in the eighth grade.

Along with a new school, Li looks forward to having her sister in the same school since the last time that occurred was in the second grade. She jokes, adding, “Plus, I’ll have a ride home from school!”

Once situated in school, the transition from one grade level to the next becomes easier because students have familiarized themselves with the system. For rising sophomore Jonathan Zhou, he welcomes the new school year with no fear of getting lost on campus again.

Thinking back, Zhou comments, “I procrastinated and didn’t study very much, but knowing this, I can improve for my AP European History class next year.”

It can be nerve-wracking, imagining oneself in a higher grade with more responsibilities. Summer is the perfect buffer of time, allowing for adjustment and amelioration for a smoother transition to our next educational challenge.

On the other end of the spectrum, recent Miramonte High School graduate Julia Ting nervously anticipates attending college. “It will be a huge change from high school: not only will the academics be much harder, but I will need to take care of myself and make new friends,” she says.

During the summer Ting had time to reflect on her senior year and is determined to improve for college. Many seniors suffer from “senioritis,” a condition in which students lose their drive to excel, especially during the second semester when college applications have already been sent and graduation is nearing.

Ting was no exception. Optimistic, she states, “I had a bad case of senioritis, but hopefully I’ll reset by the end of the summer and recover my motivation once school starts in the fall.”

Preparing for College

Like Ting, many of the graduated high school seniors from the Class of 2013 will soon enter college and life away from home. How have some of these students spent the summer months preparing for the transition?

Gina Nerone, who will be attending the University of Wisconsin in the fall, explained that she wanted to make the most of her time before she left for school. She says, “The week after graduation, my best friend and I went on a road trip through the Pacific North West to celebrate being finished with high school. We travelled to Olympic National Park, added gum to the Gum Wall at Pike Place Market, and tasted the famous ‘Voodoo Doughnuts’ in Portland.”

Several other groups of graduated seniors took trips this summer abroad and around the country as well. Nerone continues, “in terms of my packing list for college, I’m ordering stuff online and picking it up at the stores in Wisconsin. I always knew I wanted to go far away for school, but college has such a different climate and culture. I will miss my close friends and family, yet I also know I am going to have so much fun!”

Her mixture of excitement and nerves seem to be echoed by many of her peers. Zac Nan, who will also be studying out of state soon, says, “I’m really taking advantage of all the moments I have – I am coaching and swimming for my last year at Sleepy Hollow, I go out for frozen yogurt and impromptu day trips, and I went to Disneyland with my family recently – it’s the little things.” His packing list was also light, because shipping is expensive and the amount one can bring is limited on flights. Nan is lucky, because as he says, “My roommate is a sophomore so I don’t have to bring any of the big stuff, which is a huge relief. I am looking forward to what is ahead.”

So whether next year’s destination is far away like Nan’s and Nerone’s or just over the hill, the upcoming transition to college – or to high school – is an exciting prospect in these young Lamorinda teen’s lives. As a soon-to-be college freshman said, “I can’t wait!”

Unplugging BY Linda Lan Phung

unplugging

Edited by Cynthia Brian

It is everywhere, with its never-ending presence and its own city, Silicon Valley, to call home.  Yes, I’m talking about technology, one of the most popular methods for people to stay connected and keep informed with the latest information, including news and personal updates.
The new term for these people is “Generation C” in which the “C” stands for “connected.”  There is no specific age group as being part of Generation C is defined more by a specific trait – tech-addicted.  As a necessity, technology is used as a way to connect, but it has also become an obsession with many young adults dependent on it every minute.

However, that is not the case with rising senior Annie Weber.

Being imaginative, Weber took a break from technology as a present for her father’s birthday. Recounting the event, Weber says, “Going without technology was hard and nerve wracking because I was bored and tempted to listen to my IPod.” To divert her thoughts, she played Scrabble, watched a movie, and ate dinner for the remainder of the night, a total of five hours.
“This idea is an especially good birthday present for those parents who don’t like using technology,” Weber enthusiastically adds. “My parents praised me for being so thoughtful.”

Campolindo student Claire Gratz is the exact opposite.  Though she does not willingly leave her technology, she will busy herself with other activities when she has to turn off the TV or computer.  “I will play volleyball, but that lasts for only one hour,” jokes Gratz.
By unplugging once in awhile we can avail ourselves of opportunities to explore new places and experiences.  Without a phone in tow, Senior Connor Campi kayaked on the Elkhorn Slough, an estuary in Monterey County.  Campi learned something new. “It was amazing to find out from the tour guide that these harbor seals can delay their pregnancy.”

With our current lifestyles, it may seem difficult to suddenly detach from our gadgets.  Nonetheless, when we take small breaks and slowly challenge ourselves to pause more frequently, we may find joy in spending our time more creatively.  Just like Campi, when we brave life without technology for a even a short time period, we may just discover surprising facts about this world that surrounds us.

space.gifThe rapid growth of social media has really been a blessing to anyone who likes to go out and explore different places. This is due to the ease of accessing the reviews and opinions of others. There is no doubt that when you are looking for someplace new to experience, it is really helpful to know what other people have to say about a particular place. And, if you want the app that has the most extensive and useful reviews, TripAdvisor is simply indispensable. Wherever you are, this app helps you access over 100 million user reviews, opinions, and photos to find the best hotels, the best restaurants, and fun and interesting things to do. It also helps you to find flights and compare airfare. Use the ‘Near Me Now’ feature to instantly find out what is close to any address that you enter. This feature will list all nearby hotels, nearby restaurants and nearby things to do, including detailed information, price range, and the type of establishment. The best feature, of course, is the ability to read the numerous reviews and opinions of other travelers to help you make your decision. You will learn the good, the bad, and the ugly and with practice will be able to know which reviews are the most accurate and applicable to you. If you like to travel, whether close to home or in foreign lands, immediately downloading the TripAdvisor app to your smartphone is a wise decision.

Dealing with Peer Pressure

peer pressure

What is peer pressure and how does it affect us? Peer pressure is the influence of the social group on an individual. If you have ever felt like someone was trying to get you to do something that you didn’t want to do, you have experienced peer pressure. Peer pressure is JUST THAT-pressure. Just because “everyone else” is doing it, is not a reason to do “it”. In fact, lots of things people say they are doing, they really aren’t. They are just bragging and trying to get others pressured into doing something.

On Express Yourself!™ today, our co-hosts Caie Kelley and Rachel Glass interview four reporters with various viewpoints pertaining to peer pressure. Isaiah Rankin, reporter for Nature Calls, shares the delicacy of eating tarantulas in Cambodia, our Fashion Forward reporter talks about the influence of fashion and trend on peer pressure. The ladies audition a new reporter, Alex Lee, with his segment #Hashtag and information on the social networking buzz plague, #YOLO. In addition, Economics Tune-Up Reporter, Alex Pawlakos, challenges us to be prudent with our money and the pressure to buy things we don’t want or need.

Peer pressure is a topic that everyone has experienced at one time or another. Our teens urge listeners to be true to themselves, be their own self, their best self and listen to their inner guidance system. Claiming peer pressure is often just an excuse to misbehave.  Be your own person.

Bruce Lee was right when he said, “I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” Listen at Voice America Kids Network:
