Are you a young person who wants to learn to be a writer or author? Writing With the Stars is a FREE online creative writing workshop for kids ages 9-14 hosted by Express Yourself! Teen Radio Host Ruhani Chhabra. 

Writing With the Stars will feature a fun and engaging curriculum that encourages young writers to pursue their imaginative ideas and expertly convey them on paper:

Classes will be held biweekly on Saturdays. All classes are FREE of charge!

Each week will have a different lesson, either centering on poetry, fiction, creative

nonfiction, personal narratives, etc.

She hopes to expand her numerous talents by studying in New York City when she’s older. Here at Be the Star You Are!®, the love is flowing. We are thrilled and proud of the accomplishments of our volunteers. One of our teen radio hosts, Ruhani Chhabra recently was one of eight winners out of 11,000 international submissions in the New York Times Personal Essay contest. We are also welcoming new teen reporters to Express Yourself! Radio, giving youth a voice. Two of them are profiled below. And under the auspices of Be the Star You Are!®, award-winning writer, Ruhani Chhabra is launching a FREE writing workshop for kids ages 9-14. Make sure to check out the info and sign up immediately as classes start the first Saturday in March.

We are also gearing up for Earth Day with three videos submitted to the Earth Gratitude international Festival to be held the weekend of April 22. Stay tuned for more info.

This month of February, Be the Star You Are!® launches the segments of two new radio reporters, Hannah Sahota and Kirpa Gill. We welcome these outstanding teens to our STAR Galaxy.

Hannah Sahota: Empowerment and Equality

Hannah Sahoto headshot 4Hannah Sahota is a junior at Turlock High School who is active both in and out of the classroom. As the first ladder player on the THS Varsity Tennis Team, she takes that competitive nature to campus, being a leader within the Science Olympiad and Math Clubs representing Turlock in statewide competitions. In her free time, Hannah has enjoyed playing the piano for the last nine years.

She is extremely passionate about promoting gender equality and youth empowerment through education and literature. To accomplish this, Hannah has tutored a diverse group of students for the last five years through Sundar S.T.E.A.M Academy. Through her experiences tutoring, Hannah has begun “Hannah’s Project”, a charitable organization dedicated to providing young girls with a platform to pursue an interest in STEM subjects.

After listening to the broadcasts and shows on Express Yourself! Teen Radio, Hannah was fascinated with the informative and engaging content written and produced by teens like herself. Through her platform, she hopes to educate her peers with a diverse and relevant array of discussion topics. Her segment is called Empowerment and Equality. Kirpa Gill: Pet Prescription

Kirpa Gill, a sixth grader at Julien Elementary School in the GATE program, loves to spend her free time with her German Shepherd, Simba.  Kirpa is very compassionate about animals and her future career goal is to become a veterinarian, and provide free services to rescue animals.   Her love for music is expressed through the piano, which she has been playing for the last 3 years.  Kirpa has been a member of the Girl Scouts and was promoted to a Cadette last year.   She has presented great leadership and academic skills and was rewarded Rotary  Student of the Month for her school.  She is also a two-time gold-medal winner for the county spelling bee.  After observing her brother host for “Express Yourself Teen Radio” Kirpa is ecstatic about becoming a reporter on “Express “and being able to reach out and make a difference.  Her segment is called Pet Prescription and you can tune in to her first segment will air on February 20th @ 3pm Pt. https://www.voiceamerica.com/show/2014/express-yourself

In the meantime, the team are busy interviewing, reporting, and gathering life skills. This week hosts Asya Gonzalez and Katie Choo interview seventeen year old award winning actress and screenwriter, Mandalynn Carlson about her meteoric career, her screenplays, and what she’s learned working in show business. Katie Lyons joins the conversation to share her love of writing indicating that she’s been crafting stories since before she could write. The young ladies greatly admire writer JK Rowlings who rose from homelessness to being the most famous writer in the world. The message is to believe in your dreams, work hard, never give up, and write on!


Bio for Mandalynn Carlson
Mandalynn Carlson is an award-winning American teen actress, whose first professional film appearance was a supporting role in the 2011 action biopic “Machine Gun Preacher” with Gerard Butler. Leaving Michigan for Hollywood, Carlson has found success staring in dozens of independent films and television shows, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “CSI:NY”. Mandalynn is outspoken against bullying, having dealt with it during elementary and middle school. She started college at 15 years of age and maintains a 4.0 GPA in the film studies curriculum. A fantastic story-teller, Carlson is creating screenplays she hopes to produce and direct that deal with women and girls self-image and self-worth under her production company Smash The Glass Pictures. While she prefers to be in front of the camera, she maintains that she must always be creative and will pursue directing, to fill in gaps. Achieving Your Goals and Being in the Moment
An Excerpt from Practical Enlightenment

We’re not implying that you shouldn’t have goals. What we are saying is that there is a different way to go about fulfilling your heartfelt desires, where there is well-being every step of the way and where you recognize that the result is not more important than this moment.  Here is an example:

Our friend Menna sold her first novel, Men, Money and Chocolate, to a publisher that liked it so much that they also paid her an advance for a sequel, which she had yet to write. Thrilled, Menna wrote her second novel and submitted it to them. They rejected it. Feeling stressed but determined, she wrote another version of a sequel and the publisher didn’t like it either.

Discouraged, she closed herself off from her husband and her world while she got down to business. After much stress and struggle she completed yet an entirely different novel, which she submitted. They rejected that attempt also.

By now Menna was tired, irritable, and feeling like perhaps her first book was an accident.  Maybe it was just a fluke that I wrote something good in the first place, she thought. Sitting at her desk, she would gaze longingly at the garden out back, wishing to be out in nature; but thinking that this was off-purpose, she would wrestle her attention back to her project.

Menna eventually wrote an outline for yet another novel, which she submitted to her publisher. As a result, they called her in for a meeting and told her she needed to go in another direction.  How she was going to go about it, they didn’t know. But if something didn’t happen soon, she would be obligated to give back her advance.

Tired, frustrated, confused, upset and feeling pressured to get it done in truth it was time to take a break. Fortunately for her, Menna was registered to attend one of our transformational immersion courses in Costa Rica along with her husband Artur. Once there, she let everything go. She forgot about home, forgot about being a writer, let go of trying to get somewhere and trying to get her book done. She simply invested herself in being where she was while being there for the experience. She rode horses, zipped through the tree tops on a canopy tour, ate delicious food, enjoyed friends and made new ones. She also sat in the course room and truly listened.

Menna marveled at the birds, how the rain could fall hard enough to practically drown out speech, only to have the sky clear a short time later, and she watched the ground steam as the sun reemerged. She discovered her husband once again. She enjoyed Artur – really enjoyed him. She fully engaged. She slowed down. She fell into the moment and as a byproduct effortlessly bypassed her intelligence and accessed her genius.

It was when Menna returned home to Cambridge, England, that she actually remembered she had a project that was due. She had literally forgotten all about it. Oh yes, she said to herself, I have a book to write. Three weeks later it was complete. Happier Than She’s Ever Been was a great success. Each book she has written since has been easier and more successful than the one that came before.

When you push yourself to get somewhere, common wisdom says that you will accomplish great things. But what if stressing yourself to get to where you think you need to be is not a necessary component to being successful? There is only one of you on a planet of billions of people. You already are a success.

Independent book editor and publishing expert Janet Spencer King  joined me on “Turn the Page” to discuss how to become a published author.”

In this post, Janet offers additional advice to help make your book a success!

WILL MY BOOK BE A SUCCESS?
Janet shares, “Just about every client I have ever had asks me the Big Question: “Will my book be a success?” No one can answer this question upfront; there simply isn’t a way to determine if a book—however good it is—will do well. However, there are several factors to keep in mind when you decide to write and publish your book.

Fiction writers need to keep writing! Most first-time fiction authors can’t expect to sell many books. But we fiction readers are a greedy bunch—when we find an author whose work we like, we want more. Authors who hang in there, writing another and yet another novel, have a much better chance of being discovered. It may not be until the third or even fourth book, but once success starts creeping in, readers are apt to go back to purchase your previous titles. The beauty of being a self-published writer is that your books live on in perpetuity unlike traditionally published ones, most of which are pulled off the market well within the first year.

Many non-fiction writers have the advantage of an existing platform that will help sell their book. Given that non-fiction is often based on a successful business, or expertise in particular areas, these authors may already be doing presentations, holding workshops, and in other ways meeting people who are in their reader niche.

Read books in your genre that are currently popular—you’ll find out how to handle many areas in your own book by learning what other authors did. Go to writers’ conferences as often as possible. You will learn lots more about writing and meet editors and agents. Google lists conferences around the country according to region and genre.”

CRAFTING YOUR WEBSITE URL
“All writers, whether fiction or non-fiction must have a web site! I advise using a URL with your name plus the word “author.” For example, www.spencerkingauthorservices.com . The reason is that your site now welcomes your next book and your next. Using one book’s title locks you into one book only. Non-fiction authors might want to link their expertise to their name in the URL.”

PRICING E-BOOKS
“Many traditional publishing houses are setting e-book prices nearly as high as print books, but self-published authors are free to set their own. I advise no higher than $9.99 and as low as $6.99 for smaller books. Amazon pays 70% royalties on sales of e-books priced between $2.99 and $9.99, and 35% on books that are priced higher than $9.99. The price on your e-book must be at least 20% lower than the print book in order for you to get the 70% rate.”

WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO OWN YOUR BOOK’S ISBN
“You must own your book’s ISBN! It tracks all information including the publisher (you!), sales and revenue. The ISBN cannot be transferred; once purchased by someone, it remains with that entity and you’ll want it to be you. In the US, purchase of ISBNs are through Bowker.com, one number or a packet of ten. I suggest purchasing a packet since you can use it for e-books and other future books.”

It is also the season of Thanksgiving as Hosts Henna Hundal and Caiseen Kelly talk with Social Responsibility Reporter, Asya Gonzalez about gratitude. The first Express Yourself!™ teen host and show administrator, Steven Zhou, returns to reminisce about the impact being part of this positive radio program has had on his college life, and our hosts interview the star of Amazon’s new series, “Gortimer Gibbon’s life on Normal Street”, Sloane Morgan Siegel. He is best known for his recurring role in CBS’ “Partners” and his appearance on Nickelodeon’s “Wendell and Vinnie.”His film credits include “Hate Crime” and the short “Between the Forest and the Field.”
