In life, we all have to deal with some kind of loss or disappointment: the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, loss of a dream, or even the loss of a relationship. It’s tempting to feel like something was taken away from us or something was stolen. You can have one of two attitudes. You can say, “It’s not fair. I don’t understand how this could happen to me?” You can get angry, bitter and pass blame. But what if you take that loss and sow it as a seed? By doing this I mean what if you approach loss with faith, hope, strength, and forgiveness? We believe whatever we tell ourselves. There is no reality – only perception. We trust ourselves…why would we lie inside our own heads? When we find the blessing or lesson to be learned, we can also find the strength we never knew we had and triumph.

The problem with life is there are so many outside forces that can impact the way we see the world and ourselves. Over time, this programming can force us to live our lives according to a false set of beliefs that we’ve held so long we take them as gospel truth. And when we allow past hurts, prejudices, and distorted preconceptions to take root and rule our lives, these negative assumptions can create a self-fulfilling prophecy because we’ll create the results we think we deserve.

The message here is to take a step back and try to look at situations more objectively. How can you do this? One thing you can do is take a break from the nightly news. Think about it, how much negative energy is generated from simply watching the news? The news is one of the biggest influencers of our distorted reality. Over 80% of the stories on the news are depressing, yet most of us choose to fall asleep at night watching these stories. The current state of your mind and your life can improve simply by making small tweaks in your daily habits such as turning off the news before bed and choosing to do something that will generate positive feelings and emotions. Over time, practicing new, positive habits will become second nature to you and will allow for better opportunities and growth. This change will allow you to start looking for the silver lining in life. It will allow you to step back and become more grounded in your thinking. Challenge yourself to stay on high alert for your own filters, unfounded assumptions, and distorted perceptions. Hold yourself accountable to continually test whether your beliefs are grounded in facts and cast away those perceptions that prevent you from realizing your potential in life. You reap what you sow in life; we can sow the seeds of a brighter future by opening our eyes to all the possibilities the world can offer.
