The tale of two cities, San Francisco and Santa Clara celebrated the 50th Super Bowl by pulling out all the stops at Levi’s Stadium, the new home of the 49ers. Whether you rooted for the Panthers or the Broncos, it was game for the record books.

We live on a speed track. Whether we are cooking, running errands, or working, we move so quickly that we sacrifice effectiveness, enjoyment, and efficiency. In Health Matters, Heather Brittany and Cynthia Brian resolve to help us all take it easier, be healthier, and happier.

Arguments about food are prevalent, especially with the sell-by dates. Are you wasting food by tossing items when they are still safe to eat? In the U.S. 30-40% of all food is wasted, about $161 billion worth according to Agriculture Department estimates.  We’ll look at what to eat and what to toss.

Do you buy an extended warranty when you buy a product? Warranties are insurance for products but are they worth the extra cost? Cynthia Brian will look at the luxury of warranties.

The Gift of Laughter

Every week, Express Yourself!™ will bring you a stimulating program based on a chapter from our award winning book Be the Star You Are!® for Teens.

Opportunities for laughter are everywhere, in everything, everyday. Laughing is a healing drug with no side effects. And it’s free!

zahra head shotBrigitte Jia - Version 2 (1)

Hosts Zahra Hasanian and Brigitte Jia bring laughter to the show with a reading from the chapter The Gift of Laughter by Jill Byington from the book, Be the Star You Are!® for Teens. Zahra conveys her Hope Heals segment with a conversation on how genuine laughter can help hopelessness. Numerous medical studies indicate that the deep breaths we take and the chemicals our body releases when we laugh hasten healing and reinforce the body’s immunity. In Art Attack, Brigitte shows how Manga artists use a variety of different techniques to make people laugh through their drawings.
asya 1st day of school
Asya Gonzalez joins the discussion with her view that spreading laughter is the same thing as spreading kindness, you are giving someone an experience that gives them joy.

Make time to laugh every day. Humor is food for the soul.
You don’t stop laughing because you grow old.
You grow old because you stop laughing.

Henna provides an update on her Harvard experiences and the new radio network she’ll be working with at the university as the ladies chat.  The hosts also discuss their personal viewpoints of what tolerance and intolerance mean to them.  Prolific author of YA novels, Paullina Simons brings her fascinating insights about tolerance and how she writes her characters. Paullina grew up in Russia where she never saw a person of another race or color. When she came to America, she went to a school that was 80% Latin and African American. She advocates defining what tolerance is to you and surround yourself with people who feel positive and have beliefs that are similar. Be open-minded.  Be respectful. Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity presents: Express Yourself Teens With the on-air Be the Star You Are!® youth reporters.

Taylor Swift, John Green, You Tube, Table 58. What do they have in common? Bold fashion styles. Beauty must-haves. The latest songs. The best new gadgets. Let’s face it: trying to stay informed about all the ever-evolving teen trends can be exhausting! Worry not, though – Express Yourself!™ is here to help keep you “in the know”! Under-recognized for their influence in the teen trend world, books are a huge part of young people’s lives, and they have the potential to catch on like wildfire, particularly when they become movies! Think Harry Potter, Twilight, the Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars. Whether we’re driving down the highways blaring the latest tunes from inside our cars, or whether we’re sitting in our rooms rocking out to beats from our iPods, music constitutes one of teens’ most valued art forms. It’s hard to imagine what our lives would be like without the solace of music and the influence of our favorite singers. Book It! Reporter, Courtney Cheng chats with our hosts, Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez about the importance and relevance of books and music for teens. DStar of Bubble Guppies on Nick Jr, twelve year old Grace Kaufman talks about her new Amazon series, “Table 58” about a geeky group of unpopular kids who occupy the odd table in the lunchroom, made up of kids from all different cliques. Whatever trends are in or out, the Express Yourself!™ stars will keep you informed.

Guest: Grace Kaufman
Grace Kaufman is close to turning 12, she is not only an actress but also a singer and dancer. She has a wide range of talents and expresses them on the projects she works on, definitely earning her a spot to be the next big star in Hollywood. She had a great year with her work in 2014 as she starred in television shows and movies, her amazing performances left the fans wanting more. But not to worry! She’s got more in store for 2015 as she gets ready for her premier of the Amazon pilot “Table 58”. Grace’s peers can also hear her belt out tunes as the fun, bright, crazy and opinionated ‘Deema’ on the hit animated Nick Jr. series “Bubble Guppies.” The anticipated TNT series “The Last Ship” is set to air for the second season Summer 2015 on the network where Grace will portray Eric Dane’s daughter in the futurist action adventure series produced by Michael Bay. Fans of independent films will be captivated by Grace’s emotional performance in the film “Sister,” as the lead role of ‘Niki,’ a young girl whose adoptive parents are killed. Grace is one busy little girl.

Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity presents: Express Yourself Teens With the on-air Be the Star You Are!® youth reporters.

Bullying, mocking, deriding, disparaging, taunting, ridiculing, name calling describe exactly the type of social and emotional pain that many kids endure every day. The time is now to nip this negativity in the bud. Our empowered hosts, Henna Hundal and Asya Gonzalez interview Matt Cubbler, owner of MaxOut Strength Studio that works to create leaders by building the inner strength of its teen clients as well developing their physical strength. The hosts also interview creative writing teacher from Minnesota State, Geoff Herbach,  award winning author of the Young Adult novels, Stupid Fast, Nothing Special, I’m With Stupid, and Fat Boy vs. The Cheerleaders, all listed in the year’s best by the American Library Association, The American Booksellers Association, and many state library associations. The Gift of Giving reporter, Katelyn Darrow, talks about why it’s important to choose benevolence amid bullies and always live by the Golden Rule. Our program winds up with a stellar rendition of Taylor Swift’s song “Mean” sung by our own Be the Star You Are!® chanteuse and Back Story Reporter, Jennifer Lee. Today’s program encourages us all to choose kindness and never be a name caller. It doesn’t pay to be MEAN.

“I bet you got pushed around

Somebody made you cold

But the cycle ends right now

‘Cause you can’t lead me down that road

And you don’t know, what you don’t know…

Someday I’ll be living in a big ol’ city

And all you’re ever gonna be is mean

Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me

And all you’re ever gonna be is mean

Why you gotta be so mean?”
