The Power of Teamwork (w/ Best-selling author Dr. Brian Goldman)

Join me Thursday, July 20/23 at 1pm EST! I talk with ER physician at Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto), award winning host of CBC Radio’s White Coat, Black Art and The Dose, and bestselling author Dr. Brian Goldman about his latest book “The Power of Teamwork”.

Success for individuals, corporations, and communities comes from the creation of great teams. Though teams build success, they can also be misunderstood and under utilized.

During our chat, Dr. Goldman talks about:

1. Defining a team vs a group,

2. Leadership,

3. How personalities can compliment a team,

4. The Dark Triad (Machiavellians, Sociopaths, Narcissists),

5. Introverts vs Extroverts,

6. Learning from mistakes (and why some refrain from pointing out mistakes),

7. Feeling unsafe in a team,

8. How to build teamwork (Visual Thanking Strategies, Improve?!?…),

9. The benefits of responding with “Yes, and…” vs “Yes, but…”

10. Tips to help kickstart your team building…and so much more.

Dr. Goldman does an incredible job of discussing teamwork and how it’s more than what many people perceive. He leverages his experience from his medical career to provide teamwork insights that apply to all organizations, industries, communities, and board rooms. You don’t want to miss what he has to share. Enjoy!

ENGAGEMENT: The MAGIC of the Martial Art of Business Series Part #3

We already know that creating an excellent team requires dedication, training, commitment and a shared vision. We also need to engage our team members and align them with what we, as managers or business owners, want to achieve in our companies. We need to learn how to engage our employees so they become team members; how we change their mindset so they work on improving on a continuous basis and how to include a new level of thinking and creativity into what they do. At the end, we have an engaged team that delivers better products and services. This is what we all need to achieve. As we know, Martial Arts are systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development. Business and Entrepreneurship, on the other side, are a combination of creative activities that bring out innovation, competition and practices that generate the new ideas and concepts that bring us the best products and services into the market place. Combining them will require discipline, persistence, skills and a creative artist view. And we will be doing all of this focusing on performance, empowerment, motivation and a defining mindset in order to create a strong MIND-SHIFT. Join Winston Price and Luis Vicente Garcia in this second part of the “The MAGIC of Martial Arts of Business Series”, as we explore how ENGAGEMENT will be a crucial part of your growth and success and we will guide you to create Magic in your company and develop “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business Series”. About Winston Price: Winston Price, Senior Executive Producer, has over 20 years of marketing, advertising and public relations experience. He began his business career in 1995 and is a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington. Winston also is a master martial artist and personal trainer with over 25 years of knowledge and experience. A Year on Performance and Mindset! by Luis Vicente Garcia

IMG_1004

What do you think if you hear about a year on Performance and Mindset? For me it has been a celebration of both Entrepreneurial Magic and Personal Success!

Join me as we celebrate a full year with or radio show ‘Performing at Your Best: Mindset Evolution with Luis Vicente Garcia’. We had an incredible year filled with amazing concepts, new themes, inspiring notes and fabulous interviews: Joan Detz, Margaret Maclay, Steve Olds, Marc Koehler, Bob Burg, Hans Trupp, Michelle Poler, you name it. We talked about business ideas and fear; emotional intelligence and franchises; business expertise alongside purpose and vision; and we talked about the Sustainable Development Goals issued by the United Nations. We focused on improving and changing your mindset in order to increase your performance.

Join me in this one hour show as we review our first year on Performance and Mindset.

When we talk about Business or entrepreneurial success, we might not be really sure what it is or how to define it; and this will prove to be critical. You need to know where you are today and where you are going; then, figure out your plan to get there.

Whether you have been in business for years or you are a start-up, things look harder and more difficult than what you originally thought, take more time and might have a bigger cost than planned. Your three main resources: time, team and money will be tested over and over again. What you need to do here is to understand what makes you apart, what is important for you and your company and how can you start redirecting some of the approaches and ideas you have been using in the past.

This actually is the number one critical issue for all people and companies that do need to change: adapt and be flexible. This implies realizing the need to adapt to the changing business environments, looking at the trends in the market and your industry, while improving some of the important areas (if not all) in your company.

When you do it, something starts to happen and suddenly there is a better flow of energy, new ideas start to flourish, a more dynamic team takes action, goals are reached and visions are aligned. In all, you, your staff, team members and your company start talking about success and what it would mean to be successful (and yes we know we all measure Success in a different way).

Over the course of the year from June 2015 to May 2016 we had an incredible team that helped us reach thousands of listeners form all over the world; we invited amazing guests, talked about important business issues and development tools. And most importantly, we talked about you, your teams, your companies and how you can improve your performance while changing your mindset.

In this hour-long show we will review the best highlights from an amazing year so please join us as we review our first year on Performance and Mindset!

The Business Interpretation of Performance: Training Intent – “The MAGIC of the Martial Arts of Business” by Luis Vicente Garcia

Luis Vicente Garcia on Keys to Manageial Success

When we go out to work or live our own lives, we must decide how we are going to do it. When we continue to learn and then implement the knowledge we have accumulated and the abilities we have developed, we need to understand that how we do one thing is how we will do everything we do. At the end, it is all about performance.

Over the years we acquire new knowledge that we must apply; have experiences that we learn from; meet people and start developing a network whom we influence and who we learn from. These factors all combine into allowing us to be who we are today, at a personal and professional level.

It is here where Training, Performance and Focus intersect and define how we do all that we do, simple or complex. It determines our ability to perform in an excellent manner, consistently. Now we must apply the learning and experiences we get from life, and the keys we obtain from sports and martial arts.

Join me as we take the Training Intent of Martial Arts and give it an entrepreneurial meaning, so we can all benefit in our businesses.

Are Your Company’s Values Making An Impact?

values 2

Many companies have a values statement on the wall. But ask employees or even top managers what these values are and, yes, some can rattle them off. But then go further and ask this question: How would I know it if I see it? Then you probably will get a blank stare of some mumble jumble answer.

So how do you bring life to the values in your company?

CPR: is the Answer. Here’s How!

1.Describe Your Values
Organizations often tout their values – accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, respect, teamwork – but when is the last time you asked if these values have been defined in behavioral terms? Do the people know for example what, “respect” looks like, feels like or smells like?

In a leadership development program for a growing hospitality company, each training module included an exercise called “Values in Action”. Here’s an example. Your customers would see “integrity” because you would:
• Deliver what‘s advertised – “don’t feel scammed”.
• Attentively listen to complaints and move to solve the problem.
• Do what you say you were going to do – and if you can’t, say why.

2. Practice Your Values
This involves actually doing what you say you value. A critical part of strong leadership is the degree to which what you profess and what you practice are in alignment. Here’s an exercise to do each week.

• Pick one value you want to practice. Don’t be an over-achiever and try to accomplish more. Start small and then build.
• Ask how can I demonstrate this value? For example, if it’s “respect”, then who are the folks I want to show respect to and how will I do it? It could be as simple as not interrupting Mary when she gets long winded.
• Assess the end of the week what specific things you did to exemplify this particular value? What might have been opportunities you missed? For example, when Joe came in to my office and said…. I could have said this…..
• Pick another value and go through the same process the following week. What you’ll find is awareness plus focus plus motivation leads to change.

3. Reinforce Your Values
Reinforcement involves recognition and possible reward for specific behavior. This can be done through positive feedback when you see an employee treating a customer with integrity; or it could be part of the annual performance appraisal process. And it can be by storytelling – a powerful way to communicate what we value and how we behave around here.

The $125,000 Thank You
All companies go through tough times but it’s the way they handle it that makes a difference. For example, Armstrong International, a number of years ago, had to put a wage freeze into effect to get through what looked like a very difficult year. Right from the start, management was up front with the employees talking about how they plan to handle this challenge.

He then lifted the sheet and everyone saw, to their amazement, a table covered with $10 bills; some 12,500 of them – stacked two feet high. One by one, each employee came up and was told, “Thank you for your understanding and commitment to Armstrong.” Each walked away with forty crisp, new $10 bills

This story has been told over and over again by employees and by the media because it demonstrates very clearly the values of the company – Honesty – Fairness – Respect – Trust – Loyalty.

Smart Moves Tip:

Values are important. They describe how you relate to your staff, customers, investors and suppliers. Numbers tell you how much there is of something, not if it is right. Values tell you whether something is right for you and your organization. And when values have been defined in behavioral terms then you, as a leader, can manage the people and processes more effectively

Middle Living-The Only Way to Live

Creating value, now that is something we as Americans know a thing or two about!

Say what you want about financial markets and creative manipulation of dollars and equity, or the collective elitism of certain areas of our country in regard to technology (see Silicon Valley), we Americans are really good at creating value. Keep this in mind moving forward, especially anyone who is thinking about a career change (can you hear me boomers?) young and old alike we have tremendous upside. And I mean in a really huge, positive way!

Let me tell you how much I love Time magazine, from the science tips to the feature articles, the political takes, health and science to the satire, Time rocks! From Rana Foroohar, “Frenemies: A Trade Story”, Fareed Zakaria, “The Saudis Are Upset? Tough!” to the hilarity of Joel Stein, they all just get it completely done. However my newest favorite, this week anyway, is hands down Times Asian correspondent Michael Schuman and his article, “China Makes Everything. Why Can’t it Create Anything?”

I would like to say “way to go Mike!”

I have been sharing my views on baby boomers and the need to ‘transition’ into their collective 2nd or 3rd or maybe 4th career for almost three years now on my radio talk show “Boomers Rock”. Quality of life boomer style is all about staying integrated and engaged, employed and connected, mentoring and giving back, it is a mindset that lends itself to helping our collective society, young and old, build and rebuild. This is what we as Americans are really good at, teamwork!

boomer_happiness_2

As my new favorite Mike writes about the economy, “the U.S. growing at a sluggish 2.5% and Europe doing even worse, all eyes are on China as the worlds growth engine”, the coffee is brewing and I can hear that knocking of opportunity, boomers listen up. China has its issues, and the global economy is still pretty flat, but this newest of terms, ‘reshoring’ is growing, and it is this plus other positives that make me excited.

“Reshoring is the practice of bringing outsourced personnel and services back to the location from which they were originally offshored.”

I like to think of this period in time as the ‘game on’ phase of economic growth, the opportunity for mentoring and giving back, which leads to improving our knowledge base is a massive occasion in the 21st century. As Mike wrote in the above mentioned Time article, “a recent KPMG (one of the largest professional services companies in the world) report, 37% of the technology executives surveyed believed that the U.S. holds the most promise for producing disruptive technologies over the next four years”.

Americans create and think critically, that is what it takes to drive innovation!

boomer_happiness_1

I like to say through adversity grows opportunity, in the flattened globe bringing home jobs is such an upbeat movement that wasting this chance to set up our society for say the next fifty years appears to be within our reach. The re-tipping point, the point where the pendulum has swung back and forth twice is now upon us, and it is time to get excited and get involved in the solution. Baby Boomers now is not the time to think the dreaded R word (retirement), it is as I say on the talk show “walk into the ReFirement zone”. Time to pick up our game!

Skills that demand education, culture change that demands teamwork, disruptive technologies that demand critical thinking and the cojones to make it happen, now driving the engine of opportunity is clearly here. The Chinese are good at copying, their students are good at test taking, and their population numbers are massive, but the cheap labor days in China are over, and they are afraid of failure, it’s in their DNA not to rock the boat. Frankly if you cannot dream the big vision, see the next great innovation, or invent the next technology then you can never lead.

We are leaders, and we need to step up our game because the entire world needs us to continue to be disruptive and find alternative ways to accomplish the impossible.

Tom Matt is the host of the daily radio talk show “Boomers Rock”, heard on WGHN 1370 AM Saturday mornings at 9:00 in Grand Haven, Michigan. And syndicated on the Internet here at VoiceAmerica, and heard on the Spartan Sports network SSN/247.

This is where he brings experts in to discuss all issues that enhance our quality of life. He welcomes comments and feedback, on his site Boomers Rock , please join our family and change the world!
