You Only Live Once – Book Release

YOLO

Just recently I self published a book entitled, “You Only Live Once” about my travels from the time I took a bar tending course when I was twenty years of age till I got married at thirty-seven years of age.

During that time I experienced great times and stressful times. I traveled a lot and did some pretty cool things along the way. Nothing held me back from doing something that sounded adventurous. Some of the time it didn’t turn out so good but when that happened something or someone else came along and I moved on to other exciting opportunities.

In the book I do not just talk about the jobs and travel but I discuss the social obstacles I had while growing up and how being a bartender and working in the hospitality industry really helped me out.

It is an action packed book so if you are one that likes to travel, enjoys adventure, and would like to do something but cannot find the courage to start, this book may be the kick start you need.

I asked myself before trying something new, “what is the worst thing that can happen if this does not work out” and the answer was try something else.

Another thing I would like to mention is this book is for someone who is starting out and looking at the Hospitality Industry as a career option. One of the reasons for my show on the Variety channel is to broaden one’s knowledge of the industry. It certainly shouldn’t stop at being a waiter or bartender. There are many options available.

As a side note I am keeping track of book sales so any purchase of an e-book I donate $1 to Sick Kids Foundation. My oldest son spent a month in there and another two weeks another time when he had to have 6 inches of his intestine taken out due to a ruptured appendix. So I would like to give back. You can keep track of the money raised on my blog waiterextraordinaire on blogspot dot com.

And Don’t Forget to Tune In Every Monday at 9am PST/ 12pm EST to ‘The Hospitality Industry News Network

On August 31st I will be hosting a new show on the Variety Channel called, “The Hospitality Industry News Network” which will feature many exciting guests. The first show is an introduction to myself and what I am all about. Having spent over 35 years in the Hospitality Industry I will provide a unique perspective on all things to do with travel, food and beverage and working in all facets of the industry. In fact I recently self published a book describing my personal experiences from the time I took a bar tending course in 1979 to the time I met my wife from Iceland in 1996. I did it all living all over the place. Join me on August 31st at noon EDT. Should be a fun show!

Middle Living-The Only Way to Live

Creating value, now that is something we as Americans know a thing or two about!

Say what you want about financial markets and creative manipulation of dollars and equity, or the collective elitism of certain areas of our country in regard to technology (see Silicon Valley), we Americans are really good at creating value. Keep this in mind moving forward, especially anyone who is thinking about a career change (can you hear me boomers?) young and old alike we have tremendous upside. And I mean in a really huge, positive way!

Let me tell you how much I love Time magazine, from the science tips to the feature articles, the political takes, health and science to the satire, Time rocks! From Rana Foroohar, “Frenemies: A Trade Story”, Fareed Zakaria, “The Saudis Are Upset? Tough!” to the hilarity of Joel Stein, they all just get it completely done. However my newest favorite, this week anyway, is hands down Times Asian correspondent Michael Schuman and his article, “China Makes Everything. Why Can’t it Create Anything?”

I would like to say “way to go Mike!”

I have been sharing my views on baby boomers and the need to ‘transition’ into their collective 2nd or 3rd or maybe 4th career for almost three years now on my radio talk show “Boomers Rock”. Quality of life boomer style is all about staying integrated and engaged, employed and connected, mentoring and giving back, it is a mindset that lends itself to helping our collective society, young and old, build and rebuild. This is what we as Americans are really good at, teamwork!

As my new favorite Mike writes about the economy, “the U.S. growing at a sluggish 2.5% and Europe doing even worse, all eyes are on China as the worlds growth engine”, the coffee is brewing and I can hear that knocking of opportunity, boomers listen up. China has its issues, and the global economy is still pretty flat, but this newest of terms, ‘reshoring’ is growing, and it is this plus other positives that make me excited.

“Reshoring is the practice of bringing outsourced personnel and services back to the location from which they were originally offshored.”

I like to think of this period in time as the ‘game on’ phase of economic growth, the opportunity for mentoring and giving back, which leads to improving our knowledge base is a massive occasion in the 21st century. As Mike wrote in the above mentioned Time article, “a recent KPMG (one of the largest professional services companies in the world) report, 37% of the technology executives surveyed believed that the U.S. holds the most promise for producing disruptive technologies over the next four years”.

Americans create and think critically, that is what it takes to drive innovation!

I like to say through adversity grows opportunity, in the flattened globe bringing home jobs is such an upbeat movement that wasting this chance to set up our society for say the next fifty years appears to be within our reach. The re-tipping point, the point where the pendulum has swung back and forth twice is now upon us, and it is time to get excited and get involved in the solution. Baby Boomers now is not the time to think the dreaded R word (retirement), it is as I say on the talk show “walk into the ReFirement zone”. Time to pick up our game!

Skills that demand education, culture change that demands teamwork, disruptive technologies that demand critical thinking and the cojones to make it happen, now driving the engine of opportunity is clearly here. The Chinese are good at copying, their students are good at test taking, and their population numbers are massive, but the cheap labor days in China are over, and they are afraid of failure, it’s in their DNA not to rock the boat. Frankly if you cannot dream the big vision, see the next great innovation, or invent the next technology then you can never lead.

We are leaders, and we need to step up our game because the entire world needs us to continue to be disruptive and find alternative ways to accomplish the impossible.

Cleaning Up The Toxic Spills In Your Life By Asya Gonzalez

asya 1st day of school

Isn’t it funny how the people we surround ourselves with can affect how we feel, how we act, how we see ourselves and the world around us?  I believe we are often a product of our environment and it’s inevitable that the people we keep closest to us will influence us to a degree.  So, don’t you agree that it’s crucial to choose the people in our lives very carefully?  I know that we often don’t have a choice about who is in our lives. We usually don’t get to pick our teachers, we don’t have control over who will be in our class and if you work, you might have to work with someone you don’t like.  And sometimes, the most negative, or what I like to call toxic, people in our lives just might be the very people we live with.  It can be difficult to stay positive and lifted up when someone is impacting you so negatively.

Eleanor Roosevelt has a quote that I have really taken to heart.  She once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”  And she’s so right!  You can’t control what someone is going to say to you, but you sure can control how you’re going to receive it. So, let me repeat that again: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”  No one.

I’ve had my share of negative people and, unfortunately, some have been my family.  It used to affect me, but as I have been moving forward, and growing and getting stronger mentally, I’ve learned that if you let this take hold of you it hinders you from branching out and reaching your goals.

When I first started my t-shirt company, my parents and brothers supported me 100%, all the way, and they still do. The majority of my friends were also supportive, but there were some people who I thought were my friends who had negative comments and tried to make themselves feel or look better by saying hurtful things about me.   I had to realize that there are always going to be people like that in life. The key is learning how to deal with it. If someone were to bring you down, it’s usually because they want what they can’t have. Jealousy is a negative energy sucker and is not healthy.  It’s not healthy for the person who feels jealous and it’s not healthy for the people who are affected by it.  The absolute best way to deal with it is to ALWAYS know your self-worth!  Surround yourself with people who find you valuable and worthy so when you feel a bit defeated and forget your own value, they’re there to remind you.  When you know your value, you can achieve much. Keep family and true friend around you to combat toxic people.

It’s not easy dealing with jealous or toxic people.  People who are angry with you because of success or good grades or making better choices, often they are feeling that way because they don’t feel valuable themselves.  A way to help yourself not react to them in an equally negative way is to try and see them as who they are: Real people with real problems and real feelings.  They are worthy of love and affection but they don’t believe it for themselves or have had such a negative, bad experience in their lives that they become hardened and lash out.  A way to reach them just might be to restrain yourself from lashing back and showing them care and concern.  BUT at the same time, you want to be careful that you’re not trying so hard that you hang out with them so much that you lose sight of yourself and your goals.  You don’t want to change into their patterns.  I remember once my mom giving us a lesson on toxic people.  She said that it’s very easy for good kids to fall in with the wrong crowd.  She had us stand up on a chair, one at a time.  When I was up on the chair, she said, “Try and pull me up” I grabbed her hand and yanked up with all of my might and nothing happened,” She said, “Now, try and stay on your chair” and then she tugged on my arm and I was pulled off the chair.  She said, “See how hard it was to pull me up but how easy it was for me to pull you down?  That’s how it is in life.  Choose your friends wisely.  It’s very difficult to pull a toxic person up out of their toxic lifestyle, but it is VERY easy for a toxic person to suck you in through gossip, bad choices, peer pressure and pull you down to their level.  Choose wisely.”  I will never forget that analogy.

So yes, there will always be people in your walk of life who will be toxic and try and bring you down, but you have a choice to surround yourself with positive, goal oriented people who want to see you lifted up.  You make the choice to positively impact those around you as well.  Remember the quote I mentioned earlier about no one being able to make you feel inferior (or lousy) without your consent?  I have another great quote from the same great former first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt:  “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”  Choose the mind that YOU want to have and then choose the people you want to positively impact your life.
