Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens.
Knowledge is power. Information is food for the mind. Nourish yourself with education. Show hosts Henna and Asya read the chapter, The Gift of Education by Dr. Don Martin, from Cynthia Brian’s book, Be the Star You Are! for Teens then chat about their own journeys in their pursuit of education.  They then welcome Aussie author of 21 books, Sue Lawson, who discusses the life of a writer and her new book Freedom Ride, based on true events. Asya wraps it up with the importance of educating on ourselves on numerous topics including child sex trafficking. She and Henna advise using education and your gut to keep safe.  When you learn, you grow. An education is a treasure that pays big dividends for a lifetime. Educate yourself today!

Sue Lawson
Bio

Sue Lawson writes books for children and young adults. Her love for books began when she was a child on a farm in country Victoria where she spent her time reading, writing, obsessing about Aussie Rules football, listening to her father and grandfather’s stories and avoiding working with the cattle. These days, she’s added stationery shops to her football obsession and when not writing, works part time for Geelong commercial radio station, BAY FM and runs workshops for young people and adults. In 2012, Pan’s Whisper was short-listed for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, was a Notable Book at the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Awards and won the Australian Family Therapists’ Award for Children’s Literature. You Don’t Even Know was short-listed for the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards in 2014.
Sue’s latest book, Freedom Ride, is based on actual events.

Miracle Moment®

“Let your hopes, not your hurts, shape your future. People who soar, are those who refuse to sit back and wish things would change.”

Charles R. Swindoll

Message from Founder, Cynthia Brian

Of all the forces that make for a better world, none is so powerful as hope. Hope keeps dreams alive. Hope is everything. Recently I received a letter from an incarcerated individual who had read my book, Be the Star You Are!® 99 Gifts for Living, Loving, Laughing, and Learning to Make a Difference.  Because of the true stories of portrayed in the book, he said he was filled with hope for a better tomorrow when he is released.  “But sadly”.  he wrote, “many of the other young people in prison with me are hopeless and helpless as we have no library of encouraging books. I would like to start one. Would you please consider sending copies of Be the Star You Are!® 99 Gifts for Living, Loving, Laughing, and Learning to Make a Difference?”

After I read his heart-felt letter I thought it wise to consult our volunteers to see how Be the Star You Are!® could respond. Our mission is to empower women, families, and youth through improved literacy, increased positive media, and sustainable tools for living. Unanimously the volunteers agreed that we would create a new outreach program to address this lack of empowerment and life skill books in places of incarceration. The program has been aptly named “Possibilities for Prisoners Project”. Our goal is to raise a start-up fund of $10,000 to collect, organize, and ship appropriate resources to decrease despair, increase hope, and encourage positive transformation. Following St. Francis of Assisi guidelines, we will offer light in the darkness and joy from the sadness.
